In 2010 Drive had yet to be released and the synthwave and new retrowave scene had not yet fully matured. Around this time a London-based band called Summer Camp released their debut EP, “Youth.”

“Youth” was not an attempt at synthwave or retrowave, terms which weren’t used much back in 2010. Summer Camp instead took aim at the then-hot genres of indie and electropop, and added a dash of nostalgia for good measure. Their inaugural single “Round the Moon,” somewhat missed it’s genre mark in the best of ways, creating instead an early example of proto-synthwave and retrowave.

“Round the Moon” is particularly interesting, as you can hear many hallmarks of now-familiar genres, yet it seems they were created from an entirely different angle than the neon outrun style that had yet to become. Not only that – the song is utterly fantastic! Smash that play button and travel back to 2010.

‘True Retro-pop Synthwave’

As most of you might have already heard, Manchester duo ‘Futurecop!’ dropped their new album at the end of November, entitled ‘Fairy Tales’ and its one that we’ve been looking forward to hearing at New Retro Wave. Much like its predecessor, ‘Hopes, dreams & Alienation’ released in 2013, the boys return with a host of guests from the likes of Timecop1983 & New Arcades to Twin Oaks & Highway Superstar. Here they stick with a more vocal orientated approach in comparison to what we’ve previously heard in their earlier instrumental work.

I began this review as I begin any other, sat comfortably, headphones plugged in and dressed head to toe in neon spandex. The record opens with ‘Into your heart’ Ft Hunz & Mosaik, a bitter sweet anthem that builds enough power to leave the hairs standing on the back of your neck. If there were one song that was meant to be played through earphones, this is it! The soaring dream like melody sucks you in immediately and sets the pace perfectly for the rest of the album to come. Track 2 ‘Secrets’ Ft JNS MSC is the first of the instrumental songs to appear, later followed by Till Eternity (I Miss you), Mermaids and Treehouse, all great snyth pieces that refamiliarize us with early Futurecop! and remind us just exactly why we fell in love with them in the first place.

Just how talented these dudes are is clearly visible within these instrumental pieces and their effortless ability for creating such beautifully vast and sonic synth pieces, truly makes for a memorable listen. Complete with a wonderful assortment of vocal guests, Futurecop! has made ‘Fairy Tales’ a real solid ensemble piece and what they’ve delivered is a sincere exploration of youthful innocence, together with a diverse viewpoint of love and hope. Tracks like ‘Sun is mine’, ‘Growing’ and ‘Eyes’ are definite album highlights, although none of the 12 songs featured stop short of being damn impressive. With its accessible poppy haze and unquestionable mainstream potential, its quite easy to envisage the duo gaining a great deal more attention in the future.

Together with the release of the album, Futurecop! have also created 6 original videos in collaboration with Luke Thompson of Canopy Films. The beautifully captured films add an extra visual layer and help bring a cinematic edge to the songs. I strongly urge you to check them out and allow yourself to be swept away within Futurecop!’s nostalgic daydreams.

So while the winter weather begins to draw in on us, be sure to warm those retro hearts by adding a little Mancunian sunshine to your lives! Bravo Futurecop!.. Bravo.

THE STATE OF THE RETRO SCENE

The retro scene has been on an incredible rise in recent
years!! In fact, in just a span of 3
years since NRW formed, the retrowave scene has completely evolved into
something special that no one could have fathomed. Our scene is a completely unique online culture
waiting to take over the world!

The main focus now is not only where our scene is heading to,
but what our scene will be in a few years. With this thought, comes a MAJOR
predicament.

Do we remain underground/ behind the scenes and take over
the movie/ video game soundtrack? Or do we give it our all and get the
retrowave sound into the mainstream charts?

Online buzz vs Physical Buzz

Let’s face it. Most of the retro artists that have emerged
from the scene have mostly been in soundtrack outlets. Notable retro artists to
make it into a MAJOR movie soundtrack include Electric Youth (Drive/ Taken 2)
and College (Drive) as well as Power Glove (Hobo with a Shotgun). These guys
achieved this on an independent level. No majors!!! After this exposure all of
these artists have attained a fair amount of fans and exposure setting up what
seems to be a promising future.

There are many more artists who are soon to be on this road
including LazerHawk, Miami Nights 1984 and Perturbator. Soundtrack exposure
seems to be a certainty when you make music in the retrowave scene. But is this
all we were set out to conquer?!

There is no doubt in our minds that mainstream charts and
full exposure is what the retrowave scene deserves, but most do not think that
is what the retrowave scene needs. Remaining
underground ensures that the scene will not become overrun/ watered down and potentially
destroyed.

However, for this scene to grow, we need our artists to be
able to confidently put out their music and to also go on stage and rock out
the retro synths. The word of mouth from performances is extremely viral and
can set alight in these days. This will only come with mainstream exposure. No
true musician wants to have their music reach a limited crowd. They want the
WORLD to hear their music and spread it around like butter on bread!

A prime example being Com Truise. He is the guiding light
for us in this scene right now. Not only reaching billboard uncharted status,
Com Truise is looking like the closest out of the retro scene to get into the
billboard top 100 and thus worldwide radio. Unlike most artists in this scene,
Com Truises’ primarily focus was on getting his music to a MAJOR level. Most of Com’s buzz was built up independently
via touring and live performances as well as internet buzz.

Right now our scene is in GREAT form and is looking better
that ever. What we want is for emerging artists to actually have a chance to
reach EPIC levels through retrowave. We must expand our culture into other
outlets, if we truly want growth. If not, we can remain a soundtrack community.

Not a bad thing, but we should strive for more.

THERE WERE AND STILL ARE NO HARD FEELINGS.

WE HONESTLY THOUGHT THIS WAS AN OLD TRACK THAT WAS RECENTLY DISCOVERED. WE HAD NO INTENTION OF LEAKING ANY OF THEIR NEW MATERIAL AT ALL!! WE PROMPTLY TOOK IT DOWN AND NOW YOU GUYS WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL “GET ALONG” IS RELEASED OFFICIALLY!!
