The one and only synth wizard FM-84 is touring the United Sates right now! After reaching our number 1 spot on our top albums of the year in 2016 with the debut album “Atlas” and playing SXSW last spring, FM-84 is now touring – and spots are starting to sell out!

FM-84’s music, according to one review “transcends nostalgia into a modern masterpiece.” This series of shows is sure to be some of the best we’ll see all summer in the retrowave genre – I’ve got my ticket’s already – do you?

Check out Dance With The Dead’s new album, “Loved to Death” here!

Cold air from entrance door bites at the back of my neck and soon dissipates as I ascend a short staircase to the main floor of the “Big Room Bar.” The brewery-district venue has a partnership with the local alternative station, CD102.5, but it’s the first time I’ve attended a show here. The “Big Room Bar” is, in fact, deceptively big – but that’s hard to discern with so many bodies packed in so tight. The show hasn’t yet begun, and already the main room is nearing at least 75% capacity.

The attendance is a great surprise for a Wednesday night synth-metal show. Ohio is often overlooked by artists on tour and I’m pleased to see the number of fans here showing their support. One lone bartender furiously works the bar – the poor bastard – it’s clear that not even the venue was expecting such a turnout.

Of course, they’ve never dealt with Dance With The Dead or Daniel Deluxe.

I meet with the tour manager and step into the green room to meet Justin and Tony of DWTD and Daniel of Daniel Deluxe. Their mood is very relaxed as they sip on a few beers, readying for the show. Tony looks up, guitar in hand, and introduces himself. While we chat he continues to practice almost subconsciously – not unlike Skwisgaar from Metalocalypse. I begin our small interview before the show.

How has the tour has been so far?

“It’s been awesome man – it’s been great. We’re at the halfway point right now,” says Tony. Justin nods and pipes up, “I feel like our tours always go by pretty fast.”

Tony relates that it’s Daniels first time to the states. I ask him how he’s liked it so far and he gives it a good to mixed review.

“So far,” Daniel says with a laugh, “the most surprising thing was how cheap our sodas are!”

So, you’ve been touring a new album, “Loved to Death,” How do you feel about the reception of the new album?

“It’s the most energetic records we’ve put out and written, one of the hardest. We’re really proud of it. Sometimes we can pump out songs pretty fast, but with this one we took our time and dissected every part of the song until we got what we thought was perfection. We’re stoked on it, we’re touring for it – and so far we’ve had great feedback!”

“Loved to Death” is one of your most intense albums so far – how was your production different between this album and your previous?

“We put in a lot of time for this record. We wanted to make sure the record slammed into fifth gear and took the listener on a journey.”

Do you plan on getting heavier over time? What’s next in the Dance with the Dead sound?

“We’re not sure yet… but we’re always exploring for new inspiration so we shall see!”

The synthwave and darksynth scenes have been steadily growing over the past few years – do you think the genres are getting to big for their own boots, or do you think it still has room to grow?

“I think there’s still room to grow and it should be interesting to see where it’s at in the next year or so.”

How has the tour been so far? What are you favorite highlights or conversely, some of the more difficult moments?

“Tour has been great so far. Some of the highlights are playing places we’ve never been to and meeting and making new fans. Difficulty’s would be dealing with Van and trailer issues. Those are never fun…”

(After the show) How did you like the Columbus crowd?

“We didn’t know what to expect since it was our first time but the crowd and energy was great! Looking forward to coming back.”

I notice Daniel has exited behind me to start the show, so I thank them for their time and make my exit to take some photos.

Daniel Deluxe puts on one hell of a show. He mixes his tracks together in a deft manner – subtly changing the tracks to amazing effect. His darksynth sound is deep and raw enough to get even the metal heads in the audience head banging.

Too soon, his set is over – and Dance With The Dead takes the stage. As they do so some curtains are lifted, revealing two massive skulls that blast neon green light into the audience. The crowd rushes forward and soon it becomes difficult to get photos with the erratic mix of head banging and dancing going on. They absolutely tear up their sound – hitting every note with an expert flourish. Often they switch between keyboard and guitar.

I had specifically chosen not to listen to their new album beforehand, and I’m greatly surprised by the evolution of their sound into heavier, darker territory. Vocal stabs from horror movies punctuate the end of tracks, and as soon as it began the show is over. The audience screams for an encore before they’ve left the stage – and they return quickly with three full final tracks.

Australian retroheads brace yourselves! It’s time to clip on your fluorescent fanny packs and dig up your flashy neon windbreakers, for you’ve got some funky synth waves washing over your sunny shores this November. Ross Trinkhaus, better known as Phaserland from Detroit, will be making a trip to Australia, hitting venues in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne on his mission to preach the synth Gospel to fans across the country. His arsenal? Twinkling, glossy 80s’ pop sounds set to funky beats and ripper guitar licks. Fans, it’s time to lace your dancing shoes on tight. For those unfamiliar, fear not! We at NewRetroWave have got you covered. We caught up with Phaserland for a formal introduction to get you up to speed with the man behind the music, in time to catch up with his upcoming dates as well as his upcoming EP release.

First off, let’s talk about your musical background. What music did you grow up listening to?

When I was really little, my dad used to put on Middle English Folk music and John Coltrane, but after I picked up the guitar I got really drawn into bands like Rush, Depeche mode, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Various Hair Bands and YES. Also That Mall jam scene in the movie Vice-Versa changed my life

What first got you interested in Synthwave?

After playing in Rock bands my whole life, I decided to start a music project I could create entirely on my own. In 2013 I learned how to use Addictive Drums, and I started to experiment with the “Reel Machines” plug-in. I was hooked with the modern 80s tones I could get from the Simmons and Linn drum kits. Simultaneously I stumbled upon Tesla Boy’s track ‘Spirit of the night’ and Mitch Murder’s Glass Cities EP. From there, I was able to follow the SoundCloud rabbit hole. Those two first artists lit a fire to pursue the Genre, and I never looked back since. I figured I could use my band background to form complete songs with all the instruments I always heard in my head. No band member could tell me something sounded too 80s! It was, and still is refreshing

What is it that first drew you towards a retro-themed aesthetic as opposed to a more modern strain of electronic/synth music?

All in all, I would say it would have to be the melodies and instruments of the retro era that pull me in. The 80s had some really talented cats playing everywhere. Melody is one of the most important aspect of music for me so I naturally lean towards a decade that embraced that polished layered tone. Newer electronic music is still great, but I feel the emphasis is more on heavy rhythms and build ups for dancing. I was just out at a club in Detroit this weekend, and I was appreciating all the LOW bass and build ups. I can see the appeal of the physical response, but I don’t feel the heart and cerebral resonance like I do with Synthwave and retro themed music. Now… For my live shows, if you can combine the two, even better

You’re currently preparing for an Australian Tour. What can you tell us about your relationship with Australia and the Australian music scene?

It’s all so new! I have been friends with the great Marko Maric who ran the Synthetix Sunday podcast for years, and I have been Sharing music and chatting with the likes of Rick Shithouse, Dream Fiend, Killstar, Ben Businovski, and other great Australian Acts. I look forward to playing with Ben in Perth, as well as Kopano, Eddie Electric, Indighost, Marko and Amnesia. In Melbourne I get to share the stage with Fellow Rosso Corsa member Jordan F, as well as Vast Hill. Those 2 tag along with me to Sydney, as well as Tessel and Emulate. So much great music to look forward too

What have you been into lately, music-wise and gear-wise?

I have been really digging my new Komplete Kontrol S49. It’s a midi Keyboard with real time parameter knobs that make it easier than ever to change filters and Arps on the fly. It has this crazy one note setting for delicious 7th and 9th chords that can really inspire. For my listening pleasure, I have been listening to some fabulous late 70s/ early 80s library music from Bruton. Those session musicians were throwing out some serious creative rainbow juice… and Getting paid!

What is next after this tour? When can we expect more music under the Phaserland name?

I will be having a track on the HBO series Vice Principals this October and I am almost done with a brand new EP. I plan to debut new material live in Australia first, then the new EP Flip the Switch will drop sometime in late November or early December. I have also partnered with a local Barcade in the city to set up a reoccurring live act every month or 2. That is going to be fantastic and full of surprises. I also have been working with a local female vocalist as well. Oh yeah, also a Music Video is on the way!

Name one of your favourite and least favourite things about the 80s’.

The general sense of optimism, all the beautiful hand drawn cartoons for kids, all the fun makeup and special efx in movies, MUSIC obviously, and the fashions.

Least fav – the AIDS epidemic

Describe your dream musical project.

Honestly, the fact that I can keep making Art, and have fans around the world listen with support is a dream to me. Also If I had a track with Mitch Murder that would be pretty sweet too!

Finishing off with my trademark closing question: name one of your favorite albums, movies and books.

This is HARD. Ok. Pat Metheny’s White album from 77′, Blade runner (Overboard a close 2nd) and 1984 by George Orwell

Be sure to catch Phaserland on his Australian dates (Nov 11 – Perth, Tetsuo NC; Nov 16 – Sydney, Factory Theatre; Nov 17 – Melbourne, Rubix Warehouse), and keep an eye out for his upcoming EP Flip the Switch (due for a late November/ early December release).
