The shadowy figure in the background is a good representation of the surprises lurking in the actual music.

It’s an under-appreciated art to be able to make an album’s cover embody the musical content. I am reviewing Sagittarius V’s music, but the subtleties of the artwork on the new Renegade EP give you a good idea of what to expect. The shadowy figure in the background is a good representation of the surprises lurking in the actual music.

The album opens with a rather simple moog-ish rhythm that is quickly pulsing to vintage beats. Sometimes this sort of pulsating beat/synth combo can be overbearing, but on “Lucidator” it succeeds in creating atmosphere. This EP in general and this track specifically creates a defined atmosphere, one that would prove effective in a film or game score. The melody is catchy, but it is not simple. Parts of it sound as though they were originally written on a guitar or composed by someone who listens to a lot of technical metal. The hi-hat in the quieter section of the song ricochets off of the glassy synth in a really unique and original way. It is a strange and exciting listen that had me replaying the track several times.

The title track is the highpoint and the inclusion of vocals created something special (is that two reviews in a row now where the best track is titled “Renegade”?). The decision to not make the vocals excessively breathy and laden with reverb was a wise one, as the distortion added a borderline dystopian feeling. The song creates very interesting juxtaposition between lighthearted bounciness and a moody urgency.

“The Night” and “Sunrise”, the middle two tracks of the EP, are obvious companion pieces. Of the two, “The Night” is more memorable, with a twinkling synth that feels like a cold night wind in a city. The latter song has a guitar solo that absolutely cuts through the mix. It’s unfortunate that a song with such interesting sections, mainly the solo and the smooth use of guitar on the verse, also winds up being a little underwhelming. It’s definitely an idea that I’d be excited to hear Sagittarius V pursue further in the future.

A song that comes close to the emotion of “Renegade” follows. It has a bit of a rocky start and I was worried the release would prove to be top heavy, but some of the prettiest melodies of the whole batch of songs start finding their way to the front. The song becomes frantic and starts playing around with accelerating and decelerating tempos. It’s definitely the darkest track.

The EP ends with a slower song that manages to match every other song on the album in terms of sheer energy. Sound-bites in songs can come across as cringe worthy at times, but “Standby… Me” sidesteps this with a catchy synth line, surprisingly complex drum pattern, and soaring guitar. I won’t lie, my initial listen had me placing this song as one of the worst on the EP. Subsequent listens really let this song shine. Since this album runs the gamut in terms of emotion, Sagittarius choosing to end the album on a smooth crescendo of hope left me smiling and eager to listen again.

Does this album break new ground as far as the genre is concerned? No. It doesn’t have the most unique synth tones in the world, but the flair and invention is in most of the compositions themselves. This solid collection of songs is not just an enjoyable listen, but an enjoyable re-listen.

By Rhys Pearce

Over the years,

Canada

has had a knack for producing some great music, everything from the likes of

Glenn Gould

to

D.O.A

and

Miami Nights 1984 are no exception. MN84 is Michael Glover, a synth revival pioneer and helmsman of

Actrazer

. He is also notably known as the founder of the highly influential,

Rosso Corsa Records

, a record label that is responsible for bringing us the likes of,

Lazerhawk, Mitch Murd

er and

Jordan F.

In 2010, MN84 introduced himself to us with the breakthrough album, ‘

Early Summer’

, an accomplished and confident debut featuring 9 tracks of groove ridden, dreamy synth pop. What’s immediately evident here is his ability to encapsulate nostalgic bliss and create towering sounds that stir those deep routed emotions of the 80’s. It became evident at this point that we were dealing with someone with enormous talent.

During the recording of his second album, a remix he did of

Gotye’s

‘Somebody that I used to know’ exploded onto the internet, even reaching the attention of Rolling Stone, who later featured the song on their website. This would play an integral part in exposing him to a much larger audience and opening the door wider for the new wave synth movement. It’s very rarely that you hear a remix that totally blows the original song out of the water; MN84’s custom sound combined with Gotye’s melodic vocal line, embrace one another like a long lost love and come together as if how fate had intended. On March 18

th

2012, MN84 dropped his anticipated second full length album entitled,

Turbulence, with

many hailing it as his finest work to date. The notable difference between ‘

Early Summer

’ and ‘

Turbulence

’ is that Glover appeared to find an extra gear on

Turbulence

, lifting the atmospheric tones to new heights and packing in extra punches with some seriously memorable hooks.

In the meantime, Glover has been keeping busy with various remixes with the likes of the Grammy nominated,

Electric Youth, as well as Night Crawler, Silent Gloves

and

Kristine

. He has also briefly resurrected

Actazer

, posting a new song online entitled ‘

The Return

’ and has even hinted at a new collaboration project called ‘

Future Noir

’ with close friend,

DJ Murge

.

In March of this year MN84 made a welcome return, posting a new song on his Facebook page, named

“Reflex Training

’. This subsequently reduced some fans to quivering messes, with one dude stating that his face “….has been melted!”. Even though the song didn’t appear to be a massive departure from the sound heard on his previous record, something tells me that we can expect something very special from the new material. Are you excited? Because I certainly am.

Straight to the answer – we are a duo. The band consists of me - Pasha Star, and my friend Pavel Saushkin.

1. Hello XES, it is very nice to meet you. Can you please tell us a bit about the group as a whole? (How/where/when did you meet etc. We will get into the individuals later)

Hello, nice to meet you too and thank you very much for the interview! It is an honor.

Straight to the answer – we are a duo. The band consists of me – Pasha Star, and my friend Pavel Saushkin. We’ve met when I was searching for a musician to start my own music project. I really loved the way he perceives the music, the way he treats melody and can play with bits of sound creating our unique sound. That is what I like about our partnership – I create songs in my head and Pavel manages to transfer it in reality as I have pictured it. Nonetheless, his own work is very nice and I do not create all of the songs of course. The band formed in July 2014, after we tried to make couple of songs together. It was like a trial period to test whether we can manage cooperation and do something really interesting. It worked out as you may see. After some paperwork we started to build our name.

2. Can each of you (band members) give us 5 interesting facts about yourselves.

Pasha Star

: Ok, I will try first. Most of it is somehow connected to Japan, because I started my singing career there.

1 – I can speak and write lyrics in Japanese;

2 – Failed at Sony Music Audition Japan in the finals, because I was so nervous I strained my voice.

3 – I took part in variety of Japanese TV shows and commercials as a model and a singer during my time in Japan.

4 – I am Russian but my background is a mixture of different ethnicities.

5 – I am almost 6’4 tall.

Pavel Saushkin

:

Well, as for me….

1 -hmmm

2 -well….

3 -……

4 -….I

5 -…..Hmmm

Pasha Star

: He is a genius!

Actually it was harder than I thought because when it comes to describing oneself all of the memory just disappears into somewhere and at the same time nobody wants to look like a boaster

3. How would you describe your sound?

Pasha Star

: Right now, we have no particular genre in mind. We do identify ourselves as an electropop band, but our upcoming album will consist from different music genres – starting from synth pop and/or nu-disco ending with witch house. We want it to be a like a space travel – each song is a different planet.

Pavel Saushkin

: Eventually, we believe, this should bring us to something even more interesting in terms of genres and style. Let’s see where it takes us.

4

. The video for “Black Tears” is immense, but it also seems like there is a hidden meaning behind the video. Could you explain what we witness?

Pasha Star

: Actually, it is a start of our Black Tears Saga project. We are planning to create and include a game and some short animation clips coupled with our music. It is a highly metaphysical, surreal, and allegorical story about a girl named Destiny. She is blind but she can see the world through the sounds, spoken words and her own imagination. The music video puts a viewer in a scene where she has fallen into the lies of a Dark One, who has deceived her into thinking that the Saint – the guy in white – is in fact a Liar and that false “truth” makes her cry the tears of grief empowering the Dark One. The guy in white is the Truth as he carries the attributes of strength and weakness at the same time: a strong body but he is handicapped. There is a lot of symbolism such as the table that represents life and the masks that carry the idea that the whole world is a theatre and etc.

: I admired her music since I was a child. At that time, I did not realize I would be able to record a song with her someday. When I have started doing my own music, I have decided to send one of my demos to her and she, to my utter astonishment, responded. Since then we’ve worked together on some of her songs (I was responsible for writing some of the lyrics) and when we were about to release our debut single “Black Tears” I asked her whether she can add some vocals to it. She agreed and the result turned out really great.

Intro

The car revs. The nightline opens up to me. The streetlamps dotting the highway
fall away one after the other. All I can think about is her. I like the way the
pedal feels under my foot. I like the dying purples and violets and cracks of
blood orange cutting the sky open.

I am not ready.

Digital Power

The asphalt in the city is slick and black and hopelessly clean. The neon never
lets up. Deals are made on fat cell phones. Attitudes are girded with steel.
Certainties are born of cocaine confidence and bottle blonde hair. Everyone
wears skinny, square-bottomed ties. Whether it’s Parliaments or Marlboros, the
cloud is dense and makes our skin slick and thick.

The sleeves of my blazer are scrunched up around my elbows and I’m trapped in
this haircut. Newspapers whistle around in the ocean breeze coating the club.
My back is propped up by the gray wall and I exhale.

Electric Paradise

This scene is done. Vampires take everything. Their constant hunger saps all
the sound out of my pretense. I feel silenced by their darkness; imposed. I
dress the way the smartest magazines tell me and I still wonder why this is my
soundtrack. Every hollow, rending moment stuck in between notes, I’m reminded
why she left me. She says it all the time; in my ear.

What does it even mean to be “connected?” I did everything right. Everything.
So why can’t I own you too? Is my turquoise shirt not enough for you? Bitch,
I’m rad. Your square shoulders are too; were too.

Fighter

Oh, fuck this feeling. Really, any feeling at all. All I need is a good montage
and I’ll be right again. I will be a winner of every race. All I need are
quarters for the arcade. All I need is a sensei in my dojo. I need clay pots to
kick. I need struggle but without the patience for what it bares best. I need
to hold the fast-forward button or I’ll eject.

There must be something more than thinking.

Arms of Mine

The cherry glows at the tip. The paper of it burns under my $600 umbrella.
Tropical rain splashes on top of it and my flat black roof. The city stretches
its concrete fist up into the sky and belches out a haze of lead and acid that
cracks the sunlight. The colors fan and spatter like the calloused place in me
where she used to live. I look down at my wristwatch.

It’s only been fifteen minutes. That’s lame. These books and articles are
worthless. All that matters is how I can get back to being cool. My shoes are
going to be ruined. I like that I can afford not to care. I could kick a puddle
on the uneven tar. I’m not going to. That’s kid stuff.

Why is her voice still here? What am I turning into?

Radio

It’s happening. Feelings.

The tentacles of memories wrap around the outside of everything I burden to
keep up. I feel the squeeze of it like that boa constrictor we saw at the Miami
MetroZoo. I became obsessed with them. I saw every nature show about them.
There was something my insides were trying to tell me. All I could see and feel
and think was the twisting of the snake around its quarry. I loved it. I hated
it. I liked the eyes of the dying thing and the smooth skin of yellow and
white, mottled for my pleasure.

This is All We Know

And when it dies, it dies hard. Life just evaporates. Another vampire of a
moment; of a hope. The bones snap and pop under the strength of it. Blood
rushes sweetly into the world as my cool hits the eject button.

And now all that’s left is the maw; unhinged and swallowing. Now I go into the
dark and transform into the snake-shit of love-lost.

Ha. Love. What does that even mean? I’m only now getting to it as the sax
plays. It lets me know that there’s more music; that there’s more poison.

Here I Am

Logan, I am your tears. Streaming down your face. Your new electric razor is
collecting dust. Work is calling you. Where are you, Logan?

All I can be is clear. All I can know is you. I am of you. I am from you.

Arresting you.

That’s it. That’s right. Wake up, Logan. Shave. Smell good. Wear blazers. Let
the Devil win all over again. Sharpen your teeth. Kill the me inside of you.
Fill your hunger with more hunger. Know you are the best. Learn nothing. Be
nothing. Let harm flow through you. Be the fucking snake, motherfucker.

Call work on that fat cell phone. Wear that square-bottom tie. Spritz yourself.
Light another smoke.

You Are You Are

Time to dance in slow motion. Time to go to another club because I was always
right. Do another line of coke. Live up to every message in your high school
senior yearbook. Stay crazy. Stay cool.

Look at this one for example. What is she trying to pull off? Madonna? That’s a
lot of black. But it’s time to dance in slow motion. It’s time to unhinge my
jaw.

The dance floor is just a bedroom full of people fucking with their clothes on.
This one is mine. I want her to be a furry rodent.

Magnifique

Under the strobing lights, her black chiffon and sequin curiosity slithered
close to me. Her dark lipstick winked at me through that smile. Cigarettes in
my right right hand and her left; creating a symmetry of something new. She was
going to be just another notch. Another nothing, just like me.

But her eyes. Her snake eyes.

They looked like mine.

Tokyo Blues

The dawn was killing the last bits of blue. The satin was smooth between us.
Just kissing. I hated it.

This isn’t what I needed to do. I’ve just traded one master for another.

Oh fuck it.

She’s an electric fire I can’t put out. This night turns into every night. And
it’s impossible. And I hate it.

But I hate it a little less. Every time the night robs me of another day, I
feel it becomes okay. She’s not like April. Or maybe she is.

Or maybe thinking about feeling is best left to the vampires and snakes of the
world.

1-UP

I’m holding her hand. I’m not so cool anymore.

We walk passed an arcade — the one that needed the quarters. It was dark and
brilliant. Like a black cave full of blinking neon and sharp sounds.

People winning and losing. Fighting and dying. Improving and giving up. And all
of the plays of life swirled before my eyes through the windows. Hallways made
of machines. Glowing tracks leading to high scores. This was a place of
struggle; a place of nature.

Tonight

I needed to go in. She saw that in me. She loved that.

Pinballs zapped. Dreams were shot to pieces, pixels were prizes and commerce
was afoot. All the clanks and clangles, zips and zaps, and throbbing lights
made magic. I looked at Layla and her eyes said, “Go on, try it.”

I was lost in focus; in my own personal montage. Layla stood there, proud
somehow; like a sensei. I kept improving myself with every quarter drop. I knew
this would become my secret. This would be my safe place.

I Will Show You

Every Wednesday night we went. We shared all the booms and pows. We were
feeling the same things at the same time. We got to know the regulars. And all
the smart magazines I had read seemed stupid now.

T-shirts were fine. Jeans were okay. When it rained, I didn’t even think of my
shoes, I just kicked the puddles.

Getaway

Layla is always under my umbrella. But so is April and everyone else. There’s
room for everyone. They are all a part of me. All on my dancefloor. We are
bound to the sound, even if it’s silence.

This is what it means to be connected.

This is what happened when I was left to my own devices.

Near Dark by Dance with the Dead

Having already released an album in March, music duo “Dance with the Dead” are back again with another work of retro music art that we have all come to know as “Near Dark.” Fans of the previous two albums (Out of Body, Into the Abyss) will not be let down as this album will take you on another powerful and melodic roller coaster ride (one with an undead theme of course).

The first five tracks are a work of non-stop energy that is put together in a perfect order. The opening song “Invader” sounds like it is giving you a preview of what you are about to experience on this album. Kind of like those appetizer samplers you can get at Applebees only instead of mozzarella sticks, quesadillas and chips you’re getting synth hooks, powerful drums, and guitar shredding. The song “Waves” might be the best song on this album as it has a catchy hook and a drum track that you will never get out of your head similar to other Synthwave epics like “So Electric” by Lifelike & “King of the Streets” by Lazerhawk.

The song “Eye of the Storm” gives you the sad feeling of expecting death. With its long, sad ensemble like sound this song could be playing on your stereo while you see a storm cloud that you know is full of acid rain slowly hovering over your city and you know what’s coming. It serves as a nice break from the non-stop energy you feel from the tracks before it.

The title track “Near Dark” and the song “The Pitt” might just be the two favorites of most Dance of the Dead fans and fans of anything 80s horror. If you were to put this song in the opening credits for a movie such as “Day of the Dead” or “Return of the Living Dead” you would have never guessed that this song was made in the year 2014.

Near Dark may just be Dance with the Dead’s best album yet. They’re still sticking to the horror theme that adds to the chilling but yet groovy vibe of their music and makes them stand out from the rest of the emerging music genre known as New Retro Wave. This album is a future classic and a must own for any fan of electronic music.

The Midnight: Days of Thunder

by

Andrea Sabiu

“Top class vocal and lyrics combined with a satisfying and genuine-‐as-‐can-‐be sound that take you on a trip down nostalgia lane.”

Sometimes melding together different music styles brings to life a very unique sound, and that’s the case of the Los Angeles based duo formed by Tyler Lyle and iAmData,

also known as “The Midnight”.

Their debut album “Days of Thunder” is a fusion experiment of contemporary electronic dance music with a touch of the 80’s retro styled synthesizers, a work of indubitable passion and cure for detail. But without further ado, let me tell you my impressions on this first glimpse of what “The Midnight” has in it’s sleeve…

Right from the first track, I immediately felt in a modern styled ambient, very “M83ish”; The sound of the 80’s, the synths, the pads, the feeling that Synthwave/Synthpop/Retrowave or however you want to call it generally brings up to it’s listeners, is more of a side dish, leaving space to a more prominent dream wave and progressive house setup; This is highly noticeable in the first three tracks.

The beat is strong and deep, very direct, while the harmony provides a nice spotlight for the voice track. A little side note here: vocals and lyrics don’t stand out too much, resulting flat and repetitive at times, but they generally fit well with the music.

The second part, starting from track four *Days of Thunder* , and ending with my personal favorite *Los Angeles*, brings back a more retro styled, almost outrun, musical setup. A couple of well placed synth, guitar and saxophone solos really hit that 80’s movie cliché that always feels good to get.

There is still a very persistent EDM touch, that makes the whole thing an interesting new experience to listen to.

Looking at the whole album, it certainly feels like a solid piece of work, my only concern is that every song may be perceived as “stretched”, with an average six minutes apiece, it could be easy to get lost in the somewhat repetitive EDM mood, forgetting about the music and reducing it to a mere background setting.

Wrapping it up, “Days of Thunder” is a fresh release, worthy to be played through at least a couple of times, maybe on a slow car ride towards the sunset, enjoying the soundtrack of a movie that only you can see and hear.

Track List

1. The Years (prologue)
