Sierra drops animated video for ‘Gone’

Back from an extensive North American tour supporting the rollermobster Carpenter Brut, Darkwave’s rising star Sierra has dropped a gorgeous animated music video for the title track to her second record GONE.

Directed by Thomas Landrein and art director Jonas Genevaz, ‘Gone’ follows an armed resistance group through a number of apocalyptic views of the French capital being torn asunder by armed forces. Visceral and grandiose, Sierra’s tribute to France’s brilliant animators serves as yet another urgent reminder to dive back into the artist’s stellar back catalogue.

As for you European Synth-heads out there, be on the lookout for upcoming tour dates, as Sierra will be resuming the Leather Terror tour with Carpenter Brut next week for a series of European shows.

OSC’s ‘Deuce’ EPs brings back Tennis BGM nostalgia

Following up on their tribute to City-pop Yume No Machi, Brighton-based producer Opus Science Collective has returned with an equally refreshing angle to croon your senses to sweet surrender. As the title suggests, Deuce is an EP focused on the bright, punchy sounds of Tennis Videogame soundtracks. It’s funky, colorful, and long enough to leave you yearning for another set.

Thankfully, the EP’s release coincides with that of a Vapor Edition and Remix album featuring Caspro, Bart Graft, Eyeliner , Xennon and Donor Lens (featured below).

A mere year after dropping the Odyssey of Noise album trilogy as well as bringing the Occult musical saga into a new decade Occams Laser is bouncing back into the ring to score his seventh knockout round since 2020.

Phantasm is a ravenous new chapter for the dark synth warlock, fueled by bloodlust and dedicated to the wretched beasts that lurk below. Packed with overdriven synth leads, buzz bass lines and pummeling beats, Phantasm is a thrill-ride fit to score your sweetest nightmares.

Kavinsky returns with ‘Reborn’

It’s a day many never thought would come, a fantasy as impalpable as the rose-tinted past in our rear-view mirrors. Kavinsky has returned, refueled, Reborn. With this first album in nine years, Vincent’s comeback was sure to mark a historic moment for the retrowave scene. With the two first singles to drop tying in closely to Kavinsky’s past work, M.Belorgey was sure to stir up the hype to accommodate a warmly welcomed return for himself.

One thing that is for sure is that Kavinsky has definitely cozied up to the Synthwave genre and the love it has given him over the past decade. If anything, Reborn very much feels like the exact comeback album that the Retrowave scene has been wanting to hear from him for all of these years, the very album some may have built a name on by attempting to produce.

The main issue one may address about the album is that whereas past releases helped flesh out a new retro retro aesthetic, Reborn does little if anything to expand this universe further. The steady pace that is maintained throughout most of its 47 minute runtime eventually flattens out the impact of the album’s main singles and further instills the impression of a driver cruising on autopilot. Furthermore, the vocal performances more or less blend together seamlessly whilst not quite living up to the grandeur of Belorgey’s past hit singles. ‘Goodbye’ featuring Sébastien Tellier stands out in its attempt to evoke the raspy, robotic vocal effect of ‘Night Call’, but feels ultimately dwarved by its predecessor.

Ultimately, Reborn stands on firm ground as a tribute to Belorgey’s retrowave legacy, adds a couple of new cuts to your Outrun playlist but doesn’t quite hold the sense of ambition needed to stand out from its peer releases and lead the retrowave sound to new horizons.
