At 1980 has just released their stunning debut album, “A Thousand Lives!” Comprised of the Spanish Adrian Quesada Michelena and singer Josh Dally, At 1980 is a new artist to NewRetroWave, but hardly a new artist to synthwave in general.

In fact, Josh Dally was featured on Timecop1983’s album “Night Drive,” tracks by FM-84 and has taken the stage next to Ollie Wride and Dana Jean Pheonix! As you might expect from one rubbing shoulders with those high caliber musicians, At 1980’s debut “A Thousand Lives” is a top-notch synthpop album perfect for fans of the The Midnight, Michael Oakley, and Ollie Wride.

Filled with catchy vocals, perfectly produced synthesizers, plenty of gated reverb, and a soft saxophone glaze, At 1980 is quickly joining the pantheon of New Retro Synthpop. Exploding with nostalgia and a transcendental atmosphere, “A Thousand Lives” is simply not an album you want to miss!

The Brighton based singer songwriter Ollie Wride is out now with his much anticipated debut solo album, “Thanks in Advance” – and I’m pleased to report this record lives up to it’s hype!

Previously known as the vocal half of synthpop-dreamwave sensation FM-84, Wride has embarked his solo career with Michael Oakley co-producing a powerhouse of an album. The three singles released ahead of “Thanks in Advance,” “The Driver (feat. The Night Hour),” “Never Live Without You,” and “Overcome” really set the tone and pace of the album to come, establishing the crisp fantastic vocals and pure 1980s dreamy synth elation Ollie Wride has to offer.

But Wride hasn’t set out to replicate the FM-84 sound. Although still poppy, “Thanks in Advance” is incredibly distinct from his previous FM-84 work, immediately setting himself apart tonally. As Vehlinggo stated, “…there’s no confusing a Phil Collins solo effort with Genesis and vice-versa.”

Each of the tracks from “Thanks in Advance” invoke retro influences while crafting some truly delicious contemporary synth-pop. This album belts out catchy hit after catchy hit, ranging from pop power ballads to synth-stomping anthems sure to please fans of Michael Oakley, The Midnight, and Gunship!

FM-84’s music, according to one review “transcends nostalgia into a modern masterpiece.” This series of shows is sure to be some of the best we’ll see all summer in the retrowave genre – I’ve got my ticket’s already – do you?

The UK based Ollie Wride is back on the dance floor with his new bodacious single, “Never Live Without You!”

Ollie Wride, also known as the lead vocalist for the amazing FM-84, lays out some serious pipes on this awesome upbeat new wave synth pop crooner. Of course he works with some of best – and as such this gleaming retro single is perfectly mixed and mastered. This track is reminiscent of artists like The Midnight, Gunship, and Michael Oakley – if you’re a fan of them then you won’t want to miss this!

Last month, Ollie Wride also dropped another single, “Overcome,” leaving some asking themselves if an EP or full-length may be on the way. Grab a listen to “Never Live Without You” below!

Ollie Wride has been working on his solo record for much of 2018, and if this song is a sample of what’s to come, it should be on your radar. Wride cites David Bowie, Lindsey Buckingham, Peter Gabriel, and Roxy Music as major influences for his 80’s-infused pop bangers. While fans of the singer’s work with FM-84 will no doubt find a familiar root to his work, the Bowie and Gabriel influences are particularly strong throughout “Overcome”. As far as collaborators are concerned, we are told that you can expect Michael Oakley and Col, as well as other familiar artists, to make an appearance once the album drops.

It’s hard to not put this track on repeat while anxiously awaiting any other singles in anticipation of what is shaping up to be an incredible release.

NewRetroWave is proud to be streaming Ollie Wride’s “Overcome” here.

On Saturday, November 18, 2017, two unsigned artists performed to a completely sold out crowd at the Globe Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Synthwave fans from all over the world stood in a line that wrapped around the entire block to witness only the second ever in concert performance of The Midnight and FM-84.

Doors opened shortly after 9 PM where the stage was already set for the Globe to become the center of nostalgia for the night. Opening with a bang, FM-84 had clearly put careful thought into the tracklist for the night. Each track changed the mood, tossing the audience left and right with a synth assault that the LA synthwave scene will always remember. This set was of course accompanied by a fiery performance from Ollie Wride who almost single-handedly cultivated the entire crowd and the extremely talented Chris Huggett on guitar. Finishing with “Running in the Night”, the FM-84 set was truly an unforgettable experience.

There really is a magical chemistry between these two groups that makes them the perfect match up for a single concert. The Midnight proceeded to nail all of the tracks that we wanted to hear. The crowd was utterly in awe of Jesse Molloy and his mastery of the saxophone during “Vampires” and “Crystalline”. The performance, of course, wouldn’t have been complete without the appearance of Nikki Flores, sounding great on tracks from Nocturnal.<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape

All in all, a better show couldn’t have been put on by anyone else. If nothing else, this particular concert showed that independent music can be a force to be reckoned with and we simply can’t wait for where these two will perform next. We’ll be there.

A truly iconic track that simultaneously salutes and transcends the genre.

Answer-phone.
Pause. Beep.
Pause.
“… (Static) Don’t you recognise one of my silences by now?”
Click, brrr…
This song is Romance, good, bad, all the layers that exist in between. Heartache, heartbreak, desire, redemption.
The nightrider riffs and neo-retro pop sensibilities are primed to make it an iconic 80s-inspired Electronica-Retro-Waved-Power-Ballad.
A dreamy synth excursion with emotive restrained arpeggios opens the track, with tape-sampled snares, dusty kicks and deviously reverbed hits.
The instrumentation is sparse leaving space for the dramatic vocal to lean into. You think you are hearing more than you are, the crisp production invites you in to investigate the empty space so that every detail is fawned over.
Ollie Wride might just have given one of the strongest most memorable vocals you are likely to here this side of 84, a ghostly howl that seeps into you in a reverbed wash, the piercing strength of his tone managing to grip you throughout. He has the youthful exuberance of a child expressing something for the first time whilst belting out stadium styled vocals with power and precision.
There are parts that fuse into the background entirely, a poem in rhyme and verse. The silence offers licence to invent and fantasize; It reminds you of lost love, of love worth fighting for. A stranger whose presence in your life has made you their stranger.

A truly iconic track that simultaneously salutes and transcends the genre.
