For those looking for some pure outrun vibes, Speedworld has come back around the racing track and is waiting on you to shift into high gears for one last victory lap.

Throughout its 8 tracks, Apex takes you back to the glory days of Motorsports, when blood-pumping synth sounds and state of the art car engineering met to deliver wonder and excitement through your television sets. Whether it be with Out Run or any other classic racing games, no outrun listening experience would feel complete without a cartridge loaded up to a humming console.

If you’re feeling a little rusty from all that time spent away from the wheel, Speedworld is here to brief you back up to speed. Every song title on the album is described and defined in great detail to make sure you’re all set for the challenge.

So get on your marks, get set, press play and let the engine roars guide you to the finish line.

Drenched in melodic, beachy vibes, “Miami Life” is the first single we’ve heard from the upcoming debut LP “Motor,” and wonderfully showcases the artist’s abilities outside of their darksynth comfort zone. If this is any single to judge what the rest of the album will be, we’re in for a hot treat!

To top it off, Robert Parker, Donbor and Highway Superstar have dipped their hands into the track as well with each releasing their own remix. Grab a listen to all four below!

Put in your quarters, and use the wheel to choose your car. Use the gas pedal to confirm your choice. Lets see… Jeep, Mustang, Beetle…. OH! A fancy Italian looking sports car! Let’s go with that one, it has to be the best, and probably only for professionals.

In the world of Italian Exotic cars, there are plenty that get attention, but only few that people actually recognize from memory. Today, we are talking about the king of the dream, the Ferrari Testarossa.

In the 80’s Ferrari was looking to improve upon its Berlinetta Boxer. They wanted to make it bigger, better, faster… and most of all, they wanted to release it to the US, as the BB never made it to American soil. In doing so, they took a famous Ferrari name (the 1957 Testa Rossa) and made two words one.

The old BB was known for overheating, so much so that the interior itself would feel like sitting a furnace. To remedy this, Ferrari added a whopping 3 different radiators to keep it cool. Extra space was needed for this and the old BB was a little cramped to begin with so they essentially had to redesign a car from the ground up.

Little did they know, they would be creating an icon at the same time.

data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

Ferrari used a F12 (flat 12) cylinder as opposed to a V12. The flat orientation of the engine provides a naturally lower center of gravity. The 4.9 liter produced a impressive 390 HP. Zero to 60 in 5.2 seconds, and a quarter mile in 13.5 seconds. Not bad considering the many many mundane options of the 1980’s.

The Pininfarina design caught the eye of not only would be customers, but the hearts of Americans as it speed along high speed pop culture.

The Testarossa began is insane popularity on the hit show Miami Vice. This relationship of man and car continued on throughout the years as many prominent celebrities bought and owned Testarossa’s. You can also find the Testarossa on the cover art of much of Kavinskys Outrun album.

From SEGA’s Out Run to Midway’s Cruis’n USA, the Testarossa was specifically featured in over 33 video games. It was included in even far more video games as a caricature, without licensing agreements. However, there is no mistaking the low profile and side strakes.

In TV, music, video games, and real life, the Testarossa will always live on in the psyche of every retro head out there. With $150,00 or so, like Billy Ocean, you can get out of your dreams and get into this car.

Miami Kills is the sophomore LP by the genre veteran Action Jackson who brings back his tight production skills and great storytelling on this record.

Miami Kills is the sophomore LP by the genre veteran Action Jackson who brings back his tight production skills and great storytelling on this record.

What might seem a paint-by-numbers synthwave affair, is actually a very solid entry in the cop revenge sub-(sub?)-genre.

The beats are mostly classic with not too much deviation from the form but we forgive that as Action Jackson firmly steers the wheel moving down the corrupt cops of Miami.

It’s like a less demented version of the Hotline Miami soundtrack, with clear focus on the range between outrun to darkwave.

ONE WAY OUT

This sounds like the opening title screen track if this ever became a 16-bit game. The snares are sharp and you can feel the bass in your plexus.

PALM KILL

Outrunesque and frantic, you can’t help but to imagine a lot of casualties and smoking barrels, screeching tires and bullet wounds wherever Action Jackson makes his way.

BEACH RELOAD

Evocative of Jan Hammer, this track screams shady deals or some kind of betrayal.

DEAD LIST

Whoever is on Jackson’s Dead List beware, your days are numbered. This track puts you in the shoes of our renegade cop as he preps for the pending showdown(s).

US FLAG

The flow on this one is mad, really has a lot going on but never seems overproduced. Gives almost an upbeat feel to massacre dished out by Jackson.

SHOOTING RANGE

The only track I didn’t really feel that much. It’s like a good interlude between the first and the second part of the album.

MACHINE GUY NERD

This is track with one of my favorite lead riffs on the album. It has a slightly sexy feel and could easily just as well be played during a sweaty interlude Jackson has along the way.

POWER

Untypical in structure and with unexpected touches – and because of that slightly without momentum – Power powers through to…

FLORIDA DISCO

The definite standout track, makes the pulsating rubbery bass sound fresh again. Transports you to a Miami disco circa 1984 and allows you to feel the lust and danger lurking in there.

JACKSON’S THEME

Every cop revenge B-movie needs a closing credits theme and this fulfills that nicely. At almost 6 minutes, it’s just tad overlong but provides some quite sleek, energetic moments especially towards the end.

All in all, Action Jackson confirms his status of one of the lesser touted, but deserving synthwave stalwarts. Miami Kill provides an octane ride that will especially bring pleasure to those seeking a classic, synth wave sound and high production values.

Verdict: 3,5/5 stars

<![endif]-->When thinking about the aesthetic of the 1980’s (which we do often, admit it!), it doesn’t take long until you land on Miami Vice. The clothing, the music, the neon. Many people who are not familiar with the series itself will almost instantly know what you are talking about if you bring it up. This is for good reason, as the show was a neon-infused adrenaline shot to the heart of television at the time. Though if you watch the show on Netflix, you may be surprised it is more restrained and subtle than you may have been expecting.

Then there’s Miami Vice Remix.

Miami Vice Remix is a 5-issue series from IDW Publishing by Joe Casey and Jim Mahfood. The art style of Remix very quickly establishes its identity as something unique and not an uninspired reboot. The harsh edges and angles evokes German Expressionism of the 1920’s, albeit bathed in a lush neon glow. It makes the setting appear simultaneously modern and retro, but never appears redundant.

The story follows the ethos of the artwork and moves at a blistering pace. While it may seem a little erratic at times, or like you are given a lot of names in a short period of time, it works well in context and is supported by the art. The narrative doesn’t hold the reader’s hand. I was extremely thankful for this, as that sort of attenuating of narrative details or a story’s world lowers reader expectations and is honestly condescending. Just as the art is bustling, the story is bustling, and that’s fine. That’s Miami. That is the world this story lives in. The plot itself is intriguing and involves the same characters from the show in their undercover roles confronting “Miami Bath Salts”-addled zombies, no doubt influenced by the cannibal attack in Miami back in 2012.

This may not be Miami Vice for people who are expecting a direct adaptation or continuation of the TV series, but it is Miami Vice for the Drive-generation of neo-80’s nostalgic future lovers. And isn’t that just thrilling?

Note: The next Miami Vice Remix review will cover #2 and #3. Then it will be as released.

By Rhys Pearce

Over the years,

Canada

has had a knack for producing some great music, everything from the likes of

Glenn Gould

to

D.O.A

and

Miami Nights 1984 are no exception. MN84 is Michael Glover, a synth revival pioneer and helmsman of

Actrazer

. He is also notably known as the founder of the highly influential,

Rosso Corsa Records

, a record label that is responsible for bringing us the likes of,

Lazerhawk, Mitch Murd

er and

Jordan F.

In 2010, MN84 introduced himself to us with the breakthrough album, ‘

Early Summer’

, an accomplished and confident debut featuring 9 tracks of groove ridden, dreamy synth pop. What’s immediately evident here is his ability to encapsulate nostalgic bliss and create towering sounds that stir those deep routed emotions of the 80’s. It became evident at this point that we were dealing with someone with enormous talent.

Picture of MN84 taken by Wolf Sheep Records

During the recording of his second album, a remix he did of

Gotye’s

‘Somebody that I used to know’ exploded onto the internet, even reaching the attention of Rolling Stone, who later featured the song on their website. This would play an integral part in exposing him to a much larger audience and opening the door wider for the new wave synth movement. It’s very rarely that you hear a remix that totally blows the original song out of the water; MN84’s custom sound combined with Gotye’s melodic vocal line, embrace one another like a long lost love and come together as if how fate had intended. On March 18

th

2012, MN84 dropped his anticipated second full length album entitled,

Turbulence, with

many hailing it as his finest work to date. The notable difference between ‘

Early Summer

’ and ‘

Turbulence

’ is that Glover appeared to find an extra gear on

Turbulence

, lifting the atmospheric tones to new heights and packing in extra punches with some seriously memorable hooks.

In the meantime, Glover has been keeping busy with various remixes with the likes of the Grammy nominated,

Electric Youth, as well as Night Crawler, Silent Gloves

and

Kristine

. He has also briefly resurrected

Actazer

, posting a new song online entitled ‘

The Return

’ and has even hinted at a new collaboration project called ‘

Future Noir

’ with close friend,

DJ Murge

.

In March of this year MN84 made a welcome return, posting a new song on his Facebook page, named

“Reflex Training

’. This subsequently reduced some fans to quivering messes, with one dude stating that his face “….has been melted!”. Even though the song didn’t appear to be a massive departure from the sound heard on his previous record, something tells me that we can expect something very special from the new material. Are you excited? Because I certainly am.

With a highly anticipated new album getting released this year, Perturbator is set to be the next big thing since slices SPAM. Not only does Pert have a strong internet presence, but Perturbator now looks to take over other realms with his sound! A beast in the making.

FM Attack recently announced he will be calling it quits after his last retro inspired album. Sad news, but this guy has paved the way for many of the new musicians in this scene. Consistent and solid in sound, FM Attack’s original sounds makes him a deadly force. Not to add that he also sells 10K+ in albums. BEAST!

Miami Nights 1984 is one of the few artists who has actually received a notable publication (Rolling Stone Magazine) and has actually worked with a Grammy nominated artist (Gotye). His uplifting retro bliss synths are one of the most authentic 80’s feel to the scene.

Lazerhawk is one of the few artists with a dominant internet presence in this retro scene. All if not most of his videos quickly surpass 10K and keep climbing monthly due to the heavy demand for his sound. No-one else in the scene has this kind of lockdown. NOONE!! Power Glove are literally the pioneers of this Synthwave Genre. Not only did they inspire Lazerhawk to begin his conquest in this genre, but they have the most TV, media and online publications to date. Featuring in major TV shows such as “Key and Peele” and major game soundtracks for “Farcry 3: Blood Dragon”, as well as the IGN gaming site, these guys are literally putting the retro scene on the map, at a MAJOR level. If a major/ independent label want to sign you, better thank these moguls for their efforts in getting this scene exposure!!!
