Firstly, I apologise for the wait for this installment of Retro Motors. As it happens I have been shoveling money like coal into a furnace into my 944, which has meant that my life has turned into the cycle of work, sleep, repeat, whilst stealing food like some kind of countryside based Aladdin. Eating badly and spending a lot of time indoors doing sweet FA, reminds me of the carefree time of my youth when I used to watch hours of cartoons on terrestrial and cable TV.

This months Retro Motors looks back at some of the best cartoon vehicles. Again the 80’s and early 90’s were the host to an abundance of all action vehicular combat based cartoons; ranging from the absolutely absurd, to some of the finest animated work to date. Taking a look over what people consider “The best cartoons” today, it’s clear to see that we have moved away from the more classic storytelling and instead opted for balls out, physiologically unsettling and surreal. Back then it was good vs evil, David vs Goliath, man vs machine- or a mix of all three. Not only did the majority of these cartoons tell of a great adventure or explore some primal instincts but they also looked damn cool.

A group I wholeheartedly feel should exist in real life is M.A.S.K (Mobile Armoured Strike Command). If money were no object I’d mobilise a team akin to M.A.S.K and chase ivory poachers with a flying Camaro that shoots rockets. People like Elon Musk think they’re doing the world a favour by producing silent cars and an underground tunnel, but I feel if I was wealthy enough, people would much rather watch a live feed of me in a flying Camaro bombing Japanese whaling boats.

Thunderhawk

No list of the coolest cartoon vehicles could end without mentioning Transformers, although my favourite robot was not only a bad guy but was never a vehicle in the first place. Sound wave, for me, always stood out for the fact he decided to talk through a vocoder and his arsenal consisted of a massive cannon and weaponised cassette tapes.

Yet no other cartoon character made such an impact on me than Optimus Prime. I seem to remember entering a Video Nest here in the UK and choosing a film for Friday night with my dad. From Thundercats to HE MAN, Jason and the Wheeled Warriors to Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles. What could go wrong with a full feature length film about these mighty metal heros? Optimus Prime could go wrong, that’s what.

Optimus Prime

There are some people who still believe that certain human beings, deceased yet period correct, still wander the earth as ghosts. It is believed that certain spectral entities come back with such tasks as moving trinkets, walking without purpose or simply switching on and off the lights. They may be one of the most underwhelming myths of the natural world but the Ghostbusters on the other hand are real and the film is a masterpiece. The Real Ghostbusters was the name of the animated series and what a series it was- exploring further into the characters whilst retaining all the fun and bizarre ghost stories of New York City.

Ecto 1 is a Cadillac- in case you didn’t know. Miller-Meteor, the famous coach builder, designed and manufactured modified versions for businesses who required a classy looking vehicle as big a boat. It had been used as an ambulance-come-hearse in some states of America and became infamous when it starred in the Ghostbusters film. The unforgettable wail of the siren and the bright colour scheme are as iconic as that silver car from Back To The Future.

Ecto 1

The best Batmobile has been and gone when Michael Keaton drove it back in 1989. Long, black, sleek and sexy, complete with mounted guns, turbine and armour plating. Since then the Batmobile has gone from looking like it runs the city, to something that looks like Super-Goth is trying to compensate.

A little later in 1992 Batman the animated series was launched. A beautifully animated, well scripted; timeless, moving comic, also featuring its very own Batmobile. In keeping with the gothic art deco style of the series, the Batmobile of this era is a brutal looking, four wheeled slab of a car. Housing what appears to be a monstrous V12 and with all the essential gadgets like teargas, bullet proof armour and missiles. The dark deco style was inspired by Tim Burton’s work and in my opinion deserves a live action version someday, if only to see the car for real.

The Batmobile

Not exactly a cartoon, more like an animated schizophrenic episode- Akira is an extraordinary masterpiece of technical ability, eccentric storytelling and cult imagery. Any New Retro Wave fan will tell you, the Neo-Tokyo setting is an unnerving mix of real world imagery and sci-fi elements that blend in such a brutal way, it’s going to leave a mark.

My lasting memory of the film however was not the face melting fight sequences but the bike. Kaneda is a young teen with a bad attitude. He’s also the leader of a biker gang who take no shit when it comes to the open road. His chosen chariot is renowned even before you get to see it. Rumour has it this thing was a 200mph, electronically driven sports bike. Whatever it is, it’s one of the coolest animated vehicles to date. Some die hard fans of the franchise have spent thousands creating exact replicas. It has even inspired Honda to create something that closely resembles Shotaro Kaneda’s iron horse.

Kaneda’s bike

These vehicles were at first animated, then became toys and now in some cases would become a reality. I may not be able to have my very own Batmobile but I’ve always thought cars and bikes bring adventure and can become a very real emotional attachment. I hope that even with the decline of fossil fuel burning vehicles, we could see a revival of memorable characters and and equally as memorable vehicular concepts.

The art created by 1970’s and 80’s artist Patrick Nagel has been a massive influence in the scene. His overwhelmingly popular art continues to resonate throughout the New Retro Wave area, as some modern artists and mediums of art allude to his classic vibrant style.

Nagel’s art composed of bald, elegant and vibrant illustrations of females, donning sophistication, mysteriousness and attention drawing expressions, reminiscent of expressionistic art of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Elena G. Millie, a curator of Nagel’s work, best summarizes his style:

“At any time there are a few who give form and meaning to their generation. Patrick Nagel’s emergence as one of these gifted few stemmed from his unique vision of the contemporary woman: She is elegant and sophisticated, exuding an air of mysterious enticement. She is capable, alluring and graceful, but also aloof and distant. You will never know this woman, though she stares out of the Nagel frame straight at you, compelling you to become involved, challenging you to an intense confrontation.”
– Elena G. Millie, Obtained from arthistoryarchive.com, July 2017

Mystery was the key element of Nagel’s art – the key theme that his contemporaries adopted, and an intrinsic theme that stays strong within the retrowave aesthetic.

1969 would see the start to his career, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University. He would later pick up a career in 1971 at ABC-TV, detailing graphics for channel promotions.

Arthistoryarchive.com have lorded him as a “Playboy art icon”, as he designed for the popular magazine throughout the mid to late 1970’s, however his place in the history of Retrowave is much more significant, with his art continuing to resonate throughout the New Retro Wave movement.

(Image from catawiki.com, NAGP 89 “The Playboy Portfolio II”, Nagel)

In the movement, Nagel is an unsung icon, creating works just before the vibrancy of the 90’s, during a time of great expressionism that would segway into the Pop-art era, taking art into an undefined territory. Today, this has made its way into our familiar minds.

There is no denying that Nagel’s art was a massive influence upon the 2015 Comedy Central production Moonbeam city – the show created by Scott Gairdner encapsulates many facets of the movement, through a nostalgic Miami-Vice theme, however the distinctive character illustrations and some of the execution of colour is a direct throw to the art of Nagel.

Album covers of our contemporaries often take a trend of throwing back to the art of Nagel, adapting it to further fit the aesthetic. The album cover of ALEX’s 2017 EP Youth takes on a Nagel-ic design, adding colour to the portrayal of the woman, along with greater detail of the hair, with shadow effects. Trevor Something’s “Trevor Something Does Not Exist” in 2014 took a similar artistic direction with its album cover.

Soundcloud and Bandcamp synthwave artist SelloRekT/LA Dreams (https://ladreams.bandcamp.com/track/nagel-girl) is also responsible for a nod to Nagel with song titled “Nagel Girl”. The song matches Nagel’s art well.

Photofrom SelloRekT/LA Dreams’ Bandcamp, “Nagel Girl”

In another area, the song “Desire – Under your spell” on Youtube has a throw to the art of the era. Popularised by 2011’s Drive, the fan-made music video uses Nagel-like imagery to be synced to the song – although the art is by Roy Lichtenstein, a contemporary of Nagel, synthesising a comic book-esk and pop art-ish aesthetic, the resemblance is noticeable, further cementing in place the impact of Nagel’s contemporaries. Needless to say, Lichtenstein has his own place in artistic history. The synths of the song throw in Nagel’s direction, but let’s not forget his contemporaries.

Photo from “Desire – Under Your Spell” (November 22, 2010), on YT Channel The Prismer, art by Roy Lichtenstein

Artists that explored this area as Nagels contemporaries and after Nagel’s untimely death include Carlos Sanchez, Dennis Mukai and Luis Preciado, who each added their own flavour to the artsphere.

It’s likely to say that Patrick Nagel has influenced the artistic direction of the movement greatly, adding mystery, sophistication and enticement that modern contemporaries have taken on board immensely.

As most of you might have already heard, Manchester duo ‘Futurecop!’ dropped their new album at the end of November, entitled ‘Fairy Tales’ and its one that we’ve been looking forward to hearing at New Retro Wave. Much like its predecessor, ‘Hopes, dreams & Alienation’ released in 2013, the boys return with a host of guests from the likes of Timecop1983 & New Arcades to Twin Oaks & Highway Superstar. Here they stick with a more vocal orientated approach in comparison to what we’ve previously heard in their earlier instrumental work.

I began this review as I begin any other, sat comfortably, headphones plugged in and dressed head to toe in neon spandex. The record opens with ‘Into your heart’ Ft Hunz & Mosaik, a bitter sweet anthem that builds enough power to leave the hairs standing on the back of your neck. If there were one song that was meant to be played through earphones, this is it! The soaring dream like melody sucks you in immediately and sets the pace perfectly for the rest of the album to come. Track 2 ‘Secrets’ Ft JNS MSC is the first of the instrumental songs to appear, later followed by Till Eternity (I Miss you), Mermaids and Treehouse, all great snyth pieces that refamiliarize us with early Futurecop! and remind us just exactly why we fell in love with them in the first place.

Just how talented these dudes are is clearly visible within these instrumental pieces and their effortless ability for creating such beautifully vast and sonic synth pieces, truly makes for a memorable listen. Complete with a wonderful assortment of vocal guests, Futurecop! has made ‘Fairy Tales’ a real solid ensemble piece and what they’ve delivered is a sincere exploration of youthful innocence, together with a diverse viewpoint of love and hope. Tracks like ‘Sun is mine’, ‘Growing’ and ‘Eyes’ are definite album highlights, although none of the 12 songs featured stop short of being damn impressive. With its accessible poppy haze and unquestionable mainstream potential, its quite easy to envisage the duo gaining a great deal more attention in the future.

Together with the release of the album, Futurecop! have also created 6 original videos in collaboration with Luke Thompson of Canopy Films. The beautifully captured films add an extra visual layer and help bring a cinematic edge to the songs. I strongly urge you to check them out and allow yourself to be swept away within Futurecop!’s nostalgic daydreams.

Starcadian’s new album, “Saturdaze,” is an homage to
Saturday morning TV, but that’s just where this collection of music begins.
This album’s intensity is not to be trifled with! The beats kick and run free;
these are all songs you could tear up a dance floor to. The real gem, however,
is the layers of instrumentation and FX. The whole album lifts you up, with
never a dull moment. “Saturdaze” keeps you on the plateau.

“Ultralove” launches us forward at a decent pace, only for
“Dance Or Die” to throw us into breakneck speeds. The beats kill, compelling
you to move your body. There is no escape; the drums hit you and it’s
unstoppable. The high end is nice and clean, with a gleaming and surprisingly
modern edge to the instrumentation that doesn’t shave anything off the retro
feel. “Money” is a darker, mid-paced track that nonetheless builds well and
creates its own excitement. More crisp synth and sampling, with a lot of great
vocoder work. Things pick up again, and
heavily so, with “Alien Victory,” a superb track and possibly my favorite on
the album. It is full of energy and triumph, and again compels you to tap your
foot (or more, if you’re not sitting down at a keyboard). Midway through, it
explodes into a wordless anthem, a victory march without words. It is truly
exceptional, full of heart. “Entoptica” cools us back down, but trust me, there
is nothing boring here. Rich, layered sound and a steady, walking beat drive us
gracefully into the album’s final track, “Heart.” Beginning with a thump
similar to that of the namesake organ, it comes in with soft, golden tones to
lend a tasteful and memorable end to the album. One could even imagine it as
the end credit music for a wonderful cinematic story, complete with soft sunset
shot. More excellent voice work on “Heart” as well.

“Saturdaze” injects a bit of modern sound into retrowave,
and Starcadian has done this more tastefully than imagination itself could
conceive. Both an excellent follow-up to “Sunset Blood” and a majestic work on
its own merit, “Saturdaze” is worth listening to, front to back, beginning to
end.

JORDAN F. – SLIPSTREAM

by Filip Galetic

Jordan F. delights with the latest record that ranks up with the best examples of Outrun Synthwave sub-genre.

Outrun fans will rejoice hearing the steaming fresh new LP by Sydney’s Jordan F. Its quintessential Rosso Corsa sound will feel right at home on your playlist that already has Lazerhawk and Miami Nights 1984 on it.

The record starts with the epic “Abandon Streets” that at the whopping 10 and a half minutes provides a mini journey of its own with flashes of gelled up hair, sleek wet-rain sports cars, neon lipstick and danger.

The track offers plenty of drama, adrenaline soaked sections alternating with quieter bridges, all coated in a rolling arpeggiated bass line.

The second track, “Take Flight” has an uplifting and emotional progression with a cinematic flair.

“Into the Night” is the first stand out track of the album with an infectious fade in and main hook that compares to such Rosso Corsa classics such as Miami Nights 1984 “Saved by the Bell” or Lost Years’ “Storm”. It only loses a bit of momentum in the middle of the track but quickly recovers.

Track nr. 4, starts off softly, aptly to its name “Space Romance”. One minute into the song, and you’re in for a pure synth bliss with a gentle but unrelenting riff carrying you through.

“Nightwave” is the fifth track and it brings back some of the thrill into the album with a heart pounding mix of deep synth bass and undulating lead.

In track nr. 6, we seem to go back into the more romantic territory. The track’s name “Hologram Rose” is a reference to the 1976 short story by William Gibson. The story tells of a man who in a bleak future uses sense-recordings of his ex-lover to be able to fall asleep. I haven’t read it but the track does convey that poignant sensibility this story might possess.

Second stand out track of the album, “So Close” immediately hits you with those haunting reverb-y synths in the background and builds up an aural image of some kind of futuristic intrigue playing out before your eyes.

The album closes by making a full circle: here we have a Part II to the opening track. The sequel takes the motifs from the filmic opener and plays around with them in new ways.

All in all, “Slipstream” delivers that signature Rosso Corsa Records sound in droves and is primarily mandatory listening for the fans of this particular subgenre of synth wave. For those looking for something new and cutting edge, this might not be the best choice but you certainly cannot deny Jordan F.’s ability to come close to the masters with his sound and provide some very striking auditory imagery.

Shirobon’s newest release, “The Arcade Dream,” is certainly both ephemeral and memorable, much like a good dream. Like an in-depth game world awaiting a player’s exploration, there is rich detail here, as well as plenty of excitement.

In The Arcade Dream, we are launched from a killer intro into a blistering track called “Into The Zone” which features some iconic melody lines, vicious square and saw synth, and overall excellent energy for a lead-in. While the types of synth tones are pretty standard here, they are sharply toned and well-used. Sampled vocals only add to the breakdancing, city-night, almost defiant tone of the song.

Both musicians and music fans are familiar with the concept of a “lull” in an album, where a few tracks are obviously filler… Despite my best efforts, I could not find one in Arcade Dream. The entirety of the album keeps you interested, keeps the beats in your ears, and provides enough variety and power to really have some staying power in your rotation.

One track I’d like to highlight is “Renegade,” which evokes images of high-speed cycle chases and lightning-paced peril with its gritty but laser-futuristic melodies. It is characteristic of the album technically as well, with a crisp but rich balance in range and tone. Like the rest of the album, it will definitely have you bobbing your head, too.

“Galactic Freeway” and “Under the Moonlight” provide a mellower, more laid-back offering, while still pulsing with rhythm and physicality. “Fight For You,” the final track, is deceptively gentle to begin with, but if you’re looking for a slow dance, you’re barking up the wrong tree. Even the “slow songs” on Arcade Dream are alive and “kick-your-feet” intense. The second half of the album offers soft intros to songs that are surprisingly upbeat even with their sunglasses-and-palm-trees sound intact. Even the fairly soft “Ralf’s Touch” has the listener imagining action, not simply images.

Perhaps the highlight of the album is the collaboration with Sabrepulse, “Cyberstrike.” We get another of those great spoken intros, followed by a frenetic and pulsing hi-tempo track that you could dance, exercise, or fight sewer mutants to.

All in all, the album is worth your time if you are a fan of the genre (why else would you be here?), and if you can get a signed digipak copy, all the more power to you.
