StarCadian – “Saturdaze” (AMAZING!)

Starcadian’s new album, “Saturdaze,” is an homage to
Saturday morning TV, but that’s just where this collection of music begins.
This album’s intensity is not to be trifled with! The beats kick and run free;
these are all songs you could tear up a dance floor to. The real gem, however,
is the layers of instrumentation and FX. The whole album lifts you up, with
never a dull moment. “Saturdaze” keeps you on the plateau.

“Ultralove” launches us forward at a decent pace, only for
“Dance Or Die” to throw us into breakneck speeds. The beats kill, compelling
you to move your body. There is no escape; the drums hit you and it’s
unstoppable. The high end is nice and clean, with a gleaming and surprisingly
modern edge to the instrumentation that doesn’t shave anything off the retro
feel. “Money” is a darker, mid-paced track that nonetheless builds well and
creates its own excitement. More crisp synth and sampling, with a lot of great
vocoder work. Things pick up again, and
heavily so, with “Alien Victory,” a superb track and possibly my favorite on
the album. It is full of energy and triumph, and again compels you to tap your
foot (or more, if you’re not sitting down at a keyboard). Midway through, it
explodes into a wordless anthem, a victory march without words. It is truly
exceptional, full of heart. “Entoptica” cools us back down, but trust me, there
is nothing boring here. Rich, layered sound and a steady, walking beat drive us
gracefully into the album’s final track, “Heart.” Beginning with a thump
similar to that of the namesake organ, it comes in with soft, golden tones to
lend a tasteful and memorable end to the album. One could even imagine it as
the end credit music for a wonderful cinematic story, complete with soft sunset
shot. More excellent voice work on “Heart” as well.

“Saturdaze” injects a bit of modern sound into retrowave,
and Starcadian has done this more tastefully than imagination itself could
conceive. Both an excellent follow-up to “Sunset Blood” and a majestic work on
its own merit, “Saturdaze” is worth listening to, front to back, beginning to
end.

Near Dark by Dance with the Dead

Having already released an album in March, music duo “Dance with the Dead” are back again with another work of retro music art that we have all come to know as “Near Dark.” Fans of the previous two albums (Out of Body, Into the Abyss) will not be let down as this album will take you on another powerful and melodic roller coaster ride (one with an undead theme of course).

The first five tracks are a work of non-stop energy that is put together in a perfect order. The opening song “Invader” sounds like it is giving you a preview of what you are about to experience on this album. Kind of like those appetizer samplers you can get at Applebees only instead of mozzarella sticks, quesadillas and chips you’re getting synth hooks, powerful drums, and guitar shredding. The song “Waves” might be the best song on this album as it has a catchy hook and a drum track that you will never get out of your head similar to other Synthwave epics like “So Electric” by Lifelike & “King of the Streets” by Lazerhawk.

The song “Eye of the Storm” gives you the sad feeling of expecting death. With its long, sad ensemble like sound this song could be playing on your stereo while you see a storm cloud that you know is full of acid rain slowly hovering over your city and you know what’s coming. It serves as a nice break from the non-stop energy you feel from the tracks before it.

The title track “Near Dark” and the song “The Pitt” might just be the two favorites of most Dance of the Dead fans and fans of anything 80s horror. If you were to put this song in the opening credits for a movie such as “Day of the Dead” or “Return of the Living Dead” you would have never guessed that this song was made in the year 2014.

Near Dark may just be Dance with the Dead’s best album yet. They’re still sticking to the horror theme that adds to the chilling but yet groovy vibe of their music and makes them stand out from the rest of the emerging music genre known as New Retro Wave. This album is a future classic and a must own for any fan of electronic music.

We have also decided there will be a total of 8 tracks, rather than the initial 6 we suggested. The quality of tracks sent is impressive and we feel 8 will be better for the listener!

Take My Time by Rosso Corsa Records

Without much pomp, but with a lot of anticipation by synth wave connoisseurs around the world, the Israeli retro wave producer Alex Karlinsky a.k.a. Highway Superstar dropped his debut album ‘Take My Time’ on 21 December 2013.

Released under the veritable stronghold of synth wave production, the Rosso Corsa label (Miami Nights 1984, Lazerhawk, Mitch Murder), it shares many of the most infectious aural traits with the label peers, but with enough personality and innovation to set itself as one of its prominent acts.

The production values soar high on this release which would fit perfectly somewhere in mid-1984. The choice of adding vocals to 3 out of 10 tracks (not counting the closing remix) means that the record takes off from the well-established blueprint of purely instrumental nostalgia-heavy soundscape and crosses with one (dancing) foot into the realm of pure 80s new wave/pop.

Let’s take a closer look at the album track-by-track:

1) Night in the City (feat. Dana Jean Phoenix)

The opening track features the soulful and sensual vocals of Toronto’s Dana Jean Phoenix. This is a classic, 80s nostalgia power song that would feel right at home in the opening sequence of Action Jackson. Dana Jean’s delivery is rich and the super sticky chorus evokes a lot of 80s zeitgeist.

2) Boardwalk Sunset

Just like its title, this is a pure mix of euphoria and melancholy that features prominently in the works of Rosso Corsa’s flagship artists. The uplifting sax and the percussion fuse deliciously with the wistful synth strings, just like you’d like them to.

3) All Around The World

Heavily syncopated beats blend nicely with the bells before the surprise kicks in: this is another track with singing. In this case, Who Ha borrows his emotional and shrill vocals and the effect is very reminiscent of the early Tears for Fears or even Duran Duran. A standout track that will keep you guessing.

4) Take My Time (feat. Dana Jean Phoenix and Chris Page)

The album’s eponymous track is another foray into the territory of mid 80s power pop and what a blast it is. The synths are layered thick and topped with an edgy guitar solo but the best part is the duet between Dana Jean Phoenix and Chris Page. Chris sounds a bit like Anoraak on his last album Chronotropic in verses and that is a good thing but it’s the couple’s palpable chemistry that really shapes the track.

5) Dialtones

Dialtones is a prototypical haunting and suspenseful Outrun electro track. It doesn’t really break the mold but is exciting enough and will have you imagining untold stories of crime investigations, computer hacking and phone tapping.

6) 10-80

Another archetypal neo 80s track that perhaps sounds like a bonus track from the electro powerhouse Kavinsky’s OutRun release. Sure, it might not be ‘Nightcall’, but it’s a solid addition to the sub-sub-genre that can be best described as “road wave”.

7) Them or Us

Highway Superstar cranks up the tension on this one to the max with some interesting synth choices but the overall impression is somewhat too generic. Possibly the album’s weakest link.

8) Camaro 86

Nothing outstanding here, but still a great track to daydream about days spent playing Sega Genesis driving games long past or something fast to pull off that last stretch on your gym’s treadmill.

9) Syndicate

The tempo slows down and your mind’s eye fills up with images of a smoky disco, dark & wet streets of a megalopolis and lots of neon clothing and make-up. Still there’s enough optimism and hope in this track to close out the album with a good vibe.

10) Take My Time (Tommy Remix)

Tommy manages to completely redefine the mood of the album’s third track with this slow dance rearrangement. All of the two vocalists’ synergy is retained but the overall feel is more ethereal and delicate. A very successful reimagining and a great last track.
