April 8th saw the release of the new Makeup and Vanity set record, entitled Wilderness. It’s the tenth full length album from Nashville based electronic artist, Matthew Pusti and has been released via Telefuture Records.

For anyone who is aware of Makeup and vanity set, you will already be familiar with his gift for creating vast and exceptional pieces of music. His experience and obvious affiliation with his sound helps him carve out vivid and beautifully rich sounding tracks and Wilderness is no exception. Absorbing a record of this enormity is not always an easy feet and multiple listens are often required in order to really get to grips with the songs. Yet shortly after first listening to Wilderness, I was left dumbfounded by how effortlessly I made it through the albums massive 1 hour and twenty one minute running time and just how instantly connected I felt to it afterwards.

I feel Wilderness is more than just an album, its a prodigious musical journey that is searching for answers and although melancholic at times,is never totally devoid of hope. Despite the majority of the album being instrumental, we are treated to songs like Hand in handand Remember, both of which are infectiously charming vocally led tracks that ascend at just the right moments. The album boasts some wonderful contributions from the likes of Big Delta Black, Jasmin Kaset, Thomas Barrandon and The Protomen.

Those quick enough off the mark, may have been lucky enough to bag themselves one of the super cool Wilderness double LP Vinyl’s, which are housed in a gatefold sleeve and limited to only 250 copies worldwide. The artwork has been lovingly designed by previous collaborator and gifted artist, Caspar Newbolt. The finished product is simply stunning and vinyl this sexy is guaranteed to stir an erection or two amongst some of the more overly obsessive collectors out there. But fear not, a digital version of the album is also available to purchase and I hear a second run of vinyl is also on its way. To all those who purchase the album, a free digital download of ‘Eidolon: A short Film by Joey Ciccoline’ is also available. This visual bonus coincides with the release of the album and I strongly urge you to check this out too.

Making an album of this magnitude is never going to be an easy feet and I can only imagine how much Pusti laboured over this one. Not only does it feel deeply personal, but it really does reflect a certain realness and honesty. It twists and winds through the chasms of the mind and it bares deep seated feelings and emotions, almost like a form of self therapy. Wilderness is many things, it’s humble, proud, claustrophobic and free and it succeeds where so many others have fallen short before it. This is Makeup and Vanity set’ most accomplished and beautiful work to date, its quite simply brilliant!

I’m fortunate enough that the vast majority of new releases that get to my ears for reviewing purposes are typically good, or at the very worst have redeemable or interesting qualities. The real treat is when I find myself reviewing an album or EP that manages to surprise me and intrigue me in a genre that can sometimes be weighed down with sidechained-moog-derivatives. Plug & Play, the swan song of Pittsburgh, PA’s Betamaxx, is the latest album to blow me away with its sometimes dreamy, often emotional, and consistently cool sounds.

The album opens up with “Take Off”, a competent track that is very quickly overshadowed and forgotten in the wake of the much stronger songs that follow. “Integrated Circuitry” gives you a good idea of the unexpected nature of the songs on Plug & Play. The synths alternate between melding together in a lush texture and standing out as distinct melodies in a way that isn’t jarring. It just works. The second half of the track pushes the song into a melancholic and danceable groove. The next track, “Dreamer”, featuring vocals by Rat Rios is very catchy and showcases her vocal range really well. The song particularly shines when she sings in her higher register; that’s when it works best with the music.

My favorite song on the album, “Life on the Grid”, is a collaboration with Arcade High. My initial listen of Plug & Play was without looking at the track listing. Upon seeing that track 6 featured Arcade High, a lot of the idiosyncrasies of the song made a lot more sense. This isn’t to say that Betamaxx isn’t more than capable of creating powerful tracks alone, but the melding of the distinct sounds of Arcade High with Betamaxx creates what I am comfortable calling my favorite track of 2015 so far.

The album continues to progress with strong and distinct tracks before coming upon an incredibly strong one-two punch before the closer. “Guided by Moonlight” and “Electric Cruise” are my second and third favorite tracks from the album. The former is a brooding and frantic-paced song with an explosive build and drop around the 2:10 mark. “Electric Cruise” slows things down with a smoother, funkier sound. The song is over four minutes long but never feels like it is anything past three minutes. Little melodies, the vocoder on the vocals, and little programmed beat garnishes here and there keep the track consistently fresh.

The ambivalent feeling of being both excited and optimistic, but also introspective and downcast permeate the tracks of this album. Several songs pull you in both directions simultaneously. Plug & Play is something happy and sad at the same time. It is unfortunate that this is the last Betamaxx release, but what an album it is! This is the note to end on.

To preface this article, it would be fitting to say that I, the author, have been an avid player of tabletop RPGs (chiefly Dungeons & Dragons) since the seventh grade. This article will share both facts and opinions – I hope you, the reader, will forgive me for my bias. This game is close to my heart.

While originally conceived in 1974 and wildly popular before the 1980’s, Dungeons & Dragons (also known by the abbreviated “D&D”) certainly hit its heyday during the 1980’s. Available in two rules-sets, both “basic” and “advanced” (AD&D), the game focused on storytelling and action. For those only passing familiar with tabletop RPGs, they aren’t normally “competitive” in nature; the goal is to entertain through a mutual kind of story telling, where one participant (the Dungeon Master, or DM) creates the fantasy world around the players, whose characters (player characters, or PCs) interact with that fantasy world and ultimately play a large role in its progression.

“This booklet, and the box it came in, is near and dear to many a nerd’s heart.”

During the late 70s and most of the 80s, the game came under fire by fearful fundamentalist groups and other organizations for some of its elements. Not only were there demons and devils in the game’s handbooks, but early editions were none too shy about their illustrations, often depicting bare breasts, etc. This had “decency” advocates in an uproar – after all, this was a game for kids, wasn’t it?

“Ooh la la! Too bad you’re evil though!”

D&D was also often cited in court cases, blamed for inspiring murderous and Satanic mindsets among its devotees. The story of James Dallas Egbert is one widely publicized example of D&D being blamed for someone’s mental unraveling; other cases abound wherein the defendant has been known as an avid RPG player. The game was widely condemned for its treatment of demons, occultism, and violence; however, the accusers often blew things out of proportion. A good example of this propaganda is the Jack Chick tract “Dark Dungeons,” in which a girl falls into evil witchcraft via D&D and is saved by her pastor from eternal damnation. To draw upon personal experience, I have played D&D in one form or another for more than 20 years now, and I have never once witnessed any of my players (I usually am the Dungeon Master) behaving this way. One detail the critics fail to note is that for the most part, demons and their servants are depicted as the VILLAINS in D&D, not the heroes. TSR capitulated somewhat, however, by renaming their in-game demons and devils “Tanar’ri” and “Baatezu,” respectively, and distancing the game’s cosmology from real-life Western religion just enough to leave things ambiguous.

“Excerpt from the Chick tract.”

Outside of the controversy, D&D remained wildly popular, spawning a cartoon series, coloring books, action figures, and various other tie-ins. There was even a DC Comics series titled “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,” though it wasn’t very good.

In 1989, the “basic” edition took a backseat, and AD&D released its 2nd edition revised rules… the ones I grew up on. Now, if you’re wondering what was so “advanced” about it, AD&D was, to be frank, a bit more complex. Charts and lists abounded, and it wasn’t uncommon to pause gameplay to look up a rule or reference one of the ubiquitous charts and graphs.

“Charts, charts, charts…”

Despite this, the game remained popular, and early editions are still used and played by a diehard set of purists. Attempts have been made by third parties to reproduce the same “feel” of the old editions with new (but old-school) rules sets, with mixed results. Two of my personal favorites are OSRIC and ACKS, but many exist, some free, some you have to pay for.

The game, regardless of its edition or rules set, is a mix of acting, dice-rolling (to resolve actions in combat and sometimes elsewhere), and if your DM is good at what they’re doing, problem-solving. I’ve seen games based around courtly intrigue, hack-and-slash monster battles, and even murder-mystery-themed campaigns. Players are offered a wide range of options for building and advancing their characters; you can play an elf, a wizard, a servant of a deity, a mighty warrior, and plenty of archetypes in between.

In the 1980s, D&D was considered largely the purview of “nerds” and “geeks,” and while that stigma has softened nowadays, it is still (sometimes facetiously) trumpeted far and wide. That’s just fine with most of us; we have a great time playing it. However, I recommend it to any group of people who have a “game night” and want to try something a little more exciting than Boggle or Monopoly. Not that there’s anything wrong with those games! If the idea of complex rules and millions of charts puts you off, I recommend the most recent edition, 5th. It is fairly simple to pick up, and there is a “starter set” available.

I’d like to thank NRW for indulging me, and letting me write a bit about my passion – I mean, my hobby… yeah, my hobby… on their website.
