The Midnight is the gift that keeps on giving this summer. Social media has been flooded the past two weeks with positive responses to the duo’s single “Lost Boy”, which we covered here. Tim McEwen and Tyler Lyle aren’t content to rest on their laurels, as their newest single, “America 2”, drops today.
“America 2” has the same incredible sense of melody, hint of melancholy, and sleek production values that have come to define the Midnight’s releases to date. When the vocal line references pawning a guitar to drive through the night to “look for America”, there’s a sense of chasing something abstract at best and illusory at worst. It’s a strong emotional force in the song and one which grabs listeners even if they aren’t paying attention to the lyrics. In a lot of ways, “America 2” complements “Lost Boy”, as they feel like tracks that lead into one another thematically.
At this rate, it’s hard to imagine the next major release from the Midnight not claiming a spot on NewRetroWave’s end-of-year lists. The dreamy synths, exciting guitars that drive the song, and catchy vocal hooks make this one of the perfect tracks to get your friends into synthwave.
