Looks like after a historically unnecessary edit of the original film by the film studio that shall not be named and almost 20 years of waiting before a directors cut would see the light of day as well a comic book run with BOOM STUDIOs, it seems like Clive Barkers Nightbreed will return to film in the form of a television series by ScyFy, Morgan Creek Entertainment and Universal Cable.

Originally written in literary form as a series of short stories from the Books of Blood as well the novella Cabal. The story of Nightbreed should follow a man named Boone who is on the run for a series of grisly murders. Driven by nightmarish visions, Boone goes in search of a city called Midian. He’s hoping for some answers and the only place he can find some sort of peace.

The movie was released in theaters as Nightbreed in 1990 directed by Barker himself. Barker already having major success as a director with his debut live action adaptation of his novella the Hellbound Heart which was adapted for the screen as Hellraiser.

After disagreements with the studio over the tone and direction of the film, the studio made major cuts to the final film before release. The film was a bomb. The original cut would then be lost in limbo for almost two decades.

With the recent announcement of a television series based on Cabal, Barker has expressed some enthusiasm over the project and is in some way, shape or form involved with production.

Clive : “This story has been near to my heart for many years. I’m beyond thrilled that SyFy and UCP are taking this journey with us, and I cannot wait to see it brought to life on the screen.”

David Robinson (President, Morgan Creek) : “There has never been a more relevant time for us to turn to one of the genre’s great cult classics from our movie library to impact the national conversation with bold, compelling and unconventional storytelling. The team at Morgan Creek is very excited to partner with Clive Barker, Syfy and Universal Cable Productions on Nightbreed for a unique, trenchant and no-holds-barred exploration of race relations in today’s society. As a sophisticated twist on the classic graphic novel form, Nightbreed pits ‘Humans’ against persecuted monsters, using metaphor and parable to take on bias and prejudice with real-world consequences.”

I hope this blows whatever abomination the hellraiser reboot ends up becoming out of the water. With SyFy network improving in their production value lately since Battlestar Galactica and the recent Krypton series (which is good) I’m very interested about a Nightbreed series seeing the light of day. I hope my anticipation isn’t in vain. I want blood, character development, drama and practical creature effects. IF not I will find them and I will eat them.
