Album Review : ‘THE PEARL’ by Sensational & Planteaterz

Sensational feat. Planteaterz – “THE PEARL” EP

Sensational is the weird kids’ favorite rapper. He is the most unknown, sort of well-known, but not really, abstract experimental vagabond you’ve never heard of. He’s written numerous albums, E.P.’s and features that can be found all over bandcamp.

With “The Pearl”, Sensational delivers his signature brand of stream of thought wordplay and his gruff-gravely delivery layered over Planteaterz’ otherworldly productions. This is more free-verse than what you’d typically expect from an underground Hip-Hop album. Experimental landscapes and textures layered very well with Chuck O’Bliss’ rhyme patterns. Some of these tracks including the few remixes is mystic circuitry; easily going from garage band Dan the Automator into lush and beautiful weirdness.

He is known more for his often eclectic collaboration work, having played with the likes of Cardopusher, Kid 606, Handsome Boy Modeling School, DJ Scotch Bonnet, Kouhei Matsunaga, and Spectre. Often quite prolific, but known for brief spells of homelessness, it is not known how much of Sensational’s discography there actually is, as he can often be found selling his music on the streets of New York.”

Cruise down Division Streets’ ‘Districts’

Another drudging workday has reached its end. Time to make the most of the cold nighttime air before the exhaustion truly kicks in. Then it’s back to square one. The great CN Tower reigns over the scintillating city skyline like a watchtower. A city cab finally takes pity on you and lets you drop into its backseat. In your heavy state of exhaustion weighing down on your every move, your fumbling hands get a hold of your phone and manage to dial some music to keep your senses alive.

The music slowly pours in and slowly submerging the lonely backseat with wave upon wave of sonic serenity, washing all worries away with each subsequent cut of pure ambient outrun bliss. Rows streetlights swell and blossom into a bokkeh garden and passing cars trace hazy headlight trails across rear view mirror as they drift into the night. All worries evaporate into the atmosphere as you sink deeper into the world of Division Street’s Districts.

Waveshaper releases new single ‘Terrabot’

Following up on last month’s single drop for ‘Gigabot’, Swedish Synthwave legend Waveshaper is offering a second appetizing listen to an extremely promising forthcoming album. Featuring art by Artem Solop, ‘Terrabot’ and opens on a nasty bass groove that strides along the border between Synthwave and Darksynth, gradually building up momentum and tension before dropping its melodic payoff at the tail-end of the track. There may be a few producers who keep produce and retrowave music on such a consistent basis, but there are a great deal fewer that can claim to do it as well as Sweden’s Waveshaper.

Kavinsky releases 2nd single ‘Zenith’

As promised, Synthwave mascot Kavinsky has unveiled the second single to his upcoming album Reborn.

Featuring Prudence (the Dø) and Morgan Phalen (Diamond Nights) on vocals, ‘Zenith’ has been announced as a sequel to the Outrun mega-hit ‘Nightcall’. The track adopts a more contemplate vibe than ‘Renegade‘, with sexy sax licks and wailing synth leads that will take you back to the days of leopard spandex and curly-haired hard-rock ballads.

Kavinsky ‘Reborn’ is out on March 25th via Astralwerks/Record Makers and is available for pre-order.

Maxthor drops new single ‘Far Away’

Spanish Synthwave group Maxthor has spared no time in inaugurating the new year. Following up on a series of remarkable singles dropped in 2021, the trio is now back with a dreamy, star-studded night cruising jam titled ‘Far Away’. If these past few tracks are anything to go by, it looks like Maxthor are getting ready to drop a monster of a record this year. We’ll be keeping an ear and eye out for the stars.
