1.) Cobra Kai

The absolute best thing to come out of our memories and grace us with it’s existence in 2018 is the unexpected television sequel to THE KARATE KID. Cobra Kai is the story of former High school bully Johnny as he hits rock bottom; a somewhat deadbeat father and miserable loser still grinding his teeth about the year when his life’s peak was usurped by Daniel Larusso and that infamous and illegal ‘crane kick’. My review of the series is still up on NewRetroWave.

2.) Devilman Crybaby

The in your face and faithful to its source material anime that brought back hard R-Rated themes and imagery to anime can’t get enough praise for its critque of humanity as we know it and of the relationship between the creatures of whatever you call God’s workings. A monster of a self-contained horror story that goes from Cosmic Horror, Body Horror right on up to social commentary. “MUAH” i could massage this IP’s prostate more but you must see it for yourself. My review is still available on NewRetroWave.com

3.) WACO

Remember when the Federal Government set a building on fire with women and children inside, as the nation watched the compound be reduced to ashes on live television? Remember when the acting attorney general was unapologetic about the incident on CSPAN? Well here is a somewhat television-biopic, similar to the OJ Simpson Trial mini-series that became the rage in TV-land. I would say, give this mini-series a try if you can find it streaming online. Give it a viewing if you be mature enough to look at it objectively. Michael Shannon is always great in any role and Taylor Kitsch is good too. WATCH IT.

4.) The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

If you love the work of the COEN BROS. all through the 80s and 90s then this might be a treat for your NETFLIX X-MAS. Yes, it is a western but, it has all of the best parts of your favorite COEN BROs. films like BLOOD SIMPLE, Raising Arizona, Big Lebowski, A Serious Man, No Country for Old Men, Fargo and more. This anthology is packed with whatever you needed at the time you pressed play on your device. MUST WATCH!

5.) Glow

The hit series returns for a second season of spandex and piledrivers. Revolving around a fictionalization of the characters and gimmicks of the 1980s syndicated women’s professional wrestling circuit, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (or GLOW) founded by David McLane. If you know the mechanics of pro-wrestling then you’d be satiated by its portrayal here. The humor is fun, the whole show is pretty friggin’ fun.

6.) BAKI

Grappler Baki is back with the continuation of the story from a previous series. Baki is a young combat prodigy who’s dedicated his life to perfecting his body and becoming the strongest fighter in the world. A dream that will lead him in striking distance of his father, the worlds most dangerous man. The artwork is similar to what it was in the original manga although a bit too polished in my opinion. But, it’s classic anime with new art and brutal fighting. If it’s still streaming on NETFLIX. WATCH IT.

7.) The Conners

No I’m not talking about the Sarah Connor chronicles (i’d love to see that come back). The favorite show and one time flagship series on ABC is back, sort of. When news broke of the series returning with everyone back, the internet went berserk. The premiere was a smash hit. ROSEANNE was back! But, then the real Roseanne almost screwed the whole thing up. Luckily because of fan support and someone having a set of balls and a good idea, the Roseanne character was killed off and the show repackaged as THE CONNERS. Will it retain the interest of the modern television audience that is now binge viewing on AMAZON, NETFLIX, HULU with some really good quality shows there? We don’t know but time will tell.

8.) Altered Carbon

CYBERPUNK is back. My only fear is “will the common consumer ruin it like it’s doing superheroes?”. Altered Carbon is the cyberpunk detective story set in a future where humanity has found a cure for death with the use of proxy bodies; the user transfers his consciousness into new bodies at the moment of death. Our main character is hired or unthawed to solve the murder of the very person hiring him.. If you love the consistent motifs of cyberpunk and it’s aesthetics then you’ll be delighted to point of oversaturation with this series that is already getting an anime spinoff on Netflix. WATCH IT.

9.) Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Everyone’s favorite daughter from MAD MEN is back and resting comfortably in the shows of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. This version of the adolescent witch is more based on the recent Archie Comics run of the character that is darker, moody and very pro-women. Kiernan Shipka is a young witch who is destined to be a bride of the dark lord but, instead chooses to retain her free will and humanity. A decision that puts her at odds with many dark forces. New style Goth fetish for young girls looking for positive themes.

10.) Haunting of Hill House

I haven’t watched the series all the way through but for some reason my whole facebook feed is filled with associates talking about the series being that scary and creepy and keeping them up at night. The show is headed by Mike Flanagan. Flanagan still riding a wave of critical praise from his previous horror project, ‘Gerald’s Game’ an adaptation of a Stephen King story. Flanagan updates the timeline with flashbacks from the nineteen-ninties instead of the late fifties with the main story line occurring in our present day. Starring: Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton, Henry Thomas and others. Still available for streaming online. MUST WATCH!

Stay Warm and KEEP YOUR FINGERS ON THAT REWIND BUTTON! Merry Christmas, YULE, KWANZAA, Hanukah and bright TREE & GIFTS day. 1

Firstly, I apologise for the wait for this installment of Retro Motors. As it happens I have been shoveling money like coal into a furnace into my 944, which has meant that my life has turned into the cycle of work, sleep, repeat, whilst stealing food like some kind of countryside based Aladdin. Eating badly and spending a lot of time indoors doing sweet FA, reminds me of the carefree time of my youth when I used to watch hours of cartoons on terrestrial and cable TV.

This months Retro Motors looks back at some of the best cartoon vehicles. Again the 80’s and early 90’s were the host to an abundance of all action vehicular combat based cartoons; ranging from the absolutely absurd, to some of the finest animated work to date. Taking a look over what people consider “The best cartoons” today, it’s clear to see that we have moved away from the more classic storytelling and instead opted for balls out, physiologically unsettling and surreal. Back then it was good vs evil, David vs Goliath, man vs machine- or a mix of all three. Not only did the majority of these cartoons tell of a great adventure or explore some primal instincts but they also looked damn cool.

A group I wholeheartedly feel should exist in real life is M.A.S.K (Mobile Armoured Strike Command). If money were no object I’d mobilise a team akin to M.A.S.K and chase ivory poachers with a flying Camaro that shoots rockets. People like Elon Musk think they’re doing the world a favour by producing silent cars and an underground tunnel, but I feel if I was wealthy enough, people would much rather watch a live feed of me in a flying Camaro bombing Japanese whaling boats.

Thunderhawk

No list of the coolest cartoon vehicles could end without mentioning Transformers, although my favourite robot was not only a bad guy but was never a vehicle in the first place. Sound wave, for me, always stood out for the fact he decided to talk through a vocoder and his arsenal consisted of a massive cannon and weaponised cassette tapes.

Yet no other cartoon character made such an impact on me than Optimus Prime. I seem to remember entering a Video Nest here in the UK and choosing a film for Friday night with my dad. From Thundercats to HE MAN, Jason and the Wheeled Warriors to Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles. What could go wrong with a full feature length film about these mighty metal heros? Optimus Prime could go wrong, that’s what.

Optimus Prime

There are some people who still believe that certain human beings, deceased yet period correct, still wander the earth as ghosts. It is believed that certain spectral entities come back with such tasks as moving trinkets, walking without purpose or simply switching on and off the lights. They may be one of the most underwhelming myths of the natural world but the Ghostbusters on the other hand are real and the film is a masterpiece. The Real Ghostbusters was the name of the animated series and what a series it was- exploring further into the characters whilst retaining all the fun and bizarre ghost stories of New York City.

Ecto 1 is a Cadillac- in case you didn’t know. Miller-Meteor, the famous coach builder, designed and manufactured modified versions for businesses who required a classy looking vehicle as big a boat. It had been used as an ambulance-come-hearse in some states of America and became infamous when it starred in the Ghostbusters film. The unforgettable wail of the siren and the bright colour scheme are as iconic as that silver car from Back To The Future.

Ecto 1

The best Batmobile has been and gone when Michael Keaton drove it back in 1989. Long, black, sleek and sexy, complete with mounted guns, turbine and armour plating. Since then the Batmobile has gone from looking like it runs the city, to something that looks like Super-Goth is trying to compensate.

A little later in 1992 Batman the animated series was launched. A beautifully animated, well scripted; timeless, moving comic, also featuring its very own Batmobile. In keeping with the gothic art deco style of the series, the Batmobile of this era is a brutal looking, four wheeled slab of a car. Housing what appears to be a monstrous V12 and with all the essential gadgets like teargas, bullet proof armour and missiles. The dark deco style was inspired by Tim Burton’s work and in my opinion deserves a live action version someday, if only to see the car for real.

The Batmobile

Not exactly a cartoon, more like an animated schizophrenic episode- Akira is an extraordinary masterpiece of technical ability, eccentric storytelling and cult imagery. Any New Retro Wave fan will tell you, the Neo-Tokyo setting is an unnerving mix of real world imagery and sci-fi elements that blend in such a brutal way, it’s going to leave a mark.

My lasting memory of the film however was not the face melting fight sequences but the bike. Kaneda is a young teen with a bad attitude. He’s also the leader of a biker gang who take no shit when it comes to the open road. His chosen chariot is renowned even before you get to see it. Rumour has it this thing was a 200mph, electronically driven sports bike. Whatever it is, it’s one of the coolest animated vehicles to date. Some die hard fans of the franchise have spent thousands creating exact replicas. It has even inspired Honda to create something that closely resembles Shotaro Kaneda’s iron horse.

Kaneda’s bike

These vehicles were at first animated, then became toys and now in some cases would become a reality. I may not be able to have my very own Batmobile but I’ve always thought cars and bikes bring adventure and can become a very real emotional attachment. I hope that even with the decline of fossil fuel burning vehicles, we could see a revival of memorable characters and and equally as memorable vehicular concepts.

Jack returned to us in the form of a mini-series to answer some of the questions left unanswered from the previous series. Animation n story is flawless victory.

8.) Mindhunter

Although at times a drag. The actors playing the specific killers are engaging. And even if you’re bored, it’s Fincher doing what he does best and destroying the romanticism around serial killers that girls on the internet flutter over.

7.) Twin Peaks

Source: Business Insider

I didn’t much like it nor knew what the hell was going on. However, it’s David Lynch doing whatever the hell he wanted and you couldn’t ask for more… Maybe more Audrey?

6.) She’s Gotta Have It

Rarely has a show blown up my phone with people requesting I watch something… I will not spoil it. It’s urban Spike Lee pulp with a lot heart n laughs.

5.) The Deuce

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Filmed in NYC to resemble the drug infested, hooker littered, dirty Times Square of yesterday.. an all star cast, all stars I tell you. Even Francisco is good playing a set of twins.. unapologetic and in your face. Sex, nudity, profanity, violence and dread – it’s New York City baby.

4.) Mike Judge:Tales from the Tour Bus

Source: IndieWire

Imagine the art style of King of the Hill and Beavis & Butthead and the actual behind the scene tales of the great outlaw country music icons: Tammy Wynett, Johnny Paycheck, Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings and George Jones.. I’ve watched it a bunch of times and people think I’m crazy.. but it’s really good.

3.) The Get Down: Season 1 – Part 2

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

1970s South Bronx, directed by the dude who made Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge. I binged this entire unfortunately cancelled series in one sitting with family.. Amazing. Jimmy Smits is dynamite in this series. WATCH IT! Only downside is Jaden Smiths storyline either it was rushed or not but the actors definitely didn’t go for it in that story arc.

2.) Stranger Things: Season 2

Source: Digital Spy

A lot more emotion and levity in this one. Probably because we’ve already fallen in love with the characters. Not much is different same monster just more of them, a new mega monster controlling the upside down. The kids are older and new kids enrolled into the shenanigans. Only episode I’m like ehhhh about is the episode everyone is “eh” about. But the series is going strong into season 3.

1.) The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Source: Paste Magazine

Oh my god this show is so freaking good. It’s on Amazon Prime. Thanks story of a quick witted quirky yet prissy upper westside Jewish woman who one night discovers her husband is leaving her for his younger secretary. After a night of walking in the rain, drinking a bottle of wine, walks into a beat generation era open mic and starts waxing poetic about her life in hilarious earnest and befriends an amateur talent agent and the almighty Lenny Bruce. 1960s NYC in full pastel and pencil skirt glory. The music is outstanding with some cuts from the Go Go’s and others thrown in at closing credits. You like comedy, you like family drama with a hint of levity. WATCH THIS SHOW.

10.) Temple [A Cyberpunk Thriller]

Temple is directed by Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, the talent director of The Akira Project. Set in the near future, a disease is causing organ rejection in humans. One man must fight to secure cybernetic enhancements to save the life of another. The fights are literal –he has to steal the body parts from others. TEMPLE is the directors first long form project, based on everything he loves; dystopian sci-fi, cyborgs and martial arts with a touch of manga thrown in for good measure. Nguyen is using interest and hype surrounding this short to produce a feature length version of Temple. Definitely worth your time if you’re a fan of Cyberpunk, Blade Runner, StrangeDays, Deus Ex and other I.P.’s.

(also known as Godzilla Resurgence) is a 2016 Japanese science fiction kaiju film featuring Godzilla, produced and distributed by Toho. It is the 31st film in the Godzilla franchise, the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho, and Toho’s third reboot of the franchise. The film is co-directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Gamera), with a screenplayby Anno and visual effects by Higuchi. As expected the film was released in Japan to critical acclaim however, fell below the radar here in the west to mixed reviews by mouth breathing Americans who expected something like those superhero and braindead action films being churned out by Hollywood. Summery – Godzilla is the product of nuclear waste in the ocean. 2.) Godzilla absorbs all organic matter i.e. Godzilla he/she can devour human beings. 3.) Pretty fire shooting out its mouth. A near perfect reimagining of the legendary Kaiju.

Fuller House is an American family sitcom and sequel to the 1987–95 television series Full House, airing as a Netflix original series. The series centers on D.J. Tanner-Fuller, a veterinarian and widowed mother of three sons, whose sister and best friend—the mother to a teenage daughter—provide support in her sons’ up bringings by moving in with her. Fuller House has received generally unfavorable reviews from television critics. Most of the original series ensemble cast has reprised their roles on Fuller House, either as regular cast members or in guest appearances, with the exception of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who alternated in the role of Michelle Tanner on Full House. On December 24, 2016, the series was renewed for a third season that will be released in 2017.

The first season premiered on Netflix on June 10, 2016 and consisted of 11 episodes. The lions are back. A second season will premiere on Netflix on January 20, 2017.

The perfect bridge between season 2 and the highly anticipated new season of David Lynch’s cult-classic series, The Secret History of Twin Peaks arrived this year to remind us of all the stranger phenomenon and moods of the mysterious Northwest community. A Dossier Style Novel written by series co-creator Mark Frost. Structured as a secret dossier assembled by a mysterious “archivist” and annotated by an FBI agent known only as TP, this enigmatic collection includes undiscovered Lewis and Clark diary entries, UFO sightings, and personal journals of Twin Peaks residents, some of which answer unresolved plotlines from the show’s second season. The presentation of the book is very well thought out and should be the perfect companion to your Twin Peaks book collection that should consist of The Autobiography of Agent Dale Cooper and The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer. And if that doesn’t satiate your appetite for coffee and pie, then you can watch both seasons of Twin Peaks on Showtime’s on demand menu. The Red Room waits.

3.) The Nice Guys –

Another one of my top 5 films for the year is The Nice Guys. Although it is seta decade earlier in the 70’s, I have to admit the attention to detail and setting really needs to be acknowledged. I actually felt like I was watching a modern movie that was filmed in the 1970’s. Russel Crowe hasn’t been this good in awhile and Ryan Gosling is just as on point with his balancing act between comedy and drama. The both of them playing off each other like some kind of pulp fiction Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The soundtrack is Killer. The NiceGuys was directed and co-written by Shane Black who penned: Leathal Weapon(1,2),The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, The Long KissGoodnight as well wrote and directed: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, and the upcoming Predator sequel. This movie is that good – watch it.

2.) Seoul Searching –

This teen comedy set in 1988 and directed by Benson Lee, deserves to be in my top 5. Seoul Searching is an 80’s teen comedy in the same vein as Porky’s or Fraternity Vacation but, rich with relationships and coming of age drama instead of gratuitous nudity and dick jokes. With an amazing cast of young actors and a fantastic soundtrack. This movie will make you emotional, it’ll make you laughand make you actually feel really good at the end. Starring: Justin Chon, JessikaVan, Esteban Ahn, Teo Yoo, Cha In-pyo, Rosalina Leigh and more. Enjoy it as soon as you can.

  1.) Stranger Things –

The Netflix series that seduced the entire country with nostalgic settings, music, clichés and the timeless concept of young people going on adventures and discovering the dark secrets of the real world and the dangers of reality and beyond. A rich cast of young talent and supporting roles filled by 80’s actors such as Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine; both back on their game and rounding out this beautiful show. The music is sprinkled and haunted with influences by John Carpenter and some Tangerine Dream. Season 2 was announced during the summer and millions of people are counting the days to find out what happens next in Stranger Things.

The primary reason that some critics are responding so negatively to Fuller House is that they simply don’t remember how bad Full House was 98% of the time. The former TGIF slotted sitcom was a cultural phenomenon, almost more from reruns than original airings, but it was never the show to push the envelope in terms of television comedy. It didn’t smash convention and test boundaries like Seinfeld. It didn’t codify the misadventures of a bunch of angsty white twentysomethings like Friends. There was no universally likable lead like Will Smith who would go on to dominate film screens, and the show was never going to be as smart as Frasier.

In all fairness, Full House never wanted to be what any of those shows became. It was a show content and secure in itself. It may have had a generic shtick, but it was a consistently delivered shtick. While 98% of Full House was admittedly not that good, neither was 99% of the non-notable sitcoms of the same time period. Full House is a show that is fundamentally about family and stability, and the appeal it still holds is largely based on this longing and nostalgia. What could exemplify this better than a show that never tried, nor pretended, to be something more than what it was? While Boy Meets World has had a reboot of its own, it was a show that had too much ambition to be the gosh-shucks-violin-hug that Full House has become in the American zeitgeist.

Anybody criticizing Fuller House (by the way, that title has enough plays on words to be airing on USA, right after Suits) for being predictable in terms of plots and jokes is clearly remember the original through rose-tinted glasses and not paying attention to literally the first line of the theme song (delightfully covered for the new series by Carly Rae Jepsen). Whatever happened to predictability? Well, Full House lived by it, and now Fuller House is tapping your shoulder to show you that it can live by it too.

No seriously. If Fuller House could physically touch you on the arm it would. As much as Full House new what it was artistically, Fuller House knows what it is in terms of being a product. It knows that it is cashing in on its own nostalgia. It is well aware of the idea of catchphrases, relying primarily on resurrecting and recontextualizing old ones. That’s what makes it postmodern, and I mean genuinely postmodern. The hipster counterculture of post-2010 has utterly ruined the word “meta”, and in doing so has trivialized the concept of something being postmodern. Fuller House is not a postmodern sitcom simply because it addresses that the characters are actors playing roles (highlighted most brilliantly with a few Olsen twin jokes and a blink-and-you-miss-it about the meaning of “You Oughta Know”), it is a postmodern sitcom because it plays the notion of a late 80’s / early 90’s sitcom completely straight, while fixing that against a world and toward an audience that has aged 25 years. The juxtaposition of an archaic structure on a modern world, being deliberately addressed to a modern audience, and being aware that the structure is archaic while with an uneasy balancing act between idealism and cynicism, all while understanding that this is a product based on nostalgia is what truly gives Fuller House its postmodern edge.

The show is far from faultless. Some of the jokes should not have made the final draft of these scripts. A few of the returning actors are clearly going through the motions and collecting a check, and Becky as a character has been mostly ruined. Also, when are the Tanner’s going to start being decent to Kimmy? The jokes at Kimmy’s expense tend to fall flat, and while her husband is a funny character, there never quite seems to be resolution to the fact that he has cheated on his wife multiple times. It creates an odd bit of cognitive dissonance when the show seems to want her to forgive him. There’s also an egregiously cringey moment of cultural appropriation (Indian-themed retirement party complete with a sacred cow). It’s more than a misstep. It’s watching somebody fall on their face.

As far as performances go, Andrea Barber is the real MVP here. She’s able to at once capture the essence of Kimmy from the original show while also showing how that character can be an insightful business owner. Jodie Sweetin’s Stephanie, being a younger character than D.J. and Kimmy, was more or less a blank slate for the writers to work with. Ultimately, they took her character a direction that works. There’s a scene in the pilot where Joey is paired with Kimmy, Jesse with Stephanie, and Danny with D.J. It’s a rather quick sequence of events, but it provides the audience with an understanding that those archetypes have been passed to these women. The child actors are harmless for the most part. Jackson, the oldest of D.J.’s brood, and Ramona, Gibbler spawn, can get annoying in their Disney channel-esque level of histrionics, but Max, played by Elias Harger, saves it by being the funniest part of any scene he is in. D.J.’s competing love interests are also highlights of the show. The way that they display such a level of respect to both D.J. and each other is refreshing. The show could have made a weird macho thing out of it, but these are professional adults in their mid-to-late-thirties. They handle it well.

It becomes pretty clear early on that John Stamos served as a producer to the series. I think this was a misstep that tends to hurt television shows. When an actor is the writer’s boss, and not just coworker, things can get complicated. Some of his lines feel like either re-writes by someone who is not a writer or like they were written by someone carefully trying to not offend a superior. Stamos’ character And I swear, if I hear “have mercy” one more time I’m going to cancel my Netflix subscription. I would like to see less Uncle Jesse in the second season. The show would benefit from it, not necessarily because his character is irritating, but the way the writers are forced to handle him is.

Fuller House is an old sitcom that was made in 2016. If you forget that, you will hate it. It is also not for children in the way that the original was, though I’m not certain why you would assume that. It’s worth at least a watch, but you made need to refresh yourself with an episode of Full House to remind yourself that it really didn’t have much to work with.

You see way back in the day, we had day dreams and fantasies about what the future would be: Flying cars, instant food, hover boards, virtual reality, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, mega-corporations seizing gigantic shares of the private sector, possible World War, Panzer Police, Bōsōzoku Gangs, battle drones, advanced medical technology and dystopian cities; “High Tech and Low Life”.

The dystopian urban environments of the nineteen eighties mutated our expectations for the future, a stark contrast to the sundrenched optimism of the nineteen fifties. Instead of blue skies and robotic maids, it was grey mornings of smog and pollution, rising tides and congested cities collaged with multi-culturalism. Much of what we have now was envisioned however, reality is more streamlined than fantasy. Fantasy was gritty and dark and noir. Analog screens and cables scattered all over the place. Information is god and exchanged over vast distances via satellite dishes and worth more than currency. People living longer and resources dwindling; it’s the time of genetically modified food and designer body mods. Any wish you will and it can be yours.

Cyberpunk: “a subgenre of science fiction in a future setting, noted for its focus on “high tech and low life” aspects of society. It features advanced technology and science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order. Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among artificial intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a future Earth, rather than the far-future settings or galactic vistas found in novels such as Isaac Asimov’s Foundation or Frank Herbert’s Dune. The settings are usually post-industrial dystopias but tend to be marked by extraordinary cultural ferment and the use of technology in ways never anticipated by its creators (“the street finds its own uses for things”). Much of the genre’s atmosphere echoes film noir, and written works in the genre often use techniques from detective fiction.” – Wikipedia

Corporations are dictating political tug of wars. Natural resources are being privatized and sold back at record high prices. Cities of industry like Detroit are collapsing under the weight of the new century’s burdens. Urban areas are becoming overcrowded and homogenized with trend and swag cultures. Rural areas are becoming obsolete in the eyes of the average consuming American who chooses to step up the ladder and live in ratholes and work jobs they don’t like to buy things they don’t need in a new habitat they resent but, need to have status – “Choose Life.
Blade Runner is the 1982 Neo-Noir Cyberpunk film directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. The screenplay, written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, is a modified film adaptation of the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner follows the parallel stories of a blade runner being forced out of retirement to hunt down three replicants (life like androids) who have escaped a mining colony and follows the surviving replicants as they desperately try to find a way to prolong their dwindling life spans by tracing their creation back to the source at the Tyrell Corporation; Leading to the emotional crescendo of an ending. The soundtrack was composed by Vangelis and stands the test of time in visual effects and significance in film history. It’s better than Star Wars.

Split Second is a 1992 British science fiction film starring Rutger Hauer, Kim Cattrall, and Neil Duncan. The film is directed by Tony Maylam and Ian Sharp. In the year 2008, heavy rainfall has flooded large areas of London. Rookie police officer Dick Durkin (Duncan) is assigned to partner Harley Stone (Hauer), a burnt-out and highly cynical homicide detective who, according to his commanding officer, survives on “anxiety, coffee and chocolate” after being unable to prevent the murder of his partner by a serial killer several years previously. Now however, the murders have begun again and Stone and Durkin are assigned the case. Part Alien, part Blade Runner, part Hardware and a smidge of Manhunter are all rolled up into this film. Highly underrated with a limited theatrical release in the states.

Do you remember this gem? Does anyone remember this short lived series based on the Wes Craven horror franchise? Well I do. And it was awesome.

Freddy’s Nightmares: A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Series was an anthology series featuring different individual stories; each episode being a two-tier story, with the second half focusing on a character that played a minor role in the previous role. The show’s host and sometimes episodic antagonist was Freddy Krueger. He’d appear like other horror anthology hosts, supplying short monologues, puns and hints at the night’s story.

The pilot episode was directed by Tobe Hooper, and begins with Freddy Krueger’s prosecution on child-murdering charges ending in a mistrial due to the discovery that his arresting officer did not read Freddy his Miranda rights. A mob of parents eventually corners Freddy in a boiler room (his workplace), leading to him being torched by the police officer, dying and gaining his familiar visage.

It’s about three in the morning here in the time capsule. After a few medicated hours picking at my flux capacitor, I began to notice that feeling start to creep into my room as the light bulbs flickered and dimmed out – the beginning of a trip down memory lane.

Like a scene in a proto-cyberpunk film where the android replicant spends time humming, whistlin’ and singing catchy theme songs from his creators youth, of a time that was thought to be but now seen as a retro-future of the past, I chanted and repeated key lyrics and tapped my feet. Now I am recording this onto the retro mixtape of my mind, before some omnipresent director hacks it away and leaves it on the cutting room floor of time… This is the only record of that playlist; played in no particular order with commentary.

*if your song has not been listed please don’t panic.

I was never really into the main opening theme of Miami Vice. The featured music during each episode actually served the show better. The pilot episodes sequence with “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins is probably one of the best moments in television if you ask me. But tonight I am going with Crockett’s Theme that first appeared in the episode “Calderone’s Return: part 1- The Hit List” and composed by Jan Hammer.

3.) The Equalizer (1985-1989):

No not the Denzel Washington film. And for the record, what was that? If you needed a feature film adaptation of a popular 80’s crime series with a Black protagonist, why didn’t they just produce a film based around Hawk from “Spencer for Hire”? Hawk had a spin-off series and its star Avery Brooks was badass enough to lead “Deep Space 9”.

Regardless, The opening sequence of this gritty NYC series always started with images of dark streets, graffiti littered subways, women being stalked by killers or worse. Building up with tension (fear, danger) until finally the music kicks in and the silhouette of the Equalizer steps from the darkness to deal his prescription for street justice. The main theme was composed/performed by Stuart Copeland of The Police.

4.) 21 Jump Street (1987-1991):

What’s 21 Jump Street, you say?

“Where Richard Grieco and Johnny Depp got their start. Come on. Where you been?”

– Rupert, Rules of Attraction.

Theme song performed by Holly Robinson with backing vocals by Johnny Depp and Peter Deluise.

5.) Alice (1976-1985):

I don’t remember ever watching this show or know about it, other than it’s based on the film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”. The show starred Linda Lavine, who also sang the damn theme and I can’t stop the urge to sing parts of this tune in the same kind of affected smokey bravado you’d find at an after hour piano bar off the Atlantic City boardwalk. For a better example of my fixation with this song just go google Opie & Anthony ‘Alice Theme’ and you can hear those poor bastards experience what I’m going through with this song.

6.) Barney Miller (1975-1982):

You knew you were past your bedtime when two things came on, The opening to “TAXI” by Bob James, or the Barney Miller theme by Jack Elliott with Allyn Ferguson and performed in studio by Chuck Berghofer. Played over a shot of the New York Skyline as would have been seen from the water of Upper New York Bay with a garbage barge being towed in the foreground of Lower Manhattan. It’s the type of music the average Joe Coffee would play as he started his backbreaking day eating a butter roll with his cafe’ con leche inside his 1971′ Chevy Caprice.

7.) Misfits of Science (1985-1986):

Way before the 2009’s BBC series “Misfits” , about a motley crew of teenage superpowered heroes. NBC premiered their own short lived series about superhero teens called “The Misfits of Science” with a double-length pilot and only 15 additional episodes and soon cancelled due to low ratings. It was the 80s equivalent to NBCs Heroes; in fact the creator of Heroes wrote on this show. Also co-starred a young Courteney Cox. As for the theme music, C’mon listen to it. It’s here for a reason.

8.) Family Ties (1982-1989):

Why? Because I once knew every word of this song; I have friends who know the song; I’ve been in the vicinity of people who know this song; it’s even being played at a wedding somewhere right now. It’s a nice and sentimental piece like the Moonlighting theme or Who’s the Boss. Composed by Jeff Barry and Tom Scott. Performed by Deniece Williams and Johnny Mathis, except for the first ten episodes when it was performed by Dennis Tufano and Mindy Sterling. Sing it you’ll like it. “Sha la la la”.

9.) Gimmie A Break (1981-1987):

If there is a song that you want to play whenever someone annoying starts the monologue for the unloved, or tells it from the gut about being shortchanged, this is it. Before they can utter a second sentence just start singing the first bars – “Gimme a break I sure deserve it/ It’s time I made it to the top.Gimme a break I’m looking forward-“; They will leave you alone by the time you get to the chorus. Composed by Jay Graydon and performed by Nell Carter.

10.) RED DWARF (1988-1993):

The British series about the last known human being alive and a hologram traveling through space accompanied by an evolved humanoid cat named, well “Cat” and a service mechanoid, “kryten”. Theme and incidental music were written and performed by Howard Goodall, with the distinctive vocals on the closing theme by Jenna Russell. Its catchy and reminds me of Christmas. It really does. It does.

11.) Are You Being Served (1972-1985):

No mall I have ever been present in has felt like Grace Brothers. “Ground floor: perfumery, stationery, and leather goods, wigs and haberdashery, kitchenware and food. Going up… First Floor: Telephones, gents ready made suits, shirts, suits, ties, hats, underwear, and shoes. Going up…”and so and so forth. 1980’s MACY’s came close but I never saw Mr. Humphries or Mrs. Slocombe’s pussy(cat). But one can dream.

12.) Unsolved Mysteries (1987-2002):

The documentary style series featuring re-enactments of unsolved crimes, missing persons, conspiracy theories and unexplained phenomena. It scared you more than “America’s Most Wanted” and inspired imitators like the more paranormal themed “Sightings” or the Investigation Discovery Channel. Robert Stack always wearing his trenchcoat and haunting some dark alley as he reminded you every episode that a murderer could be next door to you. This will be the song that puts me to sleep this morning.

13.) THE HITCHHIKER (1983-1987):

And finally, one of my favorites. The theme to HBO’s The Hitchhiker. It’s one of my favorite opening sequences ever, much like “The Prisoner”. #13 on this list is a potential candidate for a future Remember This… The title music is gloriously ominous, dark and vacant. It conjures images of rattlesnakes, deserts and haunted landscapes. Composed by Michael Rubini who also collaborated on the film score to The Hunger and composed Graham’s Theme for Michael Mann’s film Manhunter. He also co-scored two episodes of Tales From the Crypt.

It’s time for the sleepless to get some sleep. But in the meantime keep your fingers firmly positioned on that rewind button.

was before the internet and chances are if you never saw it then you might
never get the chance. Remember feeling curious on those days your parents
weren’t home and you started rummaging through their personal drawers and
closets? Didn’t you feel like Indiana Jones? The fixed cable box if you had one
never quite worked after a while and all you had was that fuzzy scrambled
signal and the hint of nudity just behind the static line. Sometimes you had
friends and when you had them, you might even trade tapes and watch them with
the sound off. Those were the days, the days when biological functions were
both science fiction and a circus sideshow. You had them unmarked, or scratched
in some way, so you could recognize them. They were hidden behind your drawer,
in your closet, inside a shoe box or in the garage. If you didn’t want to watch
a scene you had to sit there and fast forward or rewind. Two hour tapes became
six hour tapes and so one. Scenes were cut and paste together like a William
Burroughs production; fake tits and cocaine pricks that were only overshadowed
by the wooden acting and Aqua Net hair. Those weren’t skeletons in your closet;
they were the stains of youth after dark.

         Remember
Public Access television? Before podcasts or whatever the new thing is nowadays we
had a set of channels (free channels) on our televisions where anyone could get
a half or an hour long show on the rotation. It didn’t matter if you had talent or
not because we all know most Americans don’t. Anything you could imagine was on
it and people took advantage of it with ease. Because you favorite custom VHS
tapes were in a way a microcosm of what Public Access was (some cases still
is). It was low budget but entertaining. While your family watched Dallas, you
were watching random insanity and self-exploitation. And it was beautiful as it
happened.

Here are some examples
of the insanity I am talking about. I am going to make you
experience the thinking process and patterns of a tape head… an insomniac tape
head. I’m going to take you on a journey through my mind and my youth. You’ll
recognize some of the places and some of the things but in here they are sexy
