System96 has a new double re-release on Eyewitness Records! The criminally chill “Emotion” and “Memories” were originally released in a bundle, but very quickly sold out. Now they’re back in two sets of pre-orders so everyone will have a better chance at snagging these impressively crisp albums!

Based in Atlanta, System96 has been crafting his delicious brand of chillsynth for only a couple of years. However, this artist has quickly come into his own, and the proof is in the awesome tracks that comprise “Emotion” and “Memories.” Each of these albums is crafted in the instantly recognizable chillsynth style, with heavy influences coming from chillsynth icons like HOME and Hotel Pools. System96 even recently collabed with Hotel Pools for the awesome single ‘Lynx!

Both “Emotion” and “Memories” also feature the phenomenal Lucy In Disguise in the tracks ‘Autonomy’ and ‘Emerald’ (If you haven’t already, you really need to check out “Unkown Frequency” and “Sunset Radio” from Lucy in Disguise, they’re fantastic albums.) I bet you didn’t
think I was going to take you here this Halloween. Well, I guess you were wrong
in all the right ways you could be. Because before Mushroomhead, Slipknot, ICP
came on the scene and way before Wes Borland started dressing up like Kung Fu
Skeletor, there was Gwar.

Gwar
formed in 1984, they are a thrash
band from Virginia comprised of a rotating line-up of musicians, artists and
filmmakers from Slave Pit Inc. They are known for their elaborate and often
grotesque appearances and sadistic stage performances. “Imagine a gumbo soup of blood, brains, Cthulhu, Barbarella, Snuff-porn
Conan the barbarian, Guardians of the Galaxy, Luke Skysquirter, Skate metal and
political and social satire.” If you are lucky enough to attend their shows
then you are in possession of fond memories of celebrities being fed to worms,
disembowed and beheaded like Oklahoma beauty queens; all these things while
being splashed on the face Peter North style with more fluid than a Gallagher
show. They were ugly; they were funny; their songs were really damn good and
unforgettable.

The
Grammy nominated Phallus In Wonderland was their first full length film. It
depicts the conflict between Gwar and The Morality Squad after the castration
and theft of Oderus Urungus’ Cuttlefish
of Cthulhu. The Morality Squad consisting of a group of overtly hyper-sensitive
knee jerky hypocritical stereotypes that today can easily be any of your
favorite Fox News & MSNBC personalities: Corporal Punishment, Grambo, Tiny
and we can’t forget the viscous filled Father Reverend Bohab. This piece is a
musical. Sprinkled throughout this near hour long art piece are the romantic
and beer sex inducing songs such as ‘Crack in the Egg’, ‘Have You Seen ME?’, ‘The
Road Behind’, ‘The Morality Squad’, ‘Gor-Gor’ and ‘Ham on the Bone’.

This
is a musical.

Starring:
Oderus Urungus, Beefcake the Mighty, Balsac the Jaws of Death, Jizmax the
Gusher, Sexecutioner, Slymenstra Hymen and Sleazy P. Martini. With a cameo
appearance by Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers.

October
is here, which means you’ll be filling up to the gullet with beer and getting
ready for Halloween. I encourage, hope, and suggest this become the soundtrack
to this year’s festivities and debauchery. In fact you should all watch this
before heading out into the night and creating your future romances with the new
Trevor Something album or Timecop1983’s recent release, just like I plan to do
this month.

So light your candles this month. Leave
some food on your porch. Remember to join in the festivities on Mischief Night.
And like every month keep your finger pressed down on that Rewind Button.

3:23am

It’s late night and leading into early morning; this
year’s October has just begun. The cold sniffles have got me by the balls and I’m
trying to make this into an interesting thread before the sun catches me awake past
my deserved bedtime. The days are getting shorter with age. The memories
are still burning but the lighter is gathering some rust and needs maintenance.
I’m halfway through choosing my third movie of the evening. I’d decided to have
a retro cyberpunk binge viewing session; beginning with Blade Runner (1982),
followed by AKIRA (1988). The last selection of my trilogy isn’t even retro, it’s
a recent release called Who Am I – No System is Safe (Kein System ist sicher) a
German thriller about a hacker group grinding on the road to infamy. It’s the
closest I’ll get to a Hackers remake.

3:30am

Well that was futile. I couldn’t even find the damn
flick. I’ve been hunched back into my leather chair listening to my 80’s
playlist of songs and staring at my Hunter S. Thompson poster for five minutes;
why did I ever buy Where the Buffalo Roam (1980) on DVD?

Mindlessly chopping away at the keys, typing in
whatever random thoughts turn over from the deck of my subconscious. It’s
perfect because this is when the carnival starts, the merry-go-round in my
brain, no different from the one in the LOST BOYS (1987). Spinning in circles
with gaudy decals and out dated bulbs… Let’s see where my fingers take me.
Clicking through my playlists and double backing like a screwed and chopped
sleuth. I took another listen to Trevor Something’s – Trevor Something Does Not
Exist album. Then I give Timecop1983’s new album a good listen and it results in
my immediate enjoyment. Before I know it the blue haze is creeping up outside
my window and I have forgotten most of the ideas I initially had a few minutes
ago.

5:45am

After, finally removing my boots I can feel it
coming. Sleep is almost here. I ended up drinking some chilled Modelo’s and
instant chatted with a vaporwave artist from Ontario, Canada named SYLLABUS (facebook/vaporwave.is.dead) about his
recent release. We kept jonesing about childhood like a deleted scene from a high
school reunion on how cool it once was to leave your house and go to the store
to pick up cassette tapes at the local music shop. Remember Cassingles? We even
agreed that Return of the Living Dead (1985) zombies could kick the asses of the
walkers on a certain cable shows. “Good people”, is all I can say.

6:14am

I made a nice little Cyberpunk themed playlist for
myself called Blade Runner Nights with some bits from different artists; a few
NRW and some from elsewhere or yesteryear. The title could’ve been better but
the carnival is slowing down. Writer’s block has me in her grip these past
couple of days. All I can do is wait and
tease these syllables a little bit here and there. Probably put on some Joe
Frank monologues or something before bed. UP ALL NIGHT is down for the count
again. A head full of cold sickness and a napkin stuffed up my decommissioned Charlie
snout. Maybe I’ll have a dream like a Michael Mann film. Maybe, I’ll dream of
women with crimped hair, maybe not. Maybe I won’t dream at all and just fade.
Maybe but I hope not. Only thing left to do is just lay back and close my eyes
and fall into it. Before, I become just another internal monologue from a
sleepless flashback artist and lo-fi delinquent.

Daft Punk Album Review (May 2013)

Daft
Punk. We all know them. Or at least, we all know about them.
And if we didn’t before Random Access Memories was released, we
most definitely do now.

5
years is a long time. In today’s future world, at the pace we’re
going, it’s even longer. It’s a lot of time for someone to learn
about themselves. RAM doesn’t even feel like we’re even listening
to that kind of growth. Maybe that’s why there’s so much
backlash. Not about sounding different, but emotionally, maybe the
collective fan base expected some sort of growth or at least some
novelty.

What
we all received was something more than that. We got something super
personal from people who, for so many years, decided to remain
semi-anonymous. And maybe that’s all we should have expected. I
keep saying we as if I had any idea what they were working on.
Honestly, I hadn’t really thought about them in a long time. 5
years is a really long time.

RAM
opens with a crash that instantly puts you front and center at a rock
concert. A legit rock concert. The funky rhythm guitars, and full
warm bassline that follow lock on to your whole nervous system and
make you want to smile. This is Give Life Back To Music, the
first track on the album. It sets the tone for what would overall end
up sounding like really fun dance music. Oh, no, it doesn’t at all
sound like what passes for today’s “dance” music. It sounds
even better than that.

Disco
is the name of the game. The first three tracks sound like disco had
a party and invited gritty cop shows. Seriously, the vibraphones, the
rhodes keys, the silky smooth bass. It’s so funky, yet so chilled
out, that you sort of can’t stop listening. It’s not as
electronic as one might as expect from Daft Punk (speaking
generally). (speaking specifically) I hadn’t expected anything or
listened to their earlier material before hand recently. So what I
experienced with those fresh ears was the ridiculously warm tones.
Without caring about the content of the lyrics first, I was hooked by
the production quality.

Giorgio
By Moroder is produced so well, and not just well, but with a
simple attitude. The simplicity of this particular track, broken up
by two actual Giorgio Moroder anecdotes, is actually where the homage
to the god of synth lies. If you actually go back and listen for it,
the old Moroder classics are all very very simple. By that, I mean:
not complicated. It’s the right elements being twirled about
together in that specific way that makes it a “Moroder”
composition.

Rhodes
seem to be a key element to this album. A great choice, I might add.
With the generous amount of those rhodes keys, you’re allowed to
get into that 70s cop show vibe. With all the emotion that those
chords can inspire. There does seem to be a deliberate attempt to
inject wide swathes of good feelings and emotions. Maybe they really
are… just human after all.

…ugh,
another ‘human after all’ pun?

But
seriously, Within, the track that transitions us from the
wanton fun of the first three tracks, takes us deep down into what
these possibly think on a day to day basis. We can’t ever be sure,
because we don’t know them, but it’s kind of fun to get think
that these robots can get this introspective. It’s got that classic
Daft Punk vocoder vocals mixed with dreamy synths. What makes it a
great track are the harmonies. From track to track, the progressions
of chords and inherent harmonies really activates some sort of
emotional third eye and make you feelthink. I just made that up.
Feelthink. Ha.

The
next five tracks are what I would call the Radio tracks. Any number
of them, from Julian Casablanca’s vocals on Instant Crush,
to Pharell’s vocals on Lose Yourself To Dance and Get
Lucky, even to Paul Williams’ soft and heartfeltly pseudo
ballad Touch. They seemed designed for that radio airtime.
Touch is very honest and moving, it totally sounds like his
Love Boat theme in the middle. It’s so Paul Williams, even Paul
Williams probably said “jeez, I did it again.”

Beyond
sounds like a Daft Punk train collided with a Michael Mcdonald one. I
can’t not think of his I Keep Forgetting when listening to it. If
you don’t know what song that is, look it up, and then you’ll be
like “ohhh, that one.” Motherboard sounds like they had
just gotten done with a Phillip Glass marathon and then hopped into
the studio. Those staccatos are super sweet. Doin’ It Right
just screams Brian Wilson. They have mentioned loving Brian Wilson in
press stuff for other albums and shows a lot on this track.

The drums
are lackluster though, I feel like they should have just dropped the
modern electro drums for some sort of other bassy rhythm keeper. They
feel out of place. Contact is a wonderful sound collage that
possibly tells some story about them leaving for/coming back from
space? Not so sure. Either way, it sounds delicious to my ears.

Random
Access Memories. I get it. It’s a collection of sounds they liked
and loved and learned during any and all phases of their lives. The
presentation is simply from the perspective of worldwide superstars.
Super cool. Super simple.

To
sum it up: this makes me feel as if I were watching a documentary
that was also some sort of dreamy rock concert. It’s about casual
partying, it’s set on the West coast, we’re all dancing along to
edited flashes of bouncy movement; it’s all drenched in that
sunsetty pallette. And everyone’s smilin’.

Give
it a shot.
