As reported prior by CBR.com it looks like the long in pre-production Maniac Cop remake is coming to television. Previously pitched as a film with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn and Comic Book superstar Ed Brubaker and was rumored to go into production this year was passed by Studio execs and opted as a television series which was picked up HBO.
HBO already has a history of ground breaking series like The Sopranos, The Wire and the recently premiered Watchmen, a sequel to the best selling comic book written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons.
Maniac Cop will be a remake of the William Lustig slasher horror film about a rogue cop that was framed and thought to have been murdered while in prison, that goes a a rampage through NEW YORK CITY. Two sequels spawned from this movie evolving more towards supernatural horror like the Friday the 13th series. The series will be under the direction of NWR and John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Legacies). Both men will produce and direct. I haven’t found anything about Brubaker still on board as a writer but, if he isn’t that would be a big loss for the project in my eyes. Ed Brubaker is well-known for his work at Marvel with his Captain America run, at DC COMICS with his writing credits on BATMAN, GOTHAM CENTRAL and at IMAGE COMICS with his creator owned series like CRIMINAL, FATALE, THE FADE OUT and more.
