With Bandcamp Fridays gaining bigger traction every month and most countries growing rife with promising hopes of live concerts making a comeback, it seems like this fruitful month is but a taste of the glorious rejuvenated summer months to come. This past month saw the return of Retrowave titans Mitch Murder and Timecop1983, along with the long-awaited release of Makeup and Vanity’s ‘Heart of Batman’ Soundtrack on Streaming platforms. Although we’ve yet to hear of a successor to 2018’s Descend, Emil Rottmayer is an artist who obviously values consistency over quantity. With its three tracks clocking barely over the 11 minute mark, Deflection, whilst devoid of any real surprises for those familiar with the artist, is a release worth every single minute of your time. With his streamlined visual and sonic aesthetic, Emil Rottmayer taps into a distinct and deeply evocative strain of retro nostalgia that is paradoxically unique yet familiar.
