British singer/songwriter Ollie Wride announces his US solo debut at West Hollywood’s legendary Troubadour, having last sold out the venue as frontman with FM-84. He has penned some of synthwave’s most popular tracks including “Running in The Night”,  “Never Stop” and “Stranger Love”, while his live performances are known to be both exhilarating and captivating.

Following the success of these collaborations, it provided Wride the opportunity to further explore his melodic sensibilities, fusing elements of alternative rock with the nostalgic hallmarks of synth pop, culminating in the release of his debut solo album “Thanks In Advance”. The debut released on NewRetroWave Records is widely praised and charted on Billboard’s Top 10 Electronic charts as well as No.1 on iTunes’ Electronic chart.

With production completed on his highly anticipated second album and signing to M3 Recordings (Matt Pinfield, Matt Malpass and Matt Holmes), expect adrenaline-filled live band performances of songs from his debut and FM-84 back catalogue along with new upcoming releases.

Though the young producer wears his influences on his sleeve, the record delivers an impressive, action-packed experience with a lot of youthful charm and passion.

Having concluded our review of Flight of Fancy with hopes of future releases, we couldn’t be happier to find our pleas answered in the form of a shiny new track to lead Shades of Thunder into 2022.

‘I Can’t Get Enough’ is a night cruising outrun track that is sure to send your car stereo system shuddering. Be sure to keep your seatbelt fastened, hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. You’re in for a wild ride.

The song has an ambivalent meaning. On the one hand, consuming media or indulging in a popular pastime can be emotionally satisfying for the moment, but not in the long run. On the other hand, the desire for more can also become an addiction and a bottomless pit and therefore it is important to keep a balance and contemplatively explore the actual basis for happiness in order to maintain a healthy approach to consumption. We also can’t get enough of creating music and realising our vision. Musically, we have implemented this idea by having a robotic voice mantra-like repeat the song title as the essence of consumerism. The gloomy mood almost seems to take a positive turn, but then dissolves into a longing for more without being resolved.’

Whereas 2021’s ‘Face in a Frame’ reeled us in with its blissful melancholic sounds, ‘Brighton’ keeps us immersed in a deeply intimate mood, where dreampunk-like soundscapes meet heartwrenching hooks. William Ryan Key seems to have embraced a neon-shaded aesthetic, melding synthpop sounds with a lo-fi ambient touch to create a truly distinct sound print of his own, and we can hardly wait to hear what the rest of the record has in store for us.

Formed earlier in the year, Shades of Thunder is a power-duo comprised of Viennese producers Powernerd and Edictum, whose combined forces are set to rock the scene with their funky retro-futuristic grooves and catchy synth leads. Flight of Fancy is a retrofuturistic thrillride packed to the brim with the stuff retro dreams are made of, complete with a shiny cast of guests.

Beside British House vocalist Jan Johnston and legendary Ghibli theme song singer Azumi Inoue, the debut album completes the all-star cast with scene veteran and fellow collaborator Dana Jean Phoenix on ‘Breaking Glass’. Overall, the album twinkles and pulsates smoothly all throughout its ten tracks, effortlessly weaving between outrun cruising jams, bittersweet power ballads and even a bit of future funk grooves.

Spoilt as we have been with the half-dozen singles that dropped ahead of the album release, one does end up yearning for more new tracks. However, their recent post-album single drop ‘Darkness Falls’ comes as quite an encouraging sign that the boys will be back with more before we know it.

As the tastefully tacky cover depicting a Delorean flying across a pink palm-paved skyline suggests, ‘They Don’t Care About you’ is a dreamy ballad with a generous amount of cheese baked into its Rnb core.

Furthermore, a third track titled ‘Out of Frame’ has recently been announced and is due to premiere on October 21st on Youtube.

Whether these singles will eventually be assembled into an upcoming EP or Full-Length collab album, we don’t yet know, though we’d certainly be excited to hear both tracks come together in an equally varied, longer release!
