EDIT: Thanks to a lot of work from the community, most of the stolen tracks have been removed. Hopefully, the Shazam will be taken down soon too. Great job everyone!

Overnight, a grand drama has developed in the synth scene. The darksynth / electro producer CYBERTHING! was scrolling through Spotify to discover new music, when instead discovered the remnants of a digital heist! The alleged thief in this case had not stolen credit card numbers or bitcoin – but rather, music. Darksynth and cyberpunk to be exact – as well as album art.

It looks like the alleged thief manipulated the tracks so the Automatic Content ID system didn’t catch them. Cyberpunk indeed!

But this isn’t just a story of alleged theft – it’s also a story about how the larger synthwave community came together to identify the stolen tracks, notify the artists, and hunt down the perpetrator!

The Find

“I was just looking for new music. I’m always looking for some new unnamed artists who can do something interesting….

So I found this guy’s ‘album’ and the first track was awesome (of course it was, cause it was Street Cleaner – Vultures) but I didn’t understand it right away, since the track was a little pitched down and sounded a lil different. But the second track was Perturbator lol. So I started to Shazam the tracks and made this Tweet after that.” – CYBERTHING!

The alleged perpetrator of this heist appears to be one “Electromedison.” They may also go by “DO.RE.MI.XX Production Story,” and/or “Cybershot.” It appears many of these albums and tracks have been up under false names for almost a year.

We reached out to Electromedison for a comment, but at the time of this writing, we have had no response.

Editors Note: We will not link to these “releases,” and we strongly discourage you from seeking out these releases too, as we do not want to give this alleged thief any money from streaming!

If you are a darksynth/cyberpunk artist and you’re worried your music may have been stolen, the unidentified tracks are listed at the bottom of this article, and most of the albums in question can be found on Electromedison’s Soundcloud, and they do not appear to be monetized there.

The Search Begins

Upon finding these maliciously uploaded tracks, CYBERTHING! spread the word on social media, tagging every artist who’s work he could identify. News spread like wildfire, and soon the fine folks over in Nightride FM’s discord channel had begun the hunt, finding and notifying many of the artists who had their work stolen. Eventually, DEADLIFE compiled and tweeted a list of the stolen tracks and the original artists the awesome Nightride FM community could identify.

Dozens of darksynth and cyberpunk artists and their labels are affected, including:

Street Cleaner

Perturbator

MADES

Chaos Vector

Jack Maniak

Anacrhonist

Pomidor

Hexenkraft

Dreddd

Tokyo Rose

Graveslayer

Midnight Danger

Irving Force

Daniel Deluxe

Knightbots

Alex

Neon Nox

Nightcrawler

Tonebox

Compilerbau

Kick Puncher

Lazerpunk

VHS Glitch

Darkshine

F.O.O.L

Coderpunk

Sandman

In fact, it seems every single track from these releases was allegedly stolen, though there are still unidentified tracks.
(See the full list of stolen tracks below.)

It also appears the album art was also stolen, with one of them being identified as Steven Holliday’s Creepshow anniversary poster.

A number of artists also confided in me they believe they have found the original perpetrator, but we will not provide real names here, as we aren’t in the business of witch hunts. However, a friend-of-a-friend reached out to the person in question – and this was his response:

The Mystery Deepens

Haven’t heard of Electromedison? Us either – in fact, no one really has. This “artist” has zero social profiles. In spite of this, the pirated tracks have been spread all around the net: they’re on Spotify, Shazam, Itunes, Amazon, Beatport, TikTok, – you name it.

That’s actually why I’m writing this article – so artists who are affected can find their tracks and be sure to report them on their respective services. I can’t imagine anything worse than losing fans because Shazam took you to an imposter’s tracks.

There’s only one way that so many different platforms could fall prey to this scheme: a music distribution service.

In this case, it seems that the distro service in question is FreshTunes, though there could have been other services involved as well.

We want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and to their credit, FreshTunes clearly states in their Terms of Service that copyright-infringing material is not acceptable on their platform – and the content is currently being taken down – so this does seem like the actions of one rogue actor, and not FreshTunes. It has also been less than 24 hours since the initial complaints were made too – that’s a pretty quick turnaround time for takedowns – though the music in question is still available in several places.

We reached out to FreshTunes for a comment, but at the time of this writing, we have had no response.

This month of March will have been a seemingly quiet one to many casual listeners and fans of bandcamp electronic music. Whilst many patiently await the imminent release of Perturbator’s enigmatic new album, the retrowave found itself in a near-dormant state this month, as though it were entering a mid-spring hibernation phase to hasten the arrival of summer and its hopeful promises of a world less grey. For those still awake, here’s a good handful of top-tier releases to sink your teeth into. You’ll be glad to have not missed these little gems along the way.

After just recently getting his own video game, Street Cleaner just released the killer new album “EDGE” – and it absolutely SLAPS!

This is a truly hellacious mix of darksynth, cyberpunk, outrun, and industrial. Together these various influences create a fantastic update to the Street Cleaner’s sound, making “EDGE” one of his best albums to date. “EDGE” really is a total banger, filled to the boiling brim with futuristic sci-fi viciousness.

There’s also the Street Cleaner narrative that’s constantly playing the background, telling a story of the hyper-violent vigilante fighting against crime.

“I Know This to Be True:
Crime will not stop, It will take on many forms, It will evolve to always be cutting edge. But That doesn’t matter. Someone will still be there to smash it back into submission. Be it 1880, 1980, or 2080, it makes no difference. There will always be a Street Cleaner, the Legacy System.”

The intensity of the music works perfectly with this narrative, as even without the album art, or the video game, it’s easy to imagine giant mechas locked in eternally explosive combat when you listen to these tracks. Street Cleaner has included some radical guitar work on “EDGE,” which folds seamlessly together with the synth without much kitsch.

What really makes the package complete are the many additional artists featured on “EDGE.” Awesome album art from Daniel Eichinger, features from video game sound designer Aubrey Hodges and guitarist Jake Hellend, additional art from Ian Cowell, and other we’re probably missing – merge to create the astounding package that is “EDGE.”

Grab a listen here now – just make sure you don’t cut yourself on all that EDGE!

With the global pandemic COVID-19 creating a scary health and financial situation for many, NewRetroWave would like to take an opportunity to use this platform to spotlight some of the extremely talented musicians and artists from around the world, who, at the time of this article’s publication, can enjoy 100% of the royalties from the sales made on Bandcamp. At the bottom of this page are the links to over 30 artists in the scene. If you’d like, you can go straight to there and jump over to Bandcamp to start listening and supporting some artists who would both appreciate and deserve the support right now. Synthwave is incredible for many reasons. You wouldn’t be reading this if it weren’t for the aesthetic, the mood, the songcraft on display throughout the scene that brought you in, but it is also a scene built on community. That community has been reacting differently to the fears and anxieties of COVID-19.

While every country has been impacted in some capacity, there’s no denying that some have been or currently are being hit harder than others. “In my country it has had a great impact,” says Lleida, Spain based artist Nightcrawler. “It isn’t very productive musically because I can not go to the studio, but I am enjoying being with my son and my wife all day long in my house”.

In addition to studio time being hindered, some artists, like Barcelona, Spain based SUNESIS, have felt the impact on live performances.”My last Live show was on 7th March, right before quarantine was imposed in Barcelona. I had another proposal for a live show for mid April /early May that had to be postponed,” she says. Adding that “Spain’s economy is suffering tremendously and my salary has been reduced. Social media was crowded with opinions and recommendations on how to experience confinement but I honestly feel this depends on the person.”Despite the hardship, she adds “I am feeling peaceful, hopeful, and introspective.”

Fellow Spanish artist Electric Runner echoes the sentiment of optimism in this trying time, stating that despite the “obvious and awful impact to the music scene with all the shows and tours canceled”, that they are trying to stay positive, noting that “this is the first time in a couple of years when I have all this time to work on my music, some days are better than others but I’m trying to get the most of this situation, I know it’s not easy for everyone and I don’t say that you are in an obligation to be productive but if you ever wanted to start something artistic this is the perfect time.”

The idea of making the best of a terrible situation isn’t an uncommon one in this time, and really that shouldn’t be a surprise coming from a scene with a fetishistic obsession of lost neon futures. Connecticut, USA-based STRAPLOCKED has a similar positive attitude, saying “So far, it’s given me a bit more time to work on my music. I spend less money going out, spend less time driving, and that has yielded stronger relationships with my fiance and our children, [as well as] more time for music and more time to work on projects around the house.” STRAPLOCKED also brings up a point I haven’t seen discussed much. Where you are at in your life is going to impact how easy or hard lockdown is for you. “I think if I was about 10 years younger, having to stay home would REALLY affect me negatively but at this point in my life the last 2 months have felt almost like a vacation. I can imagine that’s a wildly unpopular opinion but, it’s how I feel nonetheless.”

There’s a bittersweet undercurrent in the minds of some artists as well. For Iowa, USA’s SHIKIMO, the added time for productivity comes at a social cost. “I was able to finish up my new EP in the extra time I’ve had that I’m not spending with friends.” SHIKIMO, like many, are trying to stay positive by focusing on whatever the most recent positive news they have is, which for him has been appearing on Spotify’s official Retrowave/Outrun playlist.

Despite the optimism, it’s important not to forget that the artists who we often interact with as neon avatars online are real people with real jobs and lives that have been impacted, all the more reason to lend them your support today.

Artists who make their living from music and gigs are impacted as much as artists who are now working more than ever at day jobs to make ends meet. Miami, Florida’s INTEGRA-85 tells one such story. “I haven’t been able to play shows and the lockdown has dampened my ability to focus on writing music. I’ve had to focus almost on work just to make ends meet in a house where all my roommates just lost all their jobs.” This is unfortunately a common reality for many, including Russian-based CYBERTHING!.

What’s perhaps most difficult for me as a member of the scene who has admittedly a minute impact on the scene or sales is that I really want to implore readers and listeners of NRW who have the means during this time to support as many of the artists listed below as they can. All of these artists deserve your attention, your streams, your album purchases.

I have a tremendous amount of gratitude to the artists in this scene and consider myself very lucky to write about their music.

The vigilante of synth, Street Cleaner, is back… with a video game?

That’s right folks. Street Cleaner is set to purge the streets this fall with a brand new retro action indie game from Creaky Lantern Games. Taking on the lead role as Street Cleaner himself, you will eradicate crime from the city and face “…intense boss fights like Master Feng the ninja overlord, Big Jerry the dance club manager, and Agent Artemis sniper extraordinaire.”

For the new game Street Cleaner created an entirely new, intense and authentic 8-bit soundtrack, something which was new to the artist:

“The entire In-Game soundtrack is chiptunes like you would find in that period game. I spent a great deal of time learning an archaic DAW to painstakingly wrote a whole new soundtrack that is authentic as possible….It was very difficult to wrap my head around the software. I’ve been using the same DAW exclusively for 15 years, so stepping back into an old tracker style sequencer was not easy. But the end goal was worth it!” – SC

Check out the trailer below, and check out Street Cleaner: The Video Game here on Steam!

San Diego based Street Cleaner is back with an enormous vengeance in “Annihilation” – what may well be one of the best darksynth releases of the summer, if not the year!

Rocketing to the top of the bandcamp charts with a Monday night release, “Annihilation” tries hard to bend and break darksynth genre tropes, refusing to “…reuse patterns that had proven successful in the past.” This approach has paid off – creating an album that feels accessible while providing an excellent atmosphere in addition to the hard hitting dance floor destroyers we’ve come to expect from Street Cleaner. Check out the full album here – and note there are still vinyls left!

To cap off a great year for retrowave music, I’ve compiled a
list of ten amazing newcomers to the scene from 2014. While the artists near
the top of this list are personal favorites, and some are more popular than
others, this list isn’t meant to stratify them. It is meant to bring them all
to your attention, for the first time or all over again.

10: Colonizer

Texas- based Colonizer released his debut “Dawn of the
Hunter” in May, and quickly followed up with November’s self-titled work. While
both are quite good, the fun part here is listening for the improvement and
growth between the albums. One of the more enjoyable parts of my work for NRW
is observing the growth of newer artists, and Colonizer did not fail to impress
me. He is one worth keeping an eye on!

9: Android Automatic

Talk about a guy who’s got it figure out. Android Automatic may
have been making and playing music before 2014, but hadn’t released any of it
to us until this year. Upon listening, all I can say is that it perfectly fits
the formula, and that is a compliment, not an insult. AA produces crisp,
unforgivingly precise retrowave, with rich synths and a truly classic ear-feel.

8: Panda P. I.

Here’s someone who’s spent the entire year cranking out good
tunes, and I feel dumb for having overlooked it. Panda P. I. debuted in
January, releasing a few EPs and even featuring on an indie game soundtrack.
Just this month he released his first full-length, “Victim of Technology,”
which is very good. While staying true to form, Panda P.I. plays a little with
the formula and keeps you on your toes while you listen. There is also a
wonderful metamorphosis of style and skill across his work. It is all worth
taking in.

7: Glass Apple Bonzai

Glass Apple Bonzai is certainly something else. Much of
newer retrowave music focuses on the synth and doesn’t primarily feature
singing or lyrics, but Glass Apple Bonzai throws that out the window. Upon first jumping in and firing up the
self-titled album, my thought was “it’s good that Thomas Dolby and those other guys
have someone to pass the torch to.” And that’s not a bad assessment. It is very
tight music, with attention paid to quality throughout, but the guy has a good
voice, too! Here’s hoping we hear much more from Glass Apple Bonzai in the
future.

6: Mega Corp

Mega Corp has released just a small handful of tracks so
far, but I wanted to feature him for a couple of reasons. One of these is that
he hails from my home state of North Carolina. I believe that makes exactly two
of us out here who are into retrowave. The other is that, while his work is
sparse, it has been good enough that he has been featured in NRW compilations
before. Therefore, you may have heard him. I sincerely hope he gives us more to
hear; as well as having only made a couple of tracks, he also hasn’t made much
about himself known outside of his location. Personally, I’ll be watching this
guy like a hawk. He seems to have a good sense of dramatic buildup in his
music, and also a good ear for blending tones.

5: Dana’s Vision

This Swedish artist is another one who’s done sparse work
but ended up on one or more of our comps. From what little I’ve heard, this is
outrun-style music at its finest. You want to get in your car and count the
white lines down the highway. Dana’s Vision is another one I expect great
things from.

4: Lazerpunk

Lazerpunk, a Hungarian retrowave artist, went ahead and
debuted with a full-length album this past August. Since then he has busted a
few tracks here and there, but I wanted to draw attention to him because he’s
got something else good going for him: He’s very approachable. Many musicians
milk the mysticism of being aloof and hard to reach; not so our Lazerpunk. I
have an interview with him that will be published later on. As far as his
music, it is nice and sharp, with a dark flavor but no lack of energy to it.
“Game Over” is an album worth listening to.

3: Street Cleaner

Also easy to approach and phenomenally talented, Jesse
Bishop aka Street Cleaner was pretty busy during 2014. Starting out in July
with a set of remixes, Street Cleaner kicked ass all through 2014. His current
album, “Payback,” was just recently reviewed by yours truly and was a real
treat. He also has an interview published on our site. Street Cleaner isn’t
screwing around; he’s got his look down, his aesthetic settled on, and he’s got
a solid reputation already despite being new to the scene.

2: Sagittarius V

“Lucidator” was featured on our most recent compilation, and
we all thought it deserved to be; this guy is amazing. Hailing from Belgium,
Sagittarius V snuck out and dropped some bombs on us. 2014 for him included
“Symphonies In Space” and “Renegade,” two excellent short albums with very
different themes. While “Symphonies” seems much more experimental, “Renegade”
fits like a Tetris block into the retrowave aesthetic and is good from front to
back. Sagittarius V is poised to continue impressing us, and I for one hope he
plans to hit us again and again with tracks as great as “Lucidator.”

Oh, where to start with VHS Glitch. His “Digital Rebirth”
occurred in April and he’s been at it with a fury ever since. He’s appeared on
our comps, we’ve featured his songs on YouTube, and he’s been busy popping out
albums and remixes and just not letting up.
VHS Glitch shows little sign of slowing down, either: the dude has
finished up 2014 by releasing a set of remixes for free as a gift to his fans.
And to address the music for a moment, it is fare for any 80s soundtrack. If I
flew a spacecraft, this stuff would definitely make the cut for my interstellar
road trip mix tape.

Q:Tell me about your style in your own words, and about what music influences you as an artist.

-I’ve always been into music, Electronic music. In the late 90’s I cut my teeth in the Impulse tracker / Fast tracker Gabber scene. Then moved into chiptunes. I found that the music I appreciated and remembered most was from Video Games and 80’s movies. I worked on video game arrangements for a while then finally got a chance to score a ream video game, Aeternum on Xbox and PC. After that project I felt I owed it to myself to also write the soundtrack to an 80’s movie (My other passion in life) and wrote the soundtrack to an action/noir vigilante film “Street Cleaner” about a law abiding detective by day, and masked baseball bat wielding vigilante by night. I drew a lot of influences from, well, movies. My Ipod is FULL of 80’s movies soundtracks. It’s practically all I listen to.

Q:What equipment and/or software do you use? also, what is the creative process like for you when you sit down to work on music?

-I parted with a pretty decent collection of hardware about 5 years ago. I kept my Korg MS2000 and my guitars (Namely, Ibanez HRG1), but found that I can be a much more productive artist with VSTs and other plugins. I’m embarrassed to say, but I still use an old version of FL studio 8. But you know, I’ve spent to much time with it, I’m afraid to leave it. I know it inside and out.

Outside of strictly music, what aspects of 80s retro culture influence you or stick out in your mind?

-The true artistic nature of the 80’s. People weren’t afraid to take risks. If you look at movies like Manhunter and Blade Runner, They are both standout artistic perfection that in no way had a predecessor. Terminator, The Keep, Akira, Lost Boys, Gremlins, Beetlejuice, American Werewolf, THE LIST GOES ON! All great artistic endeavors that took risks.. Not like the ‘Play it safe’ bullshit of recent history. Studios would rather give Adam Sandler another 50 million then take a 20 million risk on a potential visionary.

Q: Outside of synthwave/retrowave music, what kinds of music do you enjoy? What other genres?

-Video game music. I listen to game music about as much as anything else. Knowing the sound chip limitation of some of the older game consoles and hearing what these guys were able to make them do just makes my jaw drop. Street of Rage 2 and Gunstar Heroes are prime examples. It’s almost as if the physical limitations unlocked limitless potential.

Q: Just recently, you released “Payback,” which was a superb album. What’s in the works now? What does the future hold for Street Cleaner?

-I’ve got a few Irons in the fire right now. The most important of which is a new video game soundtrack. I’ve already started work on a game that is being developed for PS4 and Steam. It’s a much more energetic outrun style game that will be done under the Street Cleaner moniker. I look forward to bridging the gap between Synthwave/Outrun and Game Music.
