For this third expedition down memory lanes, we are honoured by the presence of our guest Mecha Maiko. known to many as Hayley Stewart, the former voice behind Dead Astronauts. Having just dropped a new music video for ‘Phones’ on our Youtube channel, the Torontonian artist was kind enough to spare some time to talk about musical discovery and some defining moments that led her to the sounds of Synths.

It’s lovely to chat with you again! What’ve you got to share and recommend to your fans and readers?

The first thing that came to mind was an album that introduced me to electronic music when I was a kid. It’s weird how there’s so much to pick from, yet I immediately went to this one album. It’s Utah Saint’s self-titled album, released in 1992. When I was a kid, my dad was basically my major musical influence. My mom was also an influence, but my dad would always make me these mix CDs, and this was the first full album that I really got into. We would listen to this CD in the car whenever we had a really long drive to do.

The album is very techno and ravey, but then there’s also some downtempo songs. They were pioneers in sample-based music. You’ve got some Eurythmics, The Human League and Kate Bush samples in there. They pulled inspiration from well-known songs and turned it into something fresh and layered. They helped pave the way for a lot of music that came afterwards: artists like DJ Shadow or Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk… I’m leaving a lot out by picking this one, but I guess it’s because I’m going back to what I used to consider my guilty pleasures. I should be less guilty about these! [Laughs] I’ve been listening to a lot of early techno and getting back into this album.

So your parents were really into music as well.

Yes, but purely as fans, really. They enjoyed going through records and trying to figure out what I liked and what would stick. When I was growing up, my parents were listening to a lot of Grunge like Smashing Pumpkins and Hole, heavy nineties rock stuff. I thought that the sound of electric guitars and raspy voices were the worst thing in the world, but now I have an appreciation for it. There were artists like The Flower Pot Men and Heaven 17 that made their way onto a few CDs, and the first time I heard one of those Synthesizers, I was like “How is this sound even happening!? What is that??”. Heaven 17 has that nostalgic feel, for me. The Hawaiian Pups as well! There are some things that I grew up with that give me nostalgia, but there are also things that I’ve found along the way.

A heavy component of Retrowave is its tendency to make you feel nostalgia from music made from old-school sounds, after all. Like a number of artists in the scene, I grew up in the nineties, yet the music still hits me in that same way.

You’re totally right with that. I think the artists that got me into Synthwave were probably Com Truise and – even if they are on the fringes of that world – Washed Out and Neon Indian. Once I started to know what to look for and what I was drawn to, it was easier to dive in. I’m in the exact same boat as you: I grew up in the nineties.

Do you remember how you first got exposed to these artists you just mentioned?

That is an excellent question. I think it has a lot to do with music blogs. I can’t remember a lot of them, because a lot of them don’t exist anymore. I know Disco Dust had a lot of stuff, I would follow them religiously. I think I found a few labels that had some really great artists, too. I cast such a wide net when it comes to researching and looking for new music.

Do you remember when that was?

That was probably when I was either finishing high-school or going into my first year of college. That was ten years ago, wow! That’s when I started discovering French touch and all.

It’s funny you mention blogs, because it just comes to show how many shifts there have been in the way people discover and access new music in these last couple of decades. My first exposure to Synthwave was probably through Com Truise, who magically appeared in the ‘related videos’ section of a completely unrelated Youtube video.

The youtube algorithm is scarily good sometimes. Sometimes I’m like “Why would you think I would like this??”, and other times I am very pleasantly surprised. That’s basically what I use now, along with Discogs and Mixcloud. WFMU also has some very good shows. I find a lot of new music through that station. Their DJs are all super good at curating new music.

It’s really crazy to think about how all of the different trends in technology shape the way we consume music. I think the Blogspot era was the best, because you could simply find a blog where you trusted the writer. Once you found someone who had more or less the same taste as you, you were set! The other great way to find new music is if any artists that you follow happen to do a DJ set. Generally, they will be full of gold. Even if you find only one artist that you’re interested in, it can lead you to a lot more discoveries through Discogs and whatnot. I totally agree that moving back towards curation is great. I know that Spotify does those curated playlists, but to be completely honest, I don’t even use Spotify. I only use it to look at my artist dashboard.

So the idea of this column is to dive into what makes each artists’ personal vision and idea of retro pop-culture. Do you have any particular pockets of Eighties and Nineties pop-culture that feel especially personal and nostalgia-heavy? In terms of films, TV shows, cartoons …

Now you’ve got me thinking of The Never Ending Story and Willow! Also, although though I didn’t get to watch Bubblegum Crisis when I was growing up, that show is probably the most Synthwave anime out there. I basically grew up with and worshipped Sailor Moon as a kid, from the age of three onwards. I grew up with that and Studio Ghibli films. My artist name was not necessarily meant to reference a particular anime; I’ve just always had this anime weeaboo fascination with Japan as a kid. Nowadays I understand that there are a lot of stereotypes that can go along with that. What started it for me, though, was the street fashion they had in the nineties. Mecha Maiko is also a throwback to the time when I went to Japan when I was 13 and when we went on these tourist attractions where they dress you up as a Maiko.

Thank you so much for sharing ! Do you have any updates you’d like to share with your fans?

Obviously, with the pandemic, everything is a little bit up in the air right now. Currently I have a string of shows in the US that are currently rescheduled for August. If everything goes well, I should be playing with Betamaxx and Parallels and FM Attack. We’re going to be doing a West-Coast tour, hitting Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix. That’s the plan. I also have some things scheduled in Chicago and Brooklyn, but I don’t quite know if those ones are still happening. We’re also releasing the music video for ‘Phones’. I think also am making a cameo in a music video for Michael Oakley. I don’t want to give away too much.

Saying “Aaron Vehling is brains behind Vehlinggo,” is a vast understatement. As the editor, publisher, senior writer, and podcaster behind the stellar Vehlinggo machine, I imagine him as a sort of multi-armed many-faced deity constantly spinning about like an enlightened dervish, synth music, news, and reviews spewing from his fingertips with righteous retro glee.

So it is with “New World,” an album that feels futuristic, yet sparks nostalgia. An album that revisits the old disco-dreamwave proving grounds of FM Attacks’ debut “Dreamatic” through present rose-colored synthpop lenses, then looks to the future with the cold uncertainty of newwave and darkwave aesthetics.

In this way, “New World” feels a lot like a journey through genres. Some artists trying this feat may end up with an album feeling disjointed, but each seamlessly intertwined track flows perfectly into the next for Ward. Of course, as with all of the FM Attack catalog, every cut is also masterfully produced. The result is an album reminiscent of his previous work, but ever marching forward – pushing the boundaries of what synth music can and should be.

Turning 10 this year, Ward’s debut “Dreamatic” disco sound is instantly apparent on the first half of the album, especially in ‘Let You Go,’ ‘Ultraviolet,’ and ‘My Life.’ However, these early half cuts don’t simply rehash anything and are steeped in their own synthwave and synthpop vibes that present a more mature arrangement. Mecha Maiko lends her vocals for “Stranger” in this first half as well, making a lamenting statement piece everyone should really sit down and absorb.

The tonality of the album then shifts with ‘Cosmic Dance’ – a more cinematic interlude track reminiscent of Tangerine Dream.

The rest of the album dives into the newwave and darkwave deep end with three tracks featuring Blake Voss of Vandal Moon – an artists out now on Ward’s own Starfield Music record label.

Each of these tracks really work well, instantly conjuring images of The Cure and New Order but with a lighter, more synthesized feel. FM Attack’s signature uplifting sound keeps these tracks from getting too dark or depressing, creating an incredibly interesting nostalgic blend of dreamwave and darkwave which I would love to hear explored more as an entire genre.

Most readers will recognise you from you from your work with Dead Astronauts. Having left the band back in 2016, can you give us a quick rundown of what you’ve been up to, leading up to this album release?

For the last two years that I was in Dead Astronauts, I really wanted to start doing a solo project because there were a lot of ideas that I would bring to Jared that weren’t quite ‘dark’ enough for the band; they simply didn’t suit the sound quite so well. I was quite passionate about some of these ideas and I wanted to hold on to them and do something with them. I’ve been sitting on a few songs for a long time: I had been working on some of the songs since 2014. I’ve been putting these tracks on the backburner, I didn’t really have too much time to work on it. At the end of 2016, after we had released Arms of Night, I decided that I really needed to take some time, sort out all of the stuff that I had been working on and haven’t been able to do, not worrying about a particular brand or ‘identity’ that already exists. I wanted these songs to be their own ‘thing’, separate from Dead Astronauts. I guess that’s how I would link it. There’s still a lot of sounds that I would use in Dead Astronauts like certain drum samples and there’s obviously a crossover inspiration, but it basically turned into something that is simultaneously a little more ‘danceable’ but also more experimental, borrowing from a wider set of inspirations.

Given that some of these first pieces stemmed from ideas that weren’t quite ‘dark’ enough for Dead Astronauts, would it be fair to consider Mecha Maiko as ‘lighter’ from a tonal standpoint?

The songs aren’t all necessarily rejects but rather pieces that I wanted to keep in a certain direction. I’d say it’s a combination of those two things. It was either too glittery and poppy for Dead Astronauts or it was simply that I just wanted my vocals on it. Being in a band, you make a lot of compromises. Jared and I both had things that we were very firm with. For some tracks, it just didn’t make sense to release it as a Dead Astronauts track if it was really only me.

Your new moniker alludes to the title of Maiko, a young Geiko (Geisha) in training. Why choose the title of a young entertainment still in training?

It’s a good question. ‘Maiko’ basically translates to ‘dancing child’. I think when I was younger, back when I was a full-blown weaboo obsessed with Japanese culture, it seems quite sad to me that once you become a full-on Geiko, you would have to dress in much darker, subdued colours. For me, the clothing and ornaments that the Maiko would wear was what initially attracted me to them. But then I learned that they have to go through very rigorous training schedules, so they’re working very hard at this pivotal point of their life. There’s a lot of changes happening, and they’re thrust into this completely different world of femininity and rigid rules, a sort of ‘sisterhood’. At the same time, there might be a lot of emotional, personal development during those years. They also look so cute and beautiful, and the vibrancy of that was really interesting to me. They look cute but there’s a lot of shit going on there! [Laugh]

You also touch upon some heavier, more personal subject matter as well with this record. Was this a conscious link you made with the name you chose for the project?

I think that whenever I would write lyrics, they would end up being a little bit more confessional, whereas Jared from Dead Astronauts had a particular atmosphere that he was trying to portray. It sometimes goes in that direction when I write songs, and it’s nice, but at the same time I’m not afraid to directly refer to myself in a song or make it more emotional, tie it to my real life. That was something I didn’t necessarily get to do as much, except with songs like ‘Sea Legs’, where Jared was totally cool with me going full out. I think that when I first started doing my solo project, it was really an excuse to make fun music, but that’s not all there is, there’s this dichotomy of music and life that I want to portray.

So you’re saying that Mecha Maiko refers to your own self as opposed to a ‘persona’.

I think there’s a little bit of myself and a little bit of this creation as well. The name really had to do with opposing notions and blending them together to get this new thing. On one hand there is modesty, femininity and youthfulness, and on the other hand there’s brute strength, dominance and immortality. It’s interrupting historical, idealized notions of femininity, but with a retrofuturistic twist. As much as I do like the image of an actual robotic, colossal Maiko terrorizing the place, it’s also just a cool name, conceptually.

From the album art down to the lyrics, the notion of femininity is omnipresent on the record. You’ve also mentioned that everyone involved in the album’s creation is female. Was this a conscious effort from the start?

I think so. When I first started, I originally intended to make every track a collaboration with a different female artist and get them to do remixes. I eventually fell into the ‘collab trap’ where you either start a bunch of things and not really hear back from people or get people who are responsive but eventually get overwhelmed by the work. I was sympathetic to that; it happens to me too. At first I wanted it to be an all-female production, though that is not to say I don’t love Slade of Crying Vessel, who did an amazing job mastering the album. Then there’s obviously the label, which is run by Ten, another cool dude. It’s not that I’m trying to avoid using guys, I just thought it would be cool to have that as a ‘fun fact’ about the album, because synthwave and electronic music is pretty male-dominated; if women are involved, it’s a common tendency to think that they’re just singers. I did call upon Femmepop and Dana Jean Phoenix to handle the lead vocals, but they also were involved in the songwriting process, which is equally important.

Would you say that women are properly represented in the whole wave of 80s’ retro music revival?

It’s really hard to say. That relates to a lot of things in terms of what the role of the woman is. It has to do with art, film and a lot of stuff beyond the actual music. I don’t know. It’s such a difficult question because I can only speak for what I’ve seen, and I might not necessarily dig into every Synthwave act to find out what the person behind the music looks like. For the most part, the imagery and the vibe that is evoked is very masculine because it’s usually coming from eighties horror or action films. I think that if you do see women in Vaporwave and Synthwave, it’s usually in the eighties aerobics or ‘mall rat’ kind of character. I think it is hard to think of all of these masculine sort of things and not think of women as a sort of ‘accessory’ to that. With that being said, I also think it’s a world of fiction, just as much as Mecha Maiko is. As to whether women who are making music are getting enough representation, I only know a few female artists that are really popular within the scene, and I don’t know if it’s just because music production seems to be something that men are more encouraged to do or if that’s just how we justify seeing a smaller proportion of women. Still, I see a lot of female synth acts performing in Toronto so there might be something else at play.

Having graduated from a Sound Engineering school, I was surprised to meet so many female live sound engineers during my stay in Toronto, given that women were so blatantly underrepresented in my school. How did you first get into sound production?

I had always been making music with my uncles’ old keyboard that he lent me, that I never gave back and that I still have right next to me [Laugh]. It was always something that I was doing for fun. I had a really hard time sitting down to watch TV or do something where I wasn’t actively creating something. It was a habit that I got into. In terms of actively seeking music production, that happened in the last couple of years of high-school, when I was really inspired by the Valerie Collective and PNAU. I was really into house-y electronic music back then. The second I went on Soundcloud, I had all of these producers contacting me, wanting me to sing for them. It kind of became annoying after a while, because I felt like I was working so much with other people that I didn’t get to work on my own production skills. When I joined Dead Astronauts, Jared had less production experience than me, so I ended up being the lead producer. I was a really good opportunity to take the time and hone those skills. Still, I’m not the best producer, I’m still learning and I still don’t work in a very technical way, the way I make music isn’t traditional at all. I guess it doesn’t really matter how you do it, everyone does things differently.

I understand that you come from a visual background, namely in photography and photo retouching. How does your music output and your visual background relate to one another? Do you have any specific visuals in mind when writing or do you keep both aspects separate?

That’s a really good question. I guess they’re two different sides of myself. There are times when I’m interested creating something that’s beautiful, but other times it’s less about the visuals of an image and more about the things that the subject represents, on a social and cultural perspective. With Mecha Maiko I guess it’s more about looking at a certain topic or theme from a wider perspective, even though a lot of it is me telling a story. In terms of visuals when I produce, it usually comes back to a feeling. I think there’s so many different things that I admire about both forms that it would be really difficult for me to pursue one or the other. They make up for different parts and energies.

Did you have a general feeling of what the album art would be like when you were writing the songs?

I gave some pretty detailed ideas about how I wanted it to look. When I started Mecha Maiko, I saw it as being something really bright, with a lot of pink and colors and patterns that you might see with makeup, kimono and cherry blossoms, but also with some red, a strong color that can also evoke blood. I really wanted a spilt bottle of nail polish in there, for instance. It’s both beautiful but also ominous and sickly sweet. When I first described what the room should look like, I wanted it to be messy and for it to look like the girl in the room was running away, which didn’t necessarily come through, though the chaos is there.

What is next for Mecha Maiko? I hear you may have some live shows planned in the future.

Indeed. It’s really intimidating going from a recording artist to trying to figure out how to do a nice, fun live show. Holly from Parallels has invited me to do a show with her at House of Targ in Ottawa in May and I may be doing a show with Dana Jean Phoenix at Handlebar in Toronto sometime around August or September. I’m working on my live performance setup right now actually. I’ve never sung onstage in front of anybody before, so I’m going to have to learn how to do that. In other news, I also have a remix EP that I have some friends working on. It’s gonna have some cool folks on there, some that people probably haven’t heard of yet. They don’t all do Synthwave but I dig their stuff.

Last question: can you name one of your favorite albums, movies and books?

One of my favorite recent albums would be Our Love by Caribou. The album really stuck to me when it came out. Joli Mai by Daphni is really good too. I basically have a huge Dan Snaith crush, so that’s why.
Movie-wise, I’d say Pan’s Labyrinth.
Book-wise, I’ll go for Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay.

While this is first and foremost a synthwave record, the way that it blends those familiar nostalgic sounds with the darkness and atmosphere of a group like Purity Ring and the ethereal pop sensibilities of an artist like How to Dress Well or Banks makes for a haunting pop album. Mad But Soft’s opening track “Cold Hard Ground” wastes no time in orienting listeners to Stewart’s sound. For reference, you don’t hear a single non-pad synth for nearly a minute. You don’t hear drums for nearly two. Instead, you are enveloped by the texture of vocals and pads blending, with the delay and reverb-laden vocals forming a similar sonic texture to the droning, washed out synth that lays beneath it. This is an atmospheric track welcoming listeners to an atmospheric album.

Follow-up track “Electric Heat” is noticeably more upbeat, but doesn’t shy away from the brooding and emotionally vulnerable tone that has been established, all while the catchy refrain of “Can you feel my heartbeat?” echoes. The tone of this album is unique. In some respects it has the kind of emotional rawness exhibited on such classics as Trevor Something Does Not Exist, but with a humbler and less cynical perspective. At the heart of both is the sound of heartache. In a lot of ways, the title Mad But Soft is the perfect name for it. This is an emotionally driven record that doesn’t shy away from its own playful spirit. The titular track follows suit by being musically high energy and dance-oriented while the vocals stay melancholy and dreamy.

“Cold”, with its Dana Jean Phoenix feature, is the closest the album gets to standard synthwave, but the strong sense of melody in the chorus keeps it from sounding stale. “Bike Night” slows things back down and serves as one of the best “headphones songs” on the album. It just envelopes the listener in a way that exemplifies the parts of this album that so effectively inspire chills. Closing out the album is the back to back to back creative and experimental wave of songs “Contract”, “False Memories”, and “Auto Fire”, with “Auto Fire” being the best song on the album. In these tracks, the album opts for its strangest synths and its most spaced-out atmospheres, and on “Auto Fire”, the emotional strike of the album is at its high point, and only rivaled by how endlessly catchy the vocal melodies at the center are.  

If you are an exclusive fan of darker or more concept-oriented synthwave, this might be hard to get into. The same goes for people who tend to avoid artists that really drench themselves in delay and reverb. For everyone else, and especially for people who like distinctive synthwave that opts to be something different and something authentic, this is going to be a melancholic, catchy, and unique album that will deserve multiple spins. There is a lot to love on nearly every track and it would be shocking if this didn’t wind up on an end-of-year list.
