I don’t think that anyone believes that The Weeknd invented Synthwave. Anyone whose attention is caught by the term ‘Synthwave’ will immediately find out that the scene widely pre-dates Blinding Lights.
Synthwave or not, The Weeknd is earning crazy amounts of money with every release he puts out. I think it’s preposterous to think that his success means that he is taking away money from other artists in the scene. If anything, The Weeknd could very well be helping the scene gain exposure, which in turn might make it grow and help all of the other artists.

It’s also sad that he will earn great wealth using the synthwave genre, but all of the amazing (and generally more talented) originators and innovators will make almost no money with their music. Sadly, that’s the way it always is.

FM Attack and Kristine, should be selling 250K copies of their albums and getting booked to do at least one date in every major city.

Hosono was the glue that held the classical keyboards of Sakamoto and the pop sensibilities of Takahashi together to form the YMO trio. It is widely accepted that the YMO sound was primarily Hosono’s. Yellow Magic Orchestra disbanded in 1983 shortly after the release of the album “Naughty Boys”. The 1984 live recording “After Service” is still the best introduction to the bands back catalog. Although they later reformed and put out a few new recordings, to experience the band at their zenith you have to check out After Service, Naughty Boys, Technodelic and BGM. Buying the CD for After Service in my senior year in high school proved to be a seminal moment for my electronic musical journey. I highly recommend Hosono’s solo work and all YMO stuff. Also, Yukihiro Takahashi’s “Neuromantic” (featuring Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay) is an electronic masterpiece almost beyond compare.
