It was announced the other week that Taika Waititi’s AKIRA adaptation was halting pre-production in favor of a Marvel MCU Thor sequel. Now some people may be lamenting the news but, I say it is a good thing. After all a Hollywood live action AKIRA film has been in limbo since the 90’s. And every time there’s an update it’s always something wrong. Akira is a big story to tell and should be handled with a great attention to detail and imagination. Something that many executives are incapable of doing.

However, there is a new anime being developed by Sunrise studios that will incorporate the entire run of the AKIRA manga that ran from 1982 up to 1990. “The new AKIRA anime will not be a sequel and more a retelling”, as said by Sunrise. Why is this a big deal? Well because, the anime that was released in 1988 only covered barely the first volume of the series.

The 89′ AKIRA film will be released on 4k soon

If all of that isn’t enough to get you excited Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo is directing an upcoming anime feature titled, ‘Orbital Era’. It’s his third feature film following AKIRA and 2004’s Steamboy.
Here is the teaser trailer
