I don't think that anyone believes that The Weeknd invented Synthwave. Anyone whose attention is caught by the term 'Synthwave' will immediately find out that the scene widely pre-dates Blinding Lights.
Synthwave or not, The Weeknd is earning crazy amounts of money with every release he puts out. I think it's preposterous to think that his success means that he is taking away money from other artists in the scene. If anything, The Weeknd could very well be helping the scene gain exposure, which in turn might make it grow and help all of the other artists.

While I like Blinding Lights, all the young people are going to be claiming that The Weeknd invented retrowave/synthwave.

It's also sad that he will earn great wealth using the synthwave genre, but all of the amazing (and generally more talented) originators and innovators will make almost no money with their music. Sadly, that's the way it always is.

FM Attack and Kristine, should be selling 250K copies of their albums and getting booked to do at least one date in every major city.
