Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein – one half of the dark synth sensation S U R V I V E – have received an Emmy Award for their work on the fantastic and immensely popular synth soundtrack to “Stranger Things.”

They were awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music on September 10th, ahead of the televised award show set for September 17th. The much beloved “Stranger Things” has received 18 nominations over all for this year’s Emmy Awards.

The new season of “Stranger Things” is set to premiere on Netflix October 27th, and will likely be even darker than the first season. Executive Producer Shawn Levy said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Season two makes the Demogorgon look quaint.”

In an interview with The Vinyl Factory, Dixon explained the music will likely be darker as well. “I’m sure it will be weirder,” he said. “…because I think they are going to spend a little more time in the Upside Down this season.”

Zombie: The Unearthed OST by SurgeryHead (Featuring GosT)

Ooh, I was very excited to get the greenlight on this one. Horror fans, especially old-school gut-munchers like myself, have fond memories of Lucio Fulci’s classic undead flick Zombie. A valued part of my VHS collection as a horror-obsessed teen, Zombie tells the now-familiar “zombie plague” story, but with less rubber science and more awesome gore and FX.

Emmet Kiernan, aka SurgeryHead, made this tribute to the original soundtrack to coincide with Rough House Publishing’s comic book version of the film. The comic itself features art by Derek Rook, and is incredibly hard to get ahold of now, as I found out to my dismay. The album art, however, is by the same artist, so you get a teasing taste of what you’d expect waiting within the pages. Hopefully some of you will be able to succeed where I have failed and get a look at the comic, but the soundtrack is LUSH. It is incredibly atmospheric, and even seems to tell the story itself. The titles all reference aspects or even scenes of the movie, but for the most part this is a loose interpretation; you couldn’t definitely glue a track to a scene. That’s fine though… most of it’d fit anywhere. This is Hollywood quality score work, and I don’t just say that as hyperbole. It is crisp, clean, and precisely effective. There is no overuse of anything, and while parts of it seem minimalist, that’s actually for the best. Music for horror isn’t supposed to be overpowering; it’s like putting ketchup on a hamburger… you don’t want to drown in it.

As far as highlighting individual tracks, “Underwater Hell” is an excellent example. It builds slowly, using just enough drum-sound while keeping a steady climb in volume. “The Bloody Dawn of Maldye” has a bit of grungy nastiness to it; it grinds, burns slow, and evokes the heartbeat of a frightened victim. “I Buried You, But I See You Walking” is perhaps the most insidious of Kiernan’s works on the album; between light drums and low thrumming tones, you hear sounds that might even make you think of a dentist’s drills. Shudder-worthy. “Zombies, Everywhere!” is another one that steadily climbs to new heights of terror; there are even some tastefully-placed church bells!

My personal (admittedly biased) favorite is GosT’s remix of the original title music for the film. Everything GosT does makes me imagine purposefully hitting someone with a semi tractor-trailer. And I love it. The original pumping beat is present, but GosT’s signature chainsaw distortion and cutting high notes lend a modern and grisly taste to the recipe.

Lastly, I’d encourage our readers to spend the 4 euros to buy the album because not only is it great, but its profits go to Doctors Without Borders, helping people who’ve survived real catastrophes. And if zombie films taught me anything, it’s that without humanity’s capacity to work together and heal its wounds, we are doomed.

I give this album eight out of ten, and it earned it. SurgeryHead and GosT are two of my favorite artists in our scene, and they’ve acquitted themselves well in this homage to Fulci’s work. Eat up!

While listening through OGRE’s most recent release, particularly
the funky “Job For A Cowboy”, my girlfriend walked by and said something
interesting: “Are you listening to 80’s soundtracks again?” This was
interesting because as I listened through 195,
one word kept popping into my mind. Cinematic. This album is completely
cinematic from start to finish. To be honest I have a lot to say about this
album. Both musically and stylistically it really brought a lot up in my mind.
I will try to keep this from going off on too many tangents.

The first two things that you will notice about this album
are the large amount of songs and the short duration of each song. This is
something interesting and I feel it represents a gradual shift that will
continue happening in music. We still define and structure music in terms that
were born in the vinyl era. I love listening to vinyl; it has warmth that is
hard to replicate digitally, but that paradigm doesn’t always work with age of
digital releases and Soundcloud. In the case of 195, this isn’t an issue. The short song lengths keep the overall
length comparable to other full-length releases, but it is vastly different
from other albums in so many ways. The songs are separated and aside from a few
tracks all have a distinct feel, though the transition between songs is often
seamless and makes everything feel continuous. For example, I felt like the
album really kicked off (and punched me in the face) on “Don’t Call Me a Hero”.
The thing is, that’s the third track. It never actually feels like the third
track, and listening to it on its own doesn’t feel as satisfying as listening
to it immediately after the two songs before it, and at a combined total of
1:43 it never feels like a chore to do so. The album would not work as well if
you played it on shuffle; I’d even go as far as saying it wouldn’t work as well
to not listen to the entire thing.

Musically, the album is similar in a lot of ways to Ed
Harrison’s 2009 OST release NeoTokyo,
an album I consider one of the finest overall pieces of music created over the
past 15 years. 195 fills me with the same kind of wide-eyed awe and sheer
excitement to be basking in a piece of music. These songs do not have a
traditional verse-chorus structure and take such dramatic turns that it is
really hard to not find your interest piqued throughout. Because of the
cohesive nature of the album, it becomes difficult to label songs as the best
on the release. There are several moments
that I would define as noteworthy and exceptionally interesting. The
aforementioned crashing of “Don’t Call Me a Hero,” the haunting middle of
“Sneaking Suspicions”, and the return of an other worldly melody that peaked in
an earlier song that comes full force in “Sentai” are a few that I can
immediately recall. As I have mentioned and will continue to mention, the
cinematic scope of the album is in high gear in these moments, the extent that
I feel as though “Sentai” contains a motif.

The short song lengths, while distinguishing the album from
OGRE’s contemporaries, sometimes feels like a hindrance. Several times I found
myself really intrigued by a melody or felt a strong reaction from a song and
just as I was really getting excited by it, the song would end. It sometimes
feels like the really exciting and memorable moments aren’t given their full
opportunity to be explored and elaborated and the tone can feel a bit rushed as
a result.

This album nails aesthetic style, which, while not being the
music, is an important aspect of any form of art for me. The artwork for 195 is beautiful with what I believe are
references to both Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion. The figure on
the motorcycle overlooking the city feels like a shout-out to the former, while
the ominous gargantuan figure very reminiscent an angel from Evangelion. I would have loved if Rebuild of Evangelion had used this or
similar music as a soundtrack. This movie-like / narrative quality to the music
is further complimented by the short exposition OGRE has on bandcamp about the
world of the album.

Any fan of NRW, fans of old anime, or anyone who can
appreciate cinematic and complex music need to check this out. It is fairly
priced and definitely worth it. It is introspective and brooding and moving all
at once. I make certain to not throw the
word “epic” around. This is an epic album. Something metallic and monstrous
lurks underneath the surface of OGRE’s full length 195.

Jordan F. delights with the latest record that ranks up with the best examples of Outrun Synthwave sub-genre.

JORDAN F. – SLIPSTREAM

by Filip Galetic

Jordan F. delights with the latest record that ranks up with the best examples of Outrun Synthwave sub-genre.

Outrun fans will rejoice hearing the steaming fresh new LP by Sydney’s Jordan F. Its quintessential Rosso Corsa sound will feel right at home on your playlist that already has Lazerhawk and Miami Nights 1984 on it.

The record starts with the epic “Abandon Streets” that at the whopping 10 and a half minutes provides a mini journey of its own with flashes of gelled up hair, sleek wet-rain sports cars, neon lipstick and danger.

The track offers plenty of drama, adrenaline soaked sections alternating with quieter bridges, all coated in a rolling arpeggiated bass line.

The second track, “Take Flight” has an uplifting and emotional progression with a cinematic flair.

“Into the Night” is the first stand out track of the album with an infectious fade in and main hook that compares to such Rosso Corsa classics such as Miami Nights 1984 “Saved by the Bell” or Lost Years’ “Storm”. It only loses a bit of momentum in the middle of the track but quickly recovers.

Track nr. 4, starts off softly, aptly to its name “Space Romance”. One minute into the song, and you’re in for a pure synth bliss with a gentle but unrelenting riff carrying you through.

“Nightwave” is the fifth track and it brings back some of the thrill into the album with a heart pounding mix of deep synth bass and undulating lead.

In track nr. 6, we seem to go back into the more romantic territory. The track’s name “Hologram Rose” is a reference to the 1976 short story by William Gibson. The story tells of a man who in a bleak future uses sense-recordings of his ex-lover to be able to fall asleep. I haven’t read it but the track does convey that poignant sensibility this story might possess.

Second stand out track of the album, “So Close” immediately hits you with those haunting reverb-y synths in the background and builds up an aural image of some kind of futuristic intrigue playing out before your eyes.

The album closes by making a full circle: here we have a Part II to the opening track. The sequel takes the motifs from the filmic opener and plays around with them in new ways.

All in all, “Slipstream” delivers that signature Rosso Corsa Records sound in droves and is primarily mandatory listening for the fans of this particular subgenre of synth wave. For those looking for something new and cutting edge, this might not be the best choice but you certainly cannot deny Jordan F.’s ability to come close to the masters with his sound and provide some very striking auditory imagery.

Gamer,
hailing from New Zealand (the country that has royally bought us
Lorde) have released their second EP “Smoke Signals”.

Stylistically,
as their name implies, Gamer sits at the 8-bit, retro video game end
of the musical spectrum. Drums are suitably simple and rigidly
programmed and the songs are economically constructed. Tracks have
names like ‘Quest’, ‘Turbo’ and ‘Maximum Pursuit’ – these guys like
their video games and the music that goes with it!

The
“Smoke Signals” EP features four tracks. Opening with the
title track, a slow-paced, synth-washed affair that could easily
close-out the end credits of a movie.

‘Winners
Take All’ is high-energy game music that implies you are about to
play a level that involves some quick thinking and sharp skills. Are
you ready to do battle on this special stage, race the track and take
down the opponents in the process? Here we go! The track also
features what sounds like a retro motocross commentary in part.

Next
up is ‘Zeros and Ones’. This is a more conventional sounding ‘song’
with a nice big polysynth sound (presumably a Roland Juno). Adding a
vocal to this song could work well and would turn it into an catchy
pop track.

Closing
the EP is ‘Maximum Pursuit’ which ramps things up. Your challenge is
to catch the offenders (or be caught as the case may be). The music
sets up the scene and even if you crash and burn at least the music
will soften the humiliation of defeat!

One
thing to mention about Gamer is that they also create retro ‘pixel
art’. This results in some excellent visuals to accompany several
of their tracks in the form of animated music videos. The animation
is excellently done in a retro, 8bit video game style. These videos
have an underlying twisted sense of humour with a bizarre range of
ideas and characters – aliens, the Pope, fast cars, guns, medical
experiments…It’s freak out time! The clips are well worth checking
out as they show what Gamer is really about – music and visuals.

Overall
a “Smoke Signals” is a solid follow-up EP to their
self-titled debut. Geographically it is an important release from a
country which is not known for producing a lot of electronic music.
Maybe a Gamer remix of a Lorde track is in order then, or one of
their pixel art music videos – Lorde being dissected by crazy aliens
would really be something!
