The EP sets off with a violent, crashing groove set against pulsating sirens, immediately pulling you into the producers’ cavernous, claustrophobic world on ‘See Me now’ and ‘Trust’. Chaos and violence recede and the ambience swells into a thick, slightly suffocating fog on ‘All or Nothing’, your racing heartrate hitting every backbeat as you catch your breath in time for the punished reprise that is  ‘Control’. Finally, the record closes on an epic downtempo track that will leave you scarred with images of utter desolation and ruin.

See Me Now is not a record for the faint-hearted and leaves little room for cute, twinkly synth sounds. Clocking just under the 20-minute mark, the EP will keep your senses locked in. For those fueled by the occasional lycanthropic urge to feel boiling blood shooting through their veins, Sierra’s See Me Now is the be-all and end-all fix you need.

From the Chiptune introduction on ‘Arcade Daze’ all the way down to the epic credit roll theme that is ‘Take my Hand’, the record delivers some powerful, catchy tracks whilst an immersive ambience for the album’s narrative to unfold.

With its electric neon grids and Cyberpunk soundscapes, Fall Into You makes its case as a truly heartfelt homage to the sense of wonder that permeated arcade culture.

The previous Staring at Screens album grabbed our hand and pulled us down into a glitched-out, frenetic, and glossy world of sex hotline samples with “Fantasy Hotline,” but this Staring At Screens release feels more cohesive and thought-out. The tracks on this album feel like much more than a concept – in fact, this is one of the best releases I’ve heard from Trevor in some time!

Instead of diving more into glitch as I expected, here Staring At Screens has taken a brilliant right turn into House and Techno territory with quite a few tracks on “Room,” and it’s an absolutely fantastic. Melding elements of synthwave, futurefunk, and dance music has created an amazing new monster all it’s own – really fantastic stuff.

Known for his unusual and intense blend of darksynth, techno, and industrial, “Discordian Disco” deviates a bit from Filmmaker’s usual sound. In what may be his last full-length release of 2020, “Discordian Disco” is light on the disco and heavy on the discord. Although this might not seem retro at first, there are some gated-reverb drums and warm yet-minor key tonalities that anyone familiar with David Lynch’s work will feel instantly be nostalgic for.

Drawing inspiration from Greek goddess of chaos, Eris, and elements of the Discordian religion, Filmmaker has crafted a uniquely interesting album that explores elements of dissonance and disharmony – creating an incredibly interesting listening experience. Wrapped in a cloak of IDM-styled beats, “Discordian Disco” is the perfect tribute album to the fickle goddess of discord!

On top of that, STRNGR announced: “Any and all proceeds go toward either the NAACP legal defense and education fund and campaign zero to end police brutality.”

I sadly had missed the boat on many of STRNGR’s other releases – recognizing the multi-talented producer more for his astounding physical art and remixes than his original production. That was a mistake and a gross oversight on my part.

“Bumping Uglies” is a truly fantastic showing, joining darksynth, industrial and techno to astounding effect. Similar in some ways to Gesaffelstein, Street Fever, Schwefelgelb, or Filmmaker – STRNGR still never feels derivative and retains a disgustingly satisfying originality.

In the Bandcamp description it reads, “There was supposed to be more.” I sure hope more is coming, because I can’t wait to hear it.

This album notably deviates from Nightcrawler’s more traditional synthwave and darksynth sound, being filled to the brim with exquisite elements of industrial and synthpop, as well as bits of EBM, techno and some experimental vibes as well. “Visionary” feels at times highly reminiscent of Gesaffelstien and Street Fever, though all the while being innovative and not derivative in the least – living up to it’s name.

This album truly broadens the horizons of what darksynth as a genre can hope to be as it evolves. Nightcrawler said in a statement:  “I wanted to use the synthwave as a brush inside my creative palette, not that the synthwave is the whole canvas – and merge it with other styles that I think can coexist,” and here he was wildly successful.

Replete with deep, monstrous bass lines, “Visionary” creates an oppressive atmosphere punctuated by haunting melodies that meld perfectly together to create a truly horrific and at the same time satisfying listening experience.

For instance, “Nemesis” juxtaposes an unearthly raw piano against perhaps the most nasty bass line I have heard in some time, and “Catharsis (Feat. Mental Exile)” transforms an almost ambient darksynth intro into a wonderful vocal filled gothic synthpop track. Instead of sounding jarring, this transformations feel natural, and create an entirely new sound for Nightcrawler that eclipses his other albums in terms of technical production.

Nightcrawler has also brought in some top-tier talent for features on this album, highlighting the work of Maxthor, the “mysterious and enigmatic” French singer Celine, Sojna of the synthpop band Oblique, and Mental Exile from Germany.

The result is an interesting and innovative album filled with many influences that meld together into one cohesive sound, creating one of Nightcrawlers best releases to date!

The Parisian producer Sierra is new to the scene – but with an amazing release like “Strange Valley,” she’s certain to carve out a name for herself quickly. After scouring the internet, we can find no mention of the mysterious Sierra’s real name.  I tried to track her down to ask her some questions myself, but the closest I got was word she was currently traveling in the Sahara desert!

Her music came on the scene a little over a year ago, beginning with a remix of “Toxic is Dead.” Soon after she earned a spot in a “So French Records” compilation – no easy feat. Her Facebook page was created as recently as April of this year.

Then, in November, she released the Strange Valley EP. From this sound we can tell she’s been hard at work – her remix and compilation track were good, but this EP is fantastic.

The six tracks on “Strange Valley” are a mix of french touch, electro and synthwave. It sounds like Gesaffelstein or Street Fever if instead of making dance music they were making sick retrosynth soundtracks. Each cut from the “Strange Valley EP is also very well produced with an expert mix and master.

Although we’re not certain where she came from, if she keeps making music like this she’s sure to climb to the top. This introductory EP is definitely worth a listen (Or like, 4 in my case)
