2017 was a very trying time and also a very positive time for Retrowave. Here are The Biggest Moments for Retrowave in 2017.

Death Note Includes Plenty of Synth in it’s Soundtrack!

Jordan F scored two big placements in this movies soundtrack and in the movie itself. A big win!

Lazerhawk Finally Releases Album!

It was a lengthy wait, but the wait was certainly worth the final product. A lot of fans in the scene have been waiting for this album for close to 4 years years. An absolutely smashing album from beginning to end.

The 2017 Eurovision Song Contest

This image says it all. The background imagery/ animation clearly ties into Retrowave aesthetics. This performance was seen by millions of viewers due to Robin Bengtsson and Eurovisions heavy reach. The song may not be your cup of tea, but the imagery cannot be denied.

Celebrities Start to Discover The Retrowave Movement!

Twitter was an interesting platform this year. Specifically for celebrities as they found a lot of Retrowave via shares and retweets. Wil Wheaton being one of them! 🙂

http://wilwheaton.net/2017/04/apparently-retrowave-is-a-thing-and-its-pretty-awesome/

FM-84 and The Midnight Completely Sell Out in LA!

These guys are truly taking the scene by storm and are doing huge numbers whilst being unsigned. This shows the power of Retrowave and the awesome fans it has. Not to mention their music is both killer!

Mainstream Musicians Start To use Retrowave Inspired Imagery In Their Music Videos and Art.

Like it or not, this year showed how far the Retrowave influence has spread. It may not be the sound just yet, but the imagery is now being implemented in musicians albums and musical projects. It could error a lot more frequently in 2018 as Retrowave continues to spread. Keep your eyes peeled for this madness.

Magic Sword are Featured in the Thor: Ragnarok Trailer.

This was probably the biggest placements for 2017. This was a monster of a movie in terms of outreach and to have Magic Swords music used in the official trailer was MONUMENTAL. Another great achievement for the Retro Lovers.

Retrowave begins to chart in the Billboard Charts!

Magnatron 2.0, AKUMA, The Midnight, Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Sunset Neon, this year proved to be monumental for Retrowave interms of outside recognition. We predict such charting will be more frequent in 2018 as many big releases are planned. What a year!

It seems like everyone is embracing the retro trend, from 90s-style fashion to watching retro-inspired films. Why not consider an 80s film night with your friends?

It seems like everyone is embracing the retro trend, from 90s-style fashion to watching retro-inspired films. Why not consider an 80s film night with your friends? Choose from the likes of The Goonies, Stand by Me, Back to the Future, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Don’t forget the 80s-style snacks like rainbow drops, party rings, and to wash it all down, a glass of your favorite fizzy drink from the SodaStream.

Along with the likes of roller discos and dinner parties, one of the not-so-obvious trends of the 80s was evening classes. Don’t restrict yourself to car maintenance and learning Italian, why not bring your retro learning into the 21st century and consider improving your strategic thinking, candle making, baking, or even learn how to read criminals’ minds with an online forensic psychology course.
It also seems like everyone has been embracing 90s fashion at the music festivals this year. Whether you opt for a 90s-style slip dress or a checkered shirt and a pair of low waisted jeans for a grunge look, the 90s look is still a bang on trend (although let’s just hope the 90s trend of the oversized flower hats doesn’t bloom again!)

One of the coolest ways to say, “I love you” in the 80’s was to make them a mix tape. While not all of us have access to a “ghetto blaster” or a Walkman, they are easy to pick up in secondhand shops and on auction sites. Choose from the 80s and 90s icons like Madonna, Wham!, and Oasis as well as your favorite Retrowave artists who embrace this genre such as VHS Glitch, Daniel Deluxe, and Timecop1983. Don’t forget to nail those renowned 80’s dance routines, too!

A classic thing to do in the 80’s was to throw a dinner party, so why not embrace the retro trend and throw an 80’s themed get-together. Include cult dishes like prawn cocktail, quiche Lorraine, and the classic peach melba — so delicious! Wash it all down with a cheeky glass of Babycham or a snowball.
You gotta roll with it, too! The roller disco was an 80s institution and it is enjoying a comeback. Don your leg warmers and your leotards and get rolling to your favorite tunes. Why not organize one of your own or head to the likes of Carwash London for a retro-inspired night out?

Collecting things was a huge thing in both the 80s and 90s — from trolls to yin and yang jewelry to my little ponies to beanie babies — so why not start or indeed finish a collection of some of the coolest things from the 80s and 90s?

These days we pass the days by playing with our mobile phones, but in the 80s and 90s, not so much. We passed the time making origami paper quizzes, waiting for the phone box to be free so we could make a call, and who could forget trying to nail that all-important Rubik’s cube! What are your favorite memories from the 80s and 90s?

In October 1958, a physicist name William Higinbotham changed the lives of many with his invention of what is believed to be the first ever video game. A simple tennis game, it became quite the hit at the Brookhaven National Laboratory open house.

It was never Higinbotham’s intention to start gaming culture; he had been tasked with creating an exhibit for their open house that would demonstrate their research. It took him only a few days to create his Tennis for Two game, but it was an instant success. The game was never patented, so Sanders Associates was the first company to receive the first patent for a video game, in 1964. Later, Magnavox bought the patent and started producing video game systems in the early 1970s. Their first console, the Odyssey, featured several games, including a very similar tennis game. Nolan Bushnell, president of Atari, would witness a demo of this game and his company would later go on to create Pong – one of the first commercially successful (and commercially available!) computer games.

Fast forward to today, and gaming has gone on to become one of the biggest industries in the world. Worth a staggering $91.5 billion in 2015, this has increased year on year, with a jump of 9.4% from 2014. This ever growing increase can be seen to be coming from new markets such as China, which actually overtook America as the biggest revenue contributor – bringing in US$22.2 billion in 2015 alone.

New technology is also a factor, with more and more people playing games on their mobiles – sparking a whole new wave of gamers. Smartphone and smartwatch revenues were up by 21% in 2015, and tablet revenues also increased by 27%. However, PCs are still the most popular gaming platform in the US.

Despite all this growth, and the advancements in video games which means graphics and user playing experience is better and better, there is still a love affair with vintage gaming – and we’re here to break down the reasons…

Retro Games on Smartphones

As we’ve mentioned, smartphone gaming is on the rise. In 2015 the mobile gaming industry was worth $30.3 billion. When you consider that a mobile game or in-app purchase is, on average, $5 or below, that’s a lot of people contributing to the mobile games market.

Interestingly, the mobile platform is the perfect place to bring out some of our much loved vintage arcade games. In fact, it’s likely that your smartphone is far more powerful than your old console (and certainly more powerful than an old arcade!), which means all of your treasured games still work here. Moreover, there is a whole lot of games that are visually inspired by those golden days – for instance, Pixel Dungeon.

However, you may find some of your favorite games don’t live up to your nostalgic memories, so you may want to download an emulator. An emulator is an app that recreates the software environments of your old console systems – and then you can load game files and play as if you were playing on that console.

There are literally hundreds on the market, so do your research and decide which console you want to emulate. If you want to relive your Game Boy days then you could try John GBC, which is estimated to have had between 1000000 and 5000000 downloads according to Google Play.

play.google.com

Retro Game Consoles in your Bedroom – Still

It seems that many of us still love a bit of actual nostalgia, rather than faking it on a smartphone, and many people are buying and playing old arcade machines and game consoles.

The golden age of the arcade began in the early 1980s, when the number of games doubled between 1980 and 1982. Machines weren’t just reserved for dedicated playing spaces either, they became common in supermarkets, restaurants and stores. During this time, the sale of arcade machines reached $900 million in 1981. By 1982 there were 24,000 full arcades in America, and 1.5 million machines.

Sadly, these numbers have now dropped. However, there are still many arcades that specialize in vintage games where you can go and relive the days of cramped hands and pockets full of change. Also, if you’ve got the cash you can buy a refitted arcade machine and have one in your house – this will set you back about $2000.

  http://www.roadtovr.com/

Hardcore Gamers Still Love Retro Games

Like a star that has risen to fame and fortune, you should never forget your roots, and it seems that hardcore gamers haven’t either and still love retro games. Now, the average age of a gamer today is 31 years old, which means they wouldn’t have even been born in the heyday of the arcades, but they definitely grew up in the age of gaming.

Gaming culture has probably been an integral part of their life, and we all love to relive some of our own personal history. And entertainment brands know that very well – and take steps to honor this personal history. In a poker tournament called PokerStars Caribbean Adventure 2016, which arguably tends to a different type of gamer, an Atari challenge was part of the events. Poker professionals were invited to take part in a challenge to play Centipede, Asteroids and Missile Command, if they got the high score for the day they would win an Atari Flashback console. A good example that gamers will be gamers – even if it’s poker pros, who are supposed to be a different category altogether – whether that is on the poker table, our modern console or an old classic.

twitter.com

Retro Games on Memorabilia

We’re not just still in love with our retro games, we’ve still got the t-shirts too. We’ve already featured the Space Invaders-inspired Fred Perry line, but that’s just one example of many.

RetroGT is a site completely dedicated to retro gaming wear. You can get yourself a PlayStation console key ring, Pikachu caps, sonic t-shirts and more. For the braver amongst us, you can even get a full on Pac Man suit from Oppo Suits, proving that the game is not over, it’s alive and well in your sense of style (maybe). It’s appropriately called “Game not Over.” There’s also an official Pac-Man inspired Moleskine notebook.

polygon.com

Of course, if we start discussing the art, the music and the films inspired by retro video games, this article would never end – Pixels, anyone? Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, as much as it’s great to move forward we’re also very glad that there are still so many signs of people reliving the glory days of computer gaming – or even experiencing them for the first time. When everything was new, ideas were endless and the arcade was your mecca.

Style Wars was the original Graffiti VHS you had to have if you were into the culture and state of mind. Unless you were a toy then, you probably borrowed it from somebody else. See back in the early 80’s, graffiti began to become notorious in New York City. Not because, it was born there, no; graffiti started in Philadelphia. But, because New York City at that time was still the epicenter of art and sub-culture in the United States.

Who knew that so much creativity was bubbling under the surface of abandoned buildings, squats, shooting galleries, pissy gutters, blackouts, illegal tattoo parlors and just utter-desolation and dreary landscapes of New York City.

This film is a favorite of mine. Why? – Because I like graffiti. I like going out and engaging in minor late night bombin’ excursions. No, I’m not a modern day Rembrandt. And I’m far from the modern writers capable of autographing their personal hieroglyphic marks on public and private property with lettering and handstyles so esoteric they resemble magic sigils.

Style Wars shows both the young artists struggling to express themselves through their art, and their points of view on the subject of graffiti, as well as their views of then New York City Mayor Ed Koch, one-armed, now deceased graffiti writer Case/Kase 2, graffiti writer Skeme and his mother, graffiti “villain” Cap, now deceased graffiti writer Dondi, Seen and Shy 147, graffiti documentarian (and co-producer of the film) Henry Chalfant, breakdancer Crazy Legs of Rock Steady Crew, police officers, art critics, subway maintenance workers, as well as several “people on the street”.

This film is a time capsule snapshot of a time that many people have heard wonderful stories about but, few every experienced. When MTA train fares was $.75 and we used tokens before metrocards. This was the time when you couldn’t see a naked wall on a train car or anywhere on the street.
While in preparation for the outlining of a new mixtape, I decided to sit down and reflect on why I love retro-cyberpunk.

You see way back in the day, we had day dreams and fantasies about what the future would be: Flying cars, instant food, hover boards, virtual reality, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, mega-corporations seizing gigantic shares of the private sector, possible World War, Panzer Police, Bōsōzoku Gangs, battle drones, advanced medical technology and dystopian cities; “High Tech and Low Life”.

The dystopian urban environments of the nineteen eighties mutated our expectations for the future, a stark contrast to the sundrenched optimism of the nineteen fifties. Instead of blue skies and robotic maids, it was grey mornings of smog and pollution, rising tides and congested cities collaged with multi-culturalism. Much of what we have now was envisioned however, reality is more streamlined than fantasy. Fantasy was gritty and dark and noir. Analog screens and cables scattered all over the place. Information is god and exchanged over vast distances via satellite dishes and worth more than currency. People living longer and resources dwindling; it’s the time of genetically modified food and designer body mods. Any wish you will and it can be yours.

Cyberpunk: “a subgenre of science fiction in a future setting, noted for its focus on “high tech and low life” aspects of society. It features advanced technology and science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order. Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among artificial intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a future Earth, rather than the far-future settings or galactic vistas found in novels such as Isaac Asimov’s Foundation or Frank Herbert’s Dune. The settings are usually post-industrial dystopias but tend to be marked by extraordinary cultural ferment and the use of technology in ways never anticipated by its creators (“the street finds its own uses for things”). Much of the genre’s atmosphere echoes film noir, and written works in the genre often use techniques from detective fiction.” – Wikipedia

Military power is becoming more and more advanced like a techno-addict. Soon, the modern soldier will rely more on machines than his own wits and resolve; working side by side with drone infantry and remote control aerial support. If it ain’t bought, sold, marketed, reprinted, rebooted or whatever then you’re not in the right place. We are teetering toward the noir worlds of William Gibson, Ridley Scott, Masamune Shirow, Mamoru Oshii, exc. My only regret is that I won’t be a young man when we realize we’re in Night City.

Dick Award, and the Hugo Award. It was Gibson’s debut novel and the beginning of the Sprawl trilogy. The novel tells the story of a washed-up computer hacker hired by a mysterious employer to pull off the ultimate hack. Neuromancer is considered “the archetypal cyberpunk work”.

Blade Runner is the 1982 Neo-Noir Cyberpunk film directed by Ridley Scott, and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. The screenplay, written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, is a modified film adaptation of the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner follows the parallel stories of a blade runner being forced out of retirement to hunt down three replicants (life like androids) who have escaped a mining colony and follows the surviving replicants as they desperately try to find a way to prolong their dwindling life spans by tracing their creation back to the source at the Tyrell Corporation; Leading to the emotional crescendo of an ending. The soundtrack was composed by Vangelis and stands the test of time in visual effects and significance in film history. It’s better than Star Wars.

Cyberpunk 2020, as the name implies, takes place in the year 2020. The game’s default setting is the fictional Night City, an arcology on the west coast of the United States located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The game mechanics are similar to D&D although leaning heavily towards technology and cybernetics, rather than magic.
Hardware is a 1990 British-American post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film directed by Richard Stanley and starring Dylan McDermott. Inspired by a short story in 2000 AD, the film depicts the rampage of a self-repairing robot in a post-apocalyptic slum. My second favorite of the genre, after Blade Runner, rich with all the nostalgic aesthetics of true retro cyberpunk: wastelands, layers of endless cables and wires all over, scrappers, gnarly prosthetics and all of those things that made it possible for low budget projects like Cyborg, Fortress, Nemesis to be made to look like the shattered possible future. One of the best soundtracks on this list.

The film is directed by Tony Maylam and Ian Sharp. In the year 2008, heavy rainfall has flooded large areas of London.

Yes, Love it or Hate it. The classic 1979 Walter Hill classic about New York City gangs during one of the worst times in the city’s history will be turning 36 years old in September. This is not a Retro Review but rather an objective retrospective.

Starring: Michael Beck (Swan), James Remar (Ajax), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), Brian Tyler (Snow), David Harris (Cochise), Tom McKitterick (Cowboy), Terry Michos (Vermin), Marcelino Sanchez (Rembrandt), Deborah Van Valkenburgh (Mercy), Roger Hill (Cyrus), David Patrick Kelly (Luther), Lynne Thigpen (DJ).

Directed by Walter Hill, The Warriors is the story of a group of Brooklyn gang members desperately trying to get home, after being framed for the murder of a prominent gang leader in the Bronx. They are outnumbered in enemy territories. Can they make it home or become another bunch of fatalities to the streets.

The film earned 3.5 million on its opening weekend. However, there were some incidents of violence following screenings prompting advertising to halt on radio, television and the press. Two hundred theaters beefed up security and others just stopped screenings all together after being relieved of any contractual obligations by the studio. Some film critics weren’t really buying into The Warriors. Roger Ebert gave the film two out of four stars in his review for the Chicago Sun Times, “No matter what impression the ads give, this isn’t even remotely intended as an action film. It’s a set piece. It’s a ballet of stylized male violence.” As well, critics from The Washington Post, Newsweek, and Time magazine were among others that gave the film poor reactions. Critics who did enjoy the film included Pauline Kael of The New Yorker who wrote, “The Warriors is a real moviemaker’s movie: it has in visual terms the kind of impact that ‘Rock Around the Clock’ did behind the titles of Blackboard Jungle. The Warriors is like visual rock”. President Reagan even had screenings in Camp David. After a few weeks of no violence, the studio decided to revamp the marketing ad campaign and in its sixth week, The Warriors had grossed $16.4 million, well above its estimated $4 million to $7 million budget making it a profitable success for the studio. But do ticket sales earn you cult classic status?

The passage of time and home video releases and current DVD & Blu-Ray sales have reconfirmed that fans make films cult classics; not directors or actors. In 2015, The Warriors has a Rotten Tomato rating on 94% and is praised by the young and old; an action packed, thriller detailing the violence of 1970’s NYC and the local gangs of the period. At least that’s what they tell you, especially New Yorkers.

Truth is – it’s a very entertaining movie with some quotable lines. Yes it’s stylized and well shot; the action scenes were great (for their time); it was gritty and showcased young anti-heroes. But, so what, it doesn’t make this a believable piece. Why? Well that’s because nostalgia can hype anything up bigger than its normal size… right ladies? The fanboy/man will tell you how amazing the movie is and tell you how his youth was just like that, almost making The Warriors seem more documentary than film. They will bring up memories and neighborhood history and link it to the film, shining a big spotlight on themselves and their golden era. The truth is – The Warriors is more The Avengers than Mean Streets.

First off, let’s start with the Warriors themselves: a ragtag group of less than fifteen members at the most and all handsome enough to grace the cover of subway advert or guest star on Welcome Back Kotter. At the helm is Swan the leader with the perfect hair forever throughout the film. As well his second in command Cochise and his titanium afro that stays on point and stylin’ no matter what. Then there’s Ajax of course with the feathered mane of anti-social behavior. Each member was his own island of cool, perfectly casted to steal the hearts of female audience members. It’s amazing no one has taken their turf yet. I guess they are that good if not the best.

The film begins deep in the Bronx where a massive meeting of all the NYC gangs is taking place at the behest of the enigmCyrus, a VO5 permed huckster in a bathrobe that wishes to unite the gangs under his guidance and seize full control of the city. They’ll take down the cops and ultimately run the streets, “Can you dig it?”… No. No. Allow me to raise my hand here and ask the pimp with no last name some questions. How in the hell was this going to work? Fact #1: This was NYC during the 1970s before cellphone cameras and hotlines and police pretty much had full freedom to give you the wooden shampoo (beating with batons) as they wished, if not worse. Now even if the gangs were able to go up against the cops, they would lose. Example – when Mr. Can You Dig It gets killed [spoiler] did you see the cops having trouble arresting anyone? I didn’t think so. Fact #2: Cyrus never really mentioned the Mafia or the Chinatown gangs or Tongs in his speech. Were they supposed to bend the knee to the runts? How about the Hell’s Angels chapter in the Lower East Side, were they going to join in? No, they wouldn’t; the gangs would ruin their way of living. The gangs would have to take on organized crime on multiple fronts as well the police. And let’s say they succeeded and took over the city. They would have to deal with martial law and possibly military when this hypothetical crime wave becomes a national emergency.

Next question – Why are The Rogues the only gang that actually acts like a gang? They are the only one with one revolver.

Cyrus. He gets shot. Cyrus is dead. Who shot him? The Warriors! How do you know? Well, the guy who was shooting a gun in the midst of like 30 gangs told me The Warriors killed Cyrus. But the Warriors aren’t shooting anyone else. Hey, I’ve never met dude before but, I trust the only guy at the meeting with a smoking gun. Spread the word… These gang members are stupid.

Now our heroes must find a way to get back to Coney Island. They take the subway? Why has no one ever pointed out the fact that The Warriors are supposedly the best of the best of gangs yet; nobody knows how to steal a car and jump on the highway down to the BQE and back home in no time? Hell they have one member who just purchased his first spray paint and takes forever tagging a W on a tombstone.

Without dragging this out here is a summary of other things: The Furies stunk as a crew; they got jacked up by their own bats. The Orphans looked like a troupe of homeless former child actors. The Lizzies were not only hot but, the only game that came close to merc’ing a few of our heroes; too bad the sensitive Warrior ruined the ambush. Mercy was a ratchet Uptown chick that the Warriors kidnapped and she was fine with it; was even willing to have sex in a subway tunnel to Swans disgust; ends up hooking up and wanting to go somewhere else, with her kidnapper. Ajax is a loud mouthed aggressive alpha male, he’s also a rapist; he gets arrested trying to sexually assault Caitlyn Jenner on a park bench halfway into the film.

How was the radio station DJ relaying information that fast? Walkie-talkies don’t have that kind of distance. Unless the crews knew the number to dial on the pay phones to spread the word. If that’s the case, how come the Warriors don’t know about this radio station?

The Riffs were exactly what everybody in the 70’s wanted to be after seeing Bruce Lee. Hell maybe Bruce Leeroy from The Last Dragon is the son of one of the Riffs. Daddy Green was a Riff?

The Climax is the best part. Luther’s Smith & Wesson against Swan and his… switchblade. As our gang of heroes confront The Rogues about their deception, Luther explains to them that he just likes doing those things. He takes aim and fires dead center at Swan standing in front of two Warriors. But apparently Swan has the agility of a cat as he is able to dodge the bullet and throw his switchblade, Shinobi style, into Luther’s hand; obviously splitting the bullet in two because, no Warrior was hit by the revolver round… Swan did this while standing in sand.

Luther cries in pain and is taken away with his Rogues by The Riffs who took forever to learn the truth and obviously drove to Coney Island. The Riff leader praises The Warriors as “Good” and Swan replies, “The Best”. Our movie ends and Joe Walsh sings us out into the sunrise.

– It’s only a movie and an entertaining movie. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, walk away. If you want to see how the actual gangs were in NYC then go watch the documentary “80 Blocks from Tiffany’s” (1979) on youtube. Other than that, this has been an objective retrospective of Walter Hill’s cult classic The Warriors. Stay cool, stay fresh and keep your fingers on the Rewind button.

After being rejected by all of the networks, David Lloyd (writer on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi and Cheers) was approached by Showtime to air his pilot as a series on their new pay for cable network. The premise of a working class family coming to terms and coming together after a sibling comes out of the closet was just the sort of daring television that Showtime was looking for.

It premiered the summer of 1984 and lasted five years. It was the first situational comedy series ever on cable TV; starring: Robert Walden, Paul Regina, Brandon Maggart, Philips Charles Mackenzie, Hallie Todd, and Robin Riker.

The official synopsis of BROTHERS is: Set in south Philadelphia, Brothers centered around the lives and relationships of the Waters brothers; oldest brother Lou (Brandon Maggart), a somewhat uncouth, but well-meaning construction foreman, middle brother Joe (Robert Walden), a retired placekicker for the Philadelphia Eagles and owner of a sports bar called The Point After, and the youngest brother, Cliff (Paul Regina), an aspiring chef.

In the premiere episode, Cliff shocks his family when he runs away from the altar on his wedding day. Instead of getting married, Cliff reveals to his family that he is gay.

The series would go on to deal with issues of sexual identity, love, dating, discrimination, stereotypes exc. But overall it was about people navigating personal relationships.

The series was nominated for numerous Cable ACE awards during its 115 episode run. The only win belonging to Philip Charles Mackenzie for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

This Month In Retro is a monthly article where we look back on the current month as it happened during the 1980’s. Learn, reminisce, and stay retro.

In Film:

Fun fact: I love Loretta Lynn. Really old country might be as far removed synthwave as possible, but I eat that stuff up. March of 1980 gave us the Loretta Lynn biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter starring Sissy Spacek. The film was a huge success that garnered a tremendous amount of critical praise. If you aren’t familiar with Lynn’s music, I strongly encourage you to check out “Fist City”, a song that was banned from radio at the time of its release due to the violence of the lyrics. That’s right, the country song had lyrics deemed too violent for people to hear.

Speaking of Danny Elfman, Forbidden Zone was also released this month. While Danny Elfman is most well known today for his compositions and film scores, he was formerly a member of The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo. The film, which is based on the band’s performances, marks the band’s transition from the earlier baroque/cabaret recordings to their new wave sound.

In Music:

Patti Smith and the MC5 each released one of my all time favorite albums with Horses and Kick Out the Jams. The punk powercouple of Patti Smith and MC5 guitarist Fred Smith got married in March of 1980. Unlike a lot of celebrity / musician relationships, they lasted until Fred Smith’s untimely death in 1994. Interestingly enough, their son is married to Meg White, formerly of the White Stripes.

In Literature:

As a slight change from the typical focus on traditional books, this month I am going to focus on comic book history exclusively. I will be mixing the two in the future. Spider-Man teams up with the Punisher and later prevents him from murdering a drug dealer in Amazing Spider-Man #202. Things got a little more intense over in the DC Universe in Batman Vol. 1 #321. The Joker celebrated his birthday by kidnapping Robin, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, and Catwoman and creating what he calls the “Victim-Go-Round”. It is all of a sudden hitting me why there needs to be a future article on retro comics. Anyway, the caped crusader ends up saving his friends (of course). The issue is also notable for being the first instance of what would become a recurring Joker motif of a “Bang” flag coming out of a gun, only to be followed an actual gunshot. That sounds convoluted; just look at the picture.

In Television:

In 1977 the world was treated to the television film My Mom’s Having a Baby. Three years later, in March of 1980, the world was given its sequel, a film with a title unrivaled since. I am talking about the television film Where Do Teenagers Come From? It actually received a good degree of criticism for depicting sex education during daytime programming hours. How scandalous.

In Sports:

On March 14, 1980 twenty-two members of the United States Olympic team died in a plane crash. Also, due to the conflict between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan, U.S. President Jimmy Carter announced a boycott of the Moscow Olympics.
