STRNGR’s latest amazing demo “Bumping Uglies” caught me by surprise. The tracks are filled with a raw darkness and energy I haven’t heard in what feels like forever.

On top of that, STRNGR announced: “Any and all proceeds go toward either the NAACP legal defense and education fund and campaign zero to end police brutality.”

I sadly had missed the boat on many of STRNGR’s other releases – recognizing the multi-talented producer more for his astounding physical art and remixes than his original production. That was a mistake and a gross oversight on my part.

“Bumping Uglies” is a truly fantastic showing, joining darksynth, industrial and techno to astounding effect. Similar in some ways to Gesaffelstein, Street Fever, Schwefelgelb, or Filmmaker – STRNGR still never feels derivative and retains a disgustingly satisfying originality.

In the Bandcamp description it reads, “There was supposed to be more.” I sure hope more is coming, because I can’t wait to hear it.

Waves of Hope – A Synth PPE Fundraiser

“Waves of Hope” is a remarkable new compilation album from 24 different indie synth artists.

This pay-what-you-want release is donating 100% of the proceeds to fund the creation of protective face shields – which are then donated (not sold) to healthcare and emergency workers.

This project is the brainchild of VinylBomb‘s owner Chris Rodkey, and TEEEL.

After the COVID outbreak, Chris realized he could re purpose his production to create much-needed PPE gear for healthcare workers facing the COVID crisis. He created a prototype, and made the template open source so anyone with a CNC or laser cutter could make them. He also began a GoFundMe, with all fund raised dedicated to creating and donating these essential face shields.

TEEEL, seeing this fundraiser took it upon himself to coordinate with 24 synth artists and the record label Synth Records to create “Waves of Hope.”

The compilation itself is an eclectic mix of well produced synth, ranging from intense crunchy darksynth to chillwave and retrowave – and plenty in-between.

Containing a little bit of everything ,”Waves of Hope” is a well rounded and beautiful mix for a good cause. Even without the donations, this is not a release you would want to miss!

Sierra – Gone EP

The newest EP to seethe from the hatred and gloom that is Sierra’s mind is simply entitled “Gone.” This EP is a stunning foray into darkness, an atmospheric mirror of high-production slow-motion violence. It feels like the perfect evolution to 2017’s “Strange Valley”, gaining ground and solidifying her delicious, ghastly sound.

“Gone” is easily some of the most interesting and forward thinking darksynth we’ve heard yet this year, bringing to mind Street Fever’s first release, the “Afflictions EP.” Although “Gone” certainly has some similar tonalities, it feels slower and more methodical, deliberate and intense. The production on this EP is just exquisite as well, conjuring an atmosphere unlike any we’ve heard recently.
