Stockholm-based Midnight Danger is back from the dead with the devilish sophomore release, “Chapter 2: Endless Nightmare!”

It’s been two long years since Midnight Danger released his screaming full length debut album “Malignant Force.” Since then, Midnight Danger has fine-tuned his sound like a creature of the night sharpens its fangs. His latest release, “Chapter 2: Endless Nightmare” is an intense journey back from the abyss with dark driving synth bass lines, beefy riffs, and fantastic production. Featuring a slew of hellish synth metal and darksynth, Midnight Danger is be perfect for fans of Dance With The Dead, Volkor X, or Elay Arson.

“Malignant Force,” Midnight Danger’s first album, definitely had its roots in traditional outrun and synthwave, as well as a blend of 80s rock. You can hear it in the bpm and synth tempos, the fantastic melodies utilizing higher pitched synths, the crooning 80s hair metal references, and the retro stab percussion effects (there’s a perfect example at 2:22 in ‘Adrenaline Burst.’)

Of course, layered in with that were minor key synth lines and darksynth inspired heavy bass lines too. So, because of its foundation, “Malignant Force” always felt like a blend of synthwave and outrun with darksynth instead of being full-on pedal to the metal graveyard at midnight darksynth. It was an exploration of the young teenage girl that gets murdered in the first act – not the the sigil covered Necronomicon surrounded by corpese in the third.

A New Deviant Direction

This is where “Chapter 2: Endless Nightmare” changes things up, improving on an already radical sound. This album is a BEAST with intensity turned up to 11 and the darkness factor cranked up too. It punches out some fantastically catchy and fierce tracks left and right. Even though there are still retro influences and synthwave tracks, the this album definitely falls more in the darksynth category than outrun. The production has been polished, and Midnight Danger’s sound swells with a new cinematic quality too.

The style of the synth metal on Midnight Danger’s “Chapter 2: Endless Nightmare,” has even changed a bit too – from hair metal and 80s glam to Iron Maiden esque heavy metal, taking the guitar influences to the darkside of the grave. (Even the album art looks a little like Eddie the Head!)

Altogether, this second offering from Midnight Danger really shows an artist refining their craft. All of the outstanding elements from the first album are here, but infused with a new sense of wicked ferocity and determination – just like a corpse, rising from the dead, hell bent on revenge.

This melancholic masterpiece perfectly embodies the aesthetic of driving long, twisting roads at night. A return to form, “Night Drive” is yet another expertly produced album from the one and only Timecop1983.

Filling a niche desperately lacking in the synthwave scene, DJ Ten has returned with an intense blend of retro and hip-hop, resulting in some of the most interesting beats we’ve heard all year. This synthesized trip hop breakbeat vaportrap is innovative and perfectly produced.

“Kids” stands above the rest this year – not simply as a musical work, but more importantly as a much needed social commentary. Cutting directly to the heart of what makes nostalgia such a powerful emotion, this album is a lyrical masterpiece.

Check out Dance With The Dead’s new album, “Loved to Death” here!

Cold air from entrance door bites at the back of my neck and soon dissipates as I ascend a short staircase to the main floor of the “Big Room Bar.” The brewery-district venue has a partnership with the local alternative station, CD102.5, but it’s the first time I’ve attended a show here. The “Big Room Bar” is, in fact, deceptively big – but that’s hard to discern with so many bodies packed in so tight. The show hasn’t yet begun, and already the main room is nearing at least 75% capacity.

The attendance is a great surprise for a Wednesday night synth-metal show. Ohio is often overlooked by artists on tour and I’m pleased to see the number of fans here showing their support. One lone bartender furiously works the bar – the poor bastard – it’s clear that not even the venue was expecting such a turnout.

Of course, they’ve never dealt with Dance With The Dead or Daniel Deluxe.

I meet with the tour manager and step into the green room to meet Justin and Tony of DWTD and Daniel of Daniel Deluxe. Their mood is very relaxed as they sip on a few beers, readying for the show. Tony looks up, guitar in hand, and introduces himself. While we chat he continues to practice almost subconsciously – not unlike Skwisgaar from Metalocalypse. I begin our small interview before the show.

How has the tour has been so far?

“It’s been awesome man – it’s been great. We’re at the halfway point right now,” says Tony. Justin nods and pipes up, “I feel like our tours always go by pretty fast.”

Tony relates that it’s Daniels first time to the states. I ask him how he’s liked it so far and he gives it a good to mixed review.

“So far,” Daniel says with a laugh, “the most surprising thing was how cheap our sodas are!”

So, you’ve been touring a new album, “Loved to Death,” How do you feel about the reception of the new album?

“It’s the most energetic records we’ve put out and written, one of the hardest. We’re really proud of it. Sometimes we can pump out songs pretty fast, but with this one we took our time and dissected every part of the song until we got what we thought was perfection. We’re stoked on it, we’re touring for it – and so far we’ve had great feedback!”

“Loved to Death” is one of your most intense albums so far – how was your production different between this album and your previous?

“We put in a lot of time for this record. We wanted to make sure the record slammed into fifth gear and took the listener on a journey.”

Do you plan on getting heavier over time? What’s next in the Dance with the Dead sound?

“We’re not sure yet… but we’re always exploring for new inspiration so we shall see!”

The synthwave and darksynth scenes have been steadily growing over the past few years – do you think the genres are getting to big for their own boots, or do you think it still has room to grow?

“I think there’s still room to grow and it should be interesting to see where it’s at in the next year or so.”

How has the tour been so far? What are you favorite highlights or conversely, some of the more difficult moments?

“Tour has been great so far. Some of the highlights are playing places we’ve never been to and meeting and making new fans. Difficulty’s would be dealing with Van and trailer issues. Those are never fun…”

(After the show) How did you like the Columbus crowd?

“We didn’t know what to expect since it was our first time but the crowd and energy was great! Looking forward to coming back.”

I notice Daniel has exited behind me to start the show, so I thank them for their time and make my exit to take some photos.

Daniel Deluxe puts on one hell of a show. He mixes his tracks together in a deft manner – subtly changing the tracks to amazing effect. His darksynth sound is deep and raw enough to get even the metal heads in the audience head banging.

Too soon, his set is over – and Dance With The Dead takes the stage. As they do so some curtains are lifted, revealing two massive skulls that blast neon green light into the audience. The crowd rushes forward and soon it becomes difficult to get photos with the erratic mix of head banging and dancing going on. They absolutely tear up their sound – hitting every note with an expert flourish. Often they switch between keyboard and guitar.

I had specifically chosen not to listen to their new album beforehand, and I’m greatly surprised by the evolution of their sound into heavier, darker territory. Vocal stabs from horror movies punctuate the end of tracks, and as soon as it began the show is over. The audience screams for an encore before they’ve left the stage – and they return quickly with three full final tracks.

This could be a scene from either the beginning or the end of the world.

A club that is ethereal, church-like. Bad memories. Meeting the noise and a stranger, become confused to which is which in the darkness. Conjured from the cauldron of imagination to realisation, a confused state, conscious, just, speech slurred, eyes crossed against one another. A room of bad complexions and cheap smelling perfume.

Dance With The Dead take you on a journey through mutilated guitar riffs, pounding hard rocks drums, eerie spine tingling synths.

At times the soundtrack to an 80’s horror movie, as if scored for the entire catalogue of Stephen king’s work with a hair-rock aesthetic.

Grinding menacing arpegiators, always pushing you on-wards work both with and against the slick guitar licks to create a dangerous and unique dynamic. A sound that creates a constant rising friction, but rather than estrange it excites, drawing you deeper and deeper into their sound.

Be warned, the possible side effects from listening to this album are (minor complications) including double or blurred vision (for a few days), burning, stinging, ear drums, disorientation, euphoric tension, and pounding agitated restless heartbeat.

Hear the album right here:

The devilish duo Dance With The Dead are being resurrected back into the spotlight with the release of “B-Sides: Volume 1.” Although this album is comprised of various unreleased and compilation tracks, it is quickly shaping up to be a truly fiendish fan favorite.

On a twitter post, the Orange County based producers simply promoted the album as “Tons of music that never made it onto our records!” However, “B-Sides” is transcending it’s own title. B-sides are usually known for content not good enough to make the A-side cut, but here we have a collection of excellent tracks blended expertly together to form a cohesive whole – something not usually seen in a collection of unreleased material. Were talking grade A premium zombie killing music folks!

In spite of the album’s cohesiveness, the mix of songs still leans towards eclectic. “B-Sides: Volume 1” ranges from tracks comprised of an odd mix of power and speed metal (sans the big hair) to the more familiar mix of diabolic, always surprisingly danceable synthwave.

“B-Sides: Volume 1” feels like it’s melodies were ripped straight from the head spinning original Exorcist and piped through a duo of synthesizer and electric guitar. Tracks like this would be just as fit as the soundtrack to Castlevania as to a dancefloor – an odd combination where it’s easy to miss the mark, and Dance With The Dead nails it. The crisp production on this album will have metalheads and darksynth fans rising from their graves to rave together.

The standout tracks on this album seem to be “Banshee,” “Entity,” “Blood Moon,” “Venom,” “The Man Who Made A Monster” and of course the bangin’ climax at the end of “The Awakening.” That’s over a third of the album that are must-listens for any fans of darkwave. With tracks like this hiding in the attic, we can only wonder with excitement whats coming next from Dance With The Dead!

What inspired you to create a documentary about the synthwave scene?

I get this question lately a lot, I assume people find it weird to do a documentary about a niche underground movement, but it just came very naturally to me. I’ve always been interested in music, I played (very badly) guitar when I was a teenager, and I grew up with the 90s MTV, my own visual universe it’s heavily influenced by music videos narrative. My previous documentary titled “Trovadores” (“Trobadours” in english) was a portrait of the underground figure in it’s relationship with its own town. So for me, it’s kind of a natural path to follow.

But for synthwave, it just came by surprise. Three years ago, Ricardo Baeza, a street photographer friend of mine send me a track for putting in a promo I was doing for his “Urbacide” project. I click on the first link and I hear this intro from Cobra (the movie) when Cobretti enters the supermarket and say “I don’t deal with psychos, I put them away”. Then I listen to this cheesy synths and look at the title of the video: “Cobretti” – 80s Stallone. I was like WTF is that? As a 90s grunge guy I felt pure rejection towards it, but as a filmmaker the visuals kept my attention. I didn’t pay too much attention then, but I was at that time working on a screenplay for a feature film, i needed to change the focus, and music is very important for me when I’m writing, it puts you in some particular mood. So a few days later I went back to 80s stallone and related videos, and I started to build a playlist to write along. After two weeks I was sold to this music.

But as filmmaker, what I really found interesting, was the lack of documentation. Three years ago you googled “synthwave” and there was almost nothing to look for in terms of “story”, blank page. And I looked at the number of plays on youtube, bandcamp and so much comments and engagement in the community, that I thought it was more than just a deep web revival trend. And so much mystery and not knowing anything about the artists (faceless, no interviews on video, no pics, etc…) had more appealing to me. I started to look closely to it and tried to document myself. So I started to email some artists, just in case, and three years later here we are.

Who was the first synthwave artist you followed?

Dance with the Dead, MN84 and 80s Stallone.

What is your favorite synthwave album?

It’s complicated to just pick one, but it’ll probably be “Turbulence” from MN84, as it was the first synthwave album that really grab my attention as a whole. I used to listen a lot in my car and it definitely was a turning point for me in really paying attention to this music seriously. Another of my favs are “Secret diary” by College, “Near Dark” by DWTD and “Calico Noir” by OGRE.

The list of artists you are interviewing is quite expansive. I’m sure it becomes easier and easier to get interviews as the project gains steam, but was it difficult at first?

We’re very proud about our lineup. But at the beginning it was really hard to get them because of the aversion some of them have to media. They prefer to let the music talk, and I understand that’s a huge part of the scene personality, the kind of “anonymous” thing. So I had to build some trust, some confidence. I was very concerned to be considered as a newcomer that wanted to cannibalize their work. I really love this music, I just want to make the world more aware of it. But for the most part, all the artists have been very open, honest, respectful to our idea and have quickly engaged in the project. I’m very thankful for that.

Of course, after the first lineup announcement, it became much easier to involve more artists.

Is this your first time creating a documentary?

No, it’s my second feature documentary. My previous feature documentary titled “Trovadores” (“Trobadours” in english) was a portrait of the underground figure in it’s relationship with its own town. https://youtu.be/RZH63Iv4NkE

Rise of the Synths appears to be a highly stylized experience, blending narrative and documentary. Why choose to create a documentary in this way?

I just don’t like regular on-camera interview types of documentaries. If you’re doing some kind of journalistic approach it’s fine and it’s a safe path to follow. But I don’t do that. I like to try to bring out the inner world of the artists I’m documenting. And sometimes you just need to watch and let it roll. The fiction part came also very naturally. I felt the film needed this cinematic approach and some kind of element that serve as nexus between all of the artists and their own worlds and places. We needed to find a common semantic to all of them, regardless of the language they speak. This music is inspired by late 70s and 80s pop culture, so an anti-hero was an obvious choice. A tough guy, lonely, with a mission: so we created the “Synth Rider” character, the watcher of the Master’s legacy. He’s a metaphor of the grassroot movement, created naturally over a decade through the internet.

Will any retro films be influencing the look of the Rise of the Synths? Which ones?

The list would be endless. “Thief”, “Blade Runner”, “Mad Max”, “Driver”, “Live and die in L.A.”, “The hitcher”, to name a few. But if I had to pick visually one of my main influences for this documentary, I’ll say a mix of Michael Mann and Tony Scott.

The perks on the Kickstarter are awesome! If you were a fan, and not a director, what perk would you sign up for?

“Master” is an amazing perk. If I had to go lower, “Connor” and “Cobretti” are some of my favs. But if I had to pick one, and I was just a fan, I’ll say: wait to see the artists bundles of your favorite artists in our lineup, it’s going to be a very unique thing, a rare opportunity to grab some of their stuff. one of the things I love about this documentary is that the artists are so engaged in the making, they know how hard it’s been for us to try to fund it, and they’re helping us all the way they can. And they’re offering some amazing one-time only things, that will probably will never be able to get otherwise. We have for example two artists that are going to offer their last copy of one of their albums (signed), something that they own because there’s no other physical copy in the world. We’re very lucky.

As the Graphic Novel Editor at NRW, I have to ask. What will the comic book perk entail?

We want to make a very unique thing. it’s on development, but basically it’s the Synth Rider’s story; his adventures in an epic 80s world, protecting the Master’s legacy.

We have been lucky enough to work with David Lopez (who has worked in DC and Marvel) on the draws for the Synth Rider’s poster we’re offering in the perks. We want to continue to work with him in the comic book, and he proposed a suitable narrator, but it’s too early to say more about this. But as all thing involved in this project, we want this to kick ass.

Hard to say, I’m just a filmmaker who fell in love with this music. So, as a filmmaker what I could say, is that a lot of this composers are talented to score feature films. I’ll love to get more scores like “Drive”, “Maniac” “Lost River” or “It follows”. But as a scene, I don’t know, it has evolved a lot since it started, you can hardly keep up with so many new music being uploaded everyday, and the quality rise is unquestionable. I’ll say that some of these bands (that put vocals in their music) could reach some mainstream attention, but I doubt it’ll become mainstream as a whole. It’s a weird music for this modern world, and that’s part of its appeal. I’ll love to hear more of this on the radio, but I don’t see it happening any time soon. But just as a note, some months ago I was shooting a video for an urban art festival, and one of the painters was listening to “Lazerhawk”, I just went to him and said: “Do you like synthwave?”, and he look at me like “wtf are you talking about?”, “it’s Lazerhawk”, I said, and he goes: “Oh, I don’t know the name, I found it in youtube. I just fucking love this shit.”. So I feel it’s reaching far away now.

And it’s just a teaser shoot on what we had at our reach, so expect something incredible if we make it happen with an adequate funding. This music is passion, there’s no middle point: you love it or you hate it. If you love it, don’t overthink: help us to make it happen, because otherwise a project like this one it’s hardly going to happen anytime soon.

If I had to put something on the table: there’s some iconic names from the late 70s and the 80s that are aware of the project and are willing to be involved if the film is fully funded and goes in production. For a lot of reasons we can’t unveil the names, but you should trust us if I said: you’ll not be disappointed. If people knew, we’ll probably be 50% funded at this point.

We think this scene and this music, and it’s relationship with film (it all comes together) is something deep that deserves more attention. Artists should be labeled as artists, composers, not like a 80s parody jokes. This music from a filmmaking point of view is a blessing. The world deserves to know that, and its real history. In the late 70s some folks created the seed that decades later came to that sound.

DANCE WITH THE DEAD – The Shape

Dance with the Dead showed up on the radar in 2013 with their solid debut album titled “Out of Body” and quickly became regular guest of many Retrowave playlists. It was a good mix of 80s pastiches with a dark twist. Dark synthwave just sort of started forming as a subgenre and this release perfectly complemented Lazerhawk’s “Skull and Shark” LP released around the same time.

Fast forward to 2016 and DWTD have several releases behind them and what seems a frenzied following. Dark synthwave is booming, even spawning a couple of small specialized live festivals in Europe. Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, all enjoy cult status and are very often a starting point for all the newcomers to synthwave.

The basic formula – faster tempo, minor keys and distorted arpeggiated synths – is now generally known to all and has truly helped to carve out a strong niche. The Shape alone has generated incredible buzz from raving fans, the kind that orthodox synthwave producers can still only dream of.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:320px;height:100px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-6563195076446638"
     data-ad-slot="3569674507"></ins>

In fact, there seems to be a trend developing where dark synthwave acts no longer really list themselves as anything retro, synthwave, 80s and such. For example, Carpenter Brut simply states “electro” on their Facebook page and DwtD use different tags on their Bandcamp but none specifically “retrowave” related.

It’s telling that the artists enjoying greatest attention are the ones seemingly doing away with ties to the retrosynth labels – but that’s best left for another discussion. Their other common denominator is the big sound and – what used to be just flirting with metal conventions – a full blown love affair with plenty PDAs.

And “The Shape” is full of exactly that. While the debut was plenty more balanced and told a more rounded story, The Shape stays firmly in the territory of “bigger is better” and really doesn’t feature that much of a synth sound. Here, heavy guitar takes center stage and other sounds are more of the Skrillex school than Sellorekt.

Obviously, the intention here is to provide the optimal live show experience (DWTD) for all those ex metal heads who sometimes seem to make up the majority of the fans of darker Synthwave.

data-ad-slot="3569674507"></ins>

And nothing wrong with that, in fact I, otherwise nonplussed by Carpenter Brut’s stuff when listened at home, had quite a lot of fun seeing them live recently. Their music finally clicked with me and made much more sense with a proper light show, a cleverly edited video background and yes, big motherfucking speakers.

I’m guessing DWTD dudes are going with the same intent as unfortunately, otherwise their album really doesn’t quite hit the mark. Stripped of much what made their debut great – melodic variety and the retro feel – “The Shape” is best enjoyed as a dance record in a club performed live.

Listening at home, the repetitions and production veering on the one dimensional side become a little too obvious and none of the track really transcends the filler status. Probably works well as a good workout or driving album though.

That’s not to say the album is not okay, it’s just not great. The high-water mark of the album comes in the middle with Screams and Whispers, the track that stands out with its sheer energy and an epic main motif.

It’s immediately followed by Adrift, an outlier on the album and the only respite from the sense-devouring sound of the rest of the album. It’s really full of emotion and longing and you simply can’t help but wish we had another pit stop like this on the album (minus the mega cheesy guitar solo).

All in all, The Shape will satisfy the hardcore fans and the fun-seeking male 20-something college students not really looking for sophistication. For the rest of us, the crescendo-to-the-crescendo approach could be a little too much and the main feeling will be of a déjà vu.

6.5/10
